Beatles: GOAT. So far ahead of the game as to redefine the game altogether. Their conceptual albums and their wild eclecticism, World Music stances, socially conscious reimaging of the world has influenced peers and next-generation greats, ranging from Marvin Gaye (What's Goin' On), Stevie Wonder (Inner Visions/Songs in the Key of Life), to Prince, especially Prince, (1999, Around the World in A Day, Sign O' The Times, etc.), Beyoncé (Lemonade), et al: "Yeah! Another good song to react to is Paul McCartney's first #1 hit after leaving The Beatles. The song was 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey'. I remember putting a quarter (maybe a dime?) into a tableside jukebox and listening to this song when it was current and I was much younger. The album it came off of, 'Ram', would go on to be #1 in the UK and #2 in the US, selling over 2 million copies.

Paul's first Number 1 was, "Another Day," a song worked on with the Beatles but not fully developed, due to their break-up. "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," an album track from his second solo album, "Ram," was not released as a single in the UK.
@selkirk573 жыл бұрын
@@andyallan2909Sorry, should have mentioned it was #1 in US. From the Wiki - ""Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is a song by Paul and Linda McCartney from the album Ram. Released in the United States as a single on 2 August 1971, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 4 September 1971, making it the first of a string of post-Beatles, Paul McCartney-penned singles to top the US pop chart during the 1970s and 1980s. Billboard ranked the song as number 22 on its Top Pop Singles of 1971 year-end chart. It became McCartney's first gold record after the break up of the Beatles."

Paul and George often sang the chorus lines together, and even though they had excellent harmonies George's voice also stood out quite clearly. The Beatles were very well practiced with public performances for a long time before they became famous. Many of their early songs were played in live performances before they went to the recording studio. They never really appeared to be arrogant. Just dedicated and very hard working. Before they broke up they were on the edge of burnout for about two years.

Great song! Harri, I think the biggest reason few (there were some like, "Yes It Is", and, "This Boy") Beatles songs sounded alike was because there were multiple songwriters in the band--sometimes collaborating with other members, and sometimes presenting finished (or nearly finished) songs to the band for approval Obviously George didn't contribute as much songwriting as John and Paul--but when he did, his sound was distinct. Ringo wrote a couple, but given the massive size of their catalog, his songwriting contribution was not statistically significant (nor was it very good, but that's beside the point).

This is a Paul McCartney song: "Hello, Goodbye’ was one of my songs. There are Geminian influences here I think: the twins. It’s such a deep theme in the universe, duality - man woman, black white, ebony ivory, high low, right wrong, up down, hello goodbye - that it was a very easy song to write. It’s just a song of duality, with me advocating the more positive. You say goodbye, I say hello. You say stop, I say go. I was advocating the more positive side of the duality, and I still do to this day". Paul McCartney The other side of the single was I Am The Walrus, a John Lennon composition.

ACTUALLY: George Harrison wrote quite a bit with Lennon and Macca but never got the writer's credit. Incredibly, he composed the hook to Eleanor Rigby, the defining motif of And I Love Her; he constructed "Happiness is A Warm Gun" as a unified whole out of two separate Lennon snippets: Harrison was and remains an essential Beatle, from his groundbreaking guitar playing, his woke-decades-ahead-of-the-game embrace of World Music (Indeed, he, along with the likes of Shankar, Marley, and Mclaughlin, is one of its founding creators), and his own incandescent songs (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun, Something, etc.) are so much part of the Beatles' canon, legend, and ...GREATNESS.

Hello, Goodbye is not from "Magical Mystery Tour," it was a stand-alone, single. Capitol records in the USA, were notorious for trying to make extra money out of the Beatles by carving up their record releases. They released the Magical Mystery Tour as an album in America by adding singles (A and B sides) to the UK double EP release (6 songs) to make a whole album. "Hello, Goodbye," which has nothing to do with Magical Mystery Tour, was one of the songs they added.

Sampling another artist's music should be illegal. I've always thought this song was irresistible; recently Paul said it's about duality, maybe in retrospect. John was miffed that 'I Am the Walrus' was reduced to the b-side, I agree, it was far more complex, clever and psychedelic.
@sourisvoleur48543 жыл бұрын
Totally agree about Walrus but it's not #1 material, and they released singles to make money.

Yes agree, I want to say G Martin and Paul wanted this song to be the A side and John was really upset, "I'm tired of being Paul's back up band" or words to that effect.
@markydh833 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it was, but it wasn’t as easily marketable and wasn’t radio-friendly, which is the point of singles. One thing Paul was far better at than John was understanding what was and wasn’t the best choice for a single. He also got pissed off that Hey Jude was the A Side and Revolution was the B Side, but that was also very much the right choice.
@stevemd64883 жыл бұрын
@@markydh83 Agree, at that time there job was to create radio hits and John was tired of that. But isn't it interesting after all this time I would dare say most fans would say Walrus and Revolution are far superior songs. I might be wrong.
@markydh833 жыл бұрын
@@stevemd6488 I’m a fan and I definitely wouldn’t agree. I Am a Walrus is just John being a pretentious prat and throwing nonsense lyrics that sound clever together and people lap it up. It has no more lyrical merit than Why Don’t We Do it in the Road. In fact the latter does actually have a meaning. The former was just John trying to get one over people who spend their lives interpreting his songs. Hey Jude is one of the most popular songs ever written. Revolution is probably only known by Beatles fans. And I’d argue that the message within Hey Jude is one of Paul’s best from a lyrical point of view. Even John agreed with that.

The video, actually a film, of Hello Goodbye, they did for this on a stage in a theater, in their Sergeant Pepper outfits etc, should have been included in the Magical Mystery Tour Film....it would have improved the film immensely, and cutting out some garbage stuff that just didn't work...it did not help that the BBC showed it on Boxing Day in Black and White...a color film in Black and White? How dumb is that? Totally loses it's visual effect. I saw a fantastic clean 35 millimeter copy of Magical Mystery Tour on the big screen in the theater once.
