I live in east Texas , we own 13 acres way out in the woods . I cannot think of a scenario where I would bug out or flee my property . my survival kit includes everything in my home and barn . if I was told I had to create a survival kit to carry with me , it would weigh about 75 pounds , plus whatever 2 cases of beer weighs !

One of my most important pieces of gear is a pair of Trademaster gloves by Firm Grip. One slip of a knife or a wrong snap of a branch could turn what might be a minor injury around the house into a life threatening situation in the bush.

You have raised a really important issue, thanks. Now, I'm quite an old guy and have been around a lot of things, and picked up some tips along the way. The term "survival" is a veritable minefield of misunderstandings waiting to happen. The biggest problem is time - when one talks about surviving "out there", what does that mean ? Well it's like a long timeline - it goes from surviving for a couple of days to indefinitely. Also it runs parallel to another similar line - location and weather! Surviving in Alaska (as you know) is vastly different from surviving in Florida! Another issue is why you are there! In other words, are you deliberately going out into the wilderness with the intention of returning, and in what time frame? Or are you intending to go somewhere to put down roots indefinitely? [Note: these days it is highly unlikely that one will suddenly find oneself in such a "survival" situation, and have to make do with what you have with you! How did you get there? Why are you alone? Where is your vehicle? etc. These are mostly hypothetical scenarios dreamed up to make You Tube videos. ] Personally, I believe one should clarify these things so that viewers have a better understanding of the context within which the video is being made, so that one gets a better understanding. For example, I assume that your videos are set in Alaskan conditions. But to what extent do these conditions differ from summer to winter? See what I mean? Let's look at the show Alone. Even with very carefully controlled rules, the length of time contestants can stay "out" before being extracted is surprisingly short! Why is that? Invariably it has to do with being able to feed oneself sustainably. The frontiersmen of old could do it, you might say! Correct. However, they invariably had a much larger amount of gear and invariably horses/mules to help carry it. This is crucial. Also, they invariably had firearms for gathering/hunting food, which occupied a considerable amount of their time. Even in Roman times, a team of 8 legionaries, PLUS two support staff and two mules was the smallest military unit! This was called a contubernium, equivalent to a modern squad. This goes to show that to "survive" away from other people and "in the wild" requires more equipment/kit/gear the longer one has to be out there! This will obviously then impact what one decides to have with you at all times. The average person not specifically trained for it, can perhaps carry a pack of about 50 pounds (25 kgs). It's hard to conceive that this could be sustainable, depending on terrain etc, and whether one includes a firearm or not. Of course, a major factor is the relative skill level of the person in the use of whatever is in the gear. This is the force multiplier! It is here that I see the value of practical skills development in the use of outdoors gear (call it bushcrafting if you want to). But one needs to be careful that this skills development doesn't become the end in itself - this would then become a hobby, on the way to an obsession! Like endless videos on super-duper fine feathersticking, or batoning wood with ever smaller knives! To conclude, the whole subject is very complex and has a huge number of variables. I agree with you that a 5 pound survival kit just sounds ridiculous, unless one ringfences it with the context within which it might be used successfully. It could potentially get people killed, especially people not well enough versed in how to use what is in the kit. Cheers mate, I enjoyed this video of yours! PS. I still don't agree about the axe though! I'd leave it behind and take my Cold Steel Trail Master instead! ;-)

Get a rigid gun belt and a good set of suspenders to hang your gear on. Cargo pants also to keep the rest of your gear in. Don't create a situation where you can get separated from what is going to keep you alive for 24 hour's minimum in winter conditions.

To me survival means if things, for whatever reason, go really really wrong. Presumably you’ll have your other good stuff with you. My survival plan is to have stuff you’ll really need if the other stuff breaks or you lost or forgot to bring it. Doesn’t have to be your best stuff. Adequate for short term emergency use.

👍👍👍 .. some good points raised .. especially the 'being rescued beats having to hunker down for an extended period'. Ultralight Survival Kits? Naah .. in most cares, not worth the weight (lack of). Better than nothing? Perhaps. But, if it lulls one into a false sense of security and obviates the need for something of real use, then rather do without. Hatchet too small? My little Gransfors Bruks does everything that I expect of it .. and it's size (lack of) means that it'll more probably be taken with then not. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

Aye, I rather have a 10-25lb pack of equipments/tools I need for survival than a flimsy 5lb little pack. Blades of any kind like knives, axes, and saws should be in said pack if not need for the moment. Cookware like pots and cast iron pans. A dependable sharpening stones, and lubricants. Multiple ways for fire making that isn’t friction like lighters, Ferro rods, matches and emergency tinder if it starts to either rain, snow, or sleet. A good tent or something similar and blankets either survival reflective type or wool. Sleeping bag that rated for below zero or near zero. And finally some way to make water safer to drink so filters and tablets .

Actual survival, is heavy duty business. There is NOTHING light weight about surviving some situations. The gear and the knowledge BETTER be tougher than the situation, or , chances are someone gonna die. Weight is NOT a primary consideration! Quality IS. The body WILL adapt to the weight... It is designed to. (With proper maintenance of course). It IS true that pounds equal pain... No doubts about it... The body will adapt to the challenges.

The biggest lie in the survivalist craze is people selling top $$$$ gear as assured survival items. There's too much selling of have-or-die gear and not enough about skills or physical training. The ultra light kits are for those who can't afford or even need a Gansfors or Silky or other over-priced, over-hyped gear that would be wasted on a survival cosplay trip to a vacant lot next door or grandpa's farm.

@StevanOutdoor
@StevanOutdoor Жыл бұрын
The volume and content of a 'survival kit' depends heavily on your skill set and circumstances. In general having something to assist you beats having nothing. For instance it's better to have a decent compass but having a button compass is better than no compass. For sure having some stuff with you in the outdoors beats having all this fantastic gear lying at home. So having a to big, bulky and heavy 'survival kit' might prevent you from actually carrying it in the outdoors. So for me an ax/hatchet and a saw are not a survival kit but a luxury kit. Survival is also relative. Most people getting lost want to be found and most fugutives don't want to be found. The problem with these 'personal location beacons' is that everybody can buy and use them with a cost to society (S&R coming to the rescue). I don't agree with the 5 C's or 10 C's of survival at least not with all of them. This 'guideline' is not much better than these lightweight 'survival kits'. In general people getting in trouble (aka survival situation) in the outdoors are day hikers. Not these 'bushcrafters' or 'thru hikers' who bring everything but the kitchen sink. So with this ready made lightweight 'survival kits' it's not different than with these lighweight ready made 'first aid kits'.
