I have glolite tetras that have been replenishing their school for several years. I wasn't trying to breed them but ever summer my plants take over their tanks and a few babies appear. Great video.

Just throwing my method into the ring. It has worked really well for me so far. I planted out a 10 gallon tank with a carpet of Utricularia graminifolia. I used a fine gravel, with about an inch of peat mixed into the bottom. I did a dry start. Since there is peat in the substrate, the water will be have tannins without having to mess with blackwater extract. The U. graminifolia likes the same water that is perfect for tetra spawning/hatching. I use pure RO. This setup will automatically be soft and acidic. Plus, the plant eats infusoria, so feeding infusoria is good for the carpet as well as the fry. The traps are too small to eat fish, even newborn tetras. I leave the fry in there until they switch from the larvae stage to small juveniles, then I start the process all over. Mine is not a good method for mass production, but it is a good way for someone to expand out a school. Tetras LOVE scattering their eggs on Utricularia, and the fry love to hide/forage in it. Cheers

hey mate, im breeding tetras, mostly neons, but other types too. The thing with tds is that it measures electrical conductivity of water. So by lowering pH and adding tannins, you naturally increase conductivity. The molecules of calcium and magnesium which dictate the hardness are bound to each other and thats how you "lower" your hardness. Most tetras (including neons) will spawn in any water, as long as they feel safe. I have them breeding in my community tank with 480 TDS. The trick to hatching is ~20 TDS and pH of about 6.0. To induce spawning separate male and females for 2 weeks and feed them at least 3-4 times a day. It takes about 2 weeks for them to fill up with eggs and males to fill up with milt again. If you put them in a breeding setting (whether it's a box or your holding tank) together any time before 2 weeks, most of the eggs will turn infertile, and egg production will be very low. Idk if you remember me, but few months ago i asked you for advice on keeping fry alive in first 2 weeks, since mine were all dying off. Turns out my sleeping schedule was bad for them. From time i fed them last until i woke up and feed them again, most of them already starved, since they need to be fed every few hours. So if you run into any problems with fry, try tinkering with some kind of automatic feeder with powdered food. I am currently looking for ideas on how to make one.

Great vlog! As for the rise in tds: tds being total dissolved solids include both inorganic and organic solids. As such, the rise in tds could be the tannins released in the water rather than increased hardness, which is what neons dislike.

For breeding characins and any other egg scatteres you should rather prepare your water before, not in a breeding tank with fish. I usually pepare 200-300 litres of water in a plastic drum, keep adjusting ph and tds and aerate that water for at least 3 days. I use it only for breeding when this water becomes "stable".

Coco fiber has salt in it. Harcore gardeners like me, all know this. You've got to leach it out before using it. Unfortunately the companies that sell it don't always tell you this. Soak it over night in fresh water, drain it, then soak overnight again. This is why I don't use coco coir for much other than my worm bins.
