Maybe they are Scandinavian and asked for a change in the way the door opens? And yes, doors in Scandinavian tend to open outwards. Also, an option on American houses. Advantages include more inner space, security (doors opening outwards are harder to force through) and better protection against very windy climates. Disadvantages are snowfall blocking the door, ventilation (cannot install screen doors on outward opening doors) and... security (regular hinges may be popped open from the outside and credit card tricks are more likely to work from the outside).
