A cousin of mine is an electrical engineer and hadn't seen BBT until I introduced it to him in about the 3rd season. He was hooked immediately. He went to an engineering college and said he could name 4-5 guys he went to school with for each of the characters...he said the personality traits are spot on!!

Only shitty part is that the "nerdy hobbies" they have are very much without depth. Its VERY visible in the videogame related episodes. Its made about this stuff, but its clearly made by and for people outside of those interests. Still a good show, though!

Still, I like that most of the nerdy references are to actual games, comic books, and shows, rather than making up non-existant names. In a much later episode, Sheldon tries to persuade the gang to play a board game called "Campaign for North Africa." A friend of mine (also a big TBBT fan) was one of the designers of that game when he worked for SPI in the '70s. He went wild when he saw his game being played on TV.

Yeah, I've seen an interview or something like that where the actress that plays Amy(she's a real life scientist and even taught science) was saying that the characters are pretty spot on and a lot of her colleagues in real life are actually like that.

As an autistic person, I often have to use Sheldon as a example when explaining to others what that means for me socially. Sheldon not being able to understand sarcasm is a BIG tell that he might be on the spectrum. Liking patterns and routines. Also very normal for a aspy. Taking things way too seriously. The tells are all there so whenever I need to example autism in a way people can understand and are likely to realize to, I say Sheldon. That's how big of a cultural impact BBT was. It helped people have me have a great representation that others understood and loved. Even if he was never fully confirmed as one. He certainly is coded

Sheldon has a different approach to things because he has autism spectrum disorder. I relate, so I can see the humor. This is a recurring aspect of his interactions and is played out in both his professional life and recreational pursuits. It's part of the complex dynamics of their group that makes it so charming. They are all such good friends, so supportive of each other (most of the time).

100% agree. So many of Sheldon's traits have become jokes between my sister and me bc I'm "sheldon-ing again" and his character was the push we needed to really educate ourselves about the things I say or do and I finally got my diagnosis bc of it

It was never confirmed on the series that he is autistic so idk why people feel the need to armchair diagnose him. Don’t you think they would’ve said as much in the show if they wanted the viewers to see him that way? Can’t you just see him as a little eccentric?

One of the things I like best about TBBT is that almost all of the geeky references -- comic books, movies, games, TV, a lot of the science -- are real things. "The Monkey and the Princess," though, I'm pretty sure isn't one of them.

@@NoudlePipW Whole terminology is absolutely messed up anyway because of the current wave of self-diagnosis and false diagnosis. Everyone pretends they're this or that at the slightest sign. Sheldon show lots of sign of Asperger Syndrom, which is a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The real kind, not the internet kind. Very well acted in the show, obviously.

For two reasons. #1: What was being diagnosed as Asperger's was still on the autism spectrum, so the general consensus in the medical community was to stop using that and stick with autism spectrum and #2 is that the person Asperger's was named after was a bad person and was part of or helped the Nazi regime.

I think you are trying to analyze this too much. Just enjoy it. These are not normal acting characters. The characters on Friends are more in the norm. Sheldon is the main character.
