The thing is that they really don’t need to reboot anything. They could have a series where every week they feature different characters and different ships or star bases. Set it in different eras, post Archer and pre Kirk. Post Next Generation or Deep Space Nine. There are so many ships and characters in the Star Trek universe and room to create original content in an established universe. If you want to write Star Trek stories use new characters and quit trying to reboot original characters.

They could do a kind of "Outer Limits" in the Star Wars universe, with new characters every week, maybe even in different eras. I think man people who love (old) Star Trek would love that. Problem is, New Star Trek is no longer made for people who like the old stuff.

The word I've see about references to older episodes in Discovery is "Member Berries". They are not subtle enough to be Easter Eggs, and seem to be more directly raising a reference as if to ask "members" of the old fans "do you remember this". 'Member this, 'member that? They don't seem to build the universe, nor utilize callbacks to explore concepts or aspects. A lot of the more recent "member berries" in Season 5 have the spoken implication of building up to a hidden message from an ancient civilization known as the Progenitors. Literally a copy and paste from TNG's Season 6 Episode 20 "The Chase". As one of the characters indicated that some part of it was a "red herring", I would assume the show is wearing the whole pointless "member berries" thing on its sleeve. Onto the primary topic, a First Contact reboot. That worked well for Star Trek: Enterprise didn't it? A pre-Enterprise NX-01 era Starfleet is going to have even less to work with. With J.J. Abrams involved I might expect that to be the opening epilogue, and to have the movie set during the Romulan War, as some kind of action movie. I'd hope it wouldn't be a reboot of the TNG portion of the script, as how different would that be from Abrams' 2009 installment? I suppose a reboot of the TNG script for First Contact, which would also be a reboot of the 2009 film, could serve as burial and memorial service for the "Kelvin Timeline". Would the era of first contact with the Vulcans and Cochrane's first warp flight even qualify as "Star Trek"? We've already had the International Space Station (I.S.S.), a joint space operation between the US and Russia. China is working on building a base on the dark side of the moon. We've got Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos building rocket ships. Is there any reason to use the Star Trek universe or "brand" for whatever story is being told? Would the story depend on space elf wizards magically fixing all of our problems?

Well, they re-did 'Wrath Of Khan" THREE TIMES for the NuTrek movies - and I say this as someone who genuinely LIKES NuTreks 1 and 3. So maybe someone thought it was about time to start replicating something else?

It's the definition of woke, it's not about that. It's about Paramount admitting that they should go back to following canon more, respecting the old show bibles and doing stories that trek fans actually care about, not trying to create something new and just slapping a label on it. I'm convinced that a lot of the aesthetic changes are to do with not having to pay old artists and designers a fee for previous work to keep costs down and control IP.

Star Trek First Contact already rebooted Zeprhan Cochrane. No TNG movie worths to be watched in my opinion, but current Star Trek is so much worse. Except Terry Matalas; this guy understands and loves the franchise.

WTF ! Oh No please don't trash Trek Cannon again , we've had enough between all the ret-con's over the many companies ,DC ,Marvel, 😂Dr Who. If they do, can they make it a bit darker and no DEI as the OG TNG was a bit Star Trek light at first. We want the Diplomacy of Picard and the we come in peace shoot to kill Kirk spirit . When they first made Contact I was cool but Meh, but still better than any Trek up until Picard the series other than ENTERPRIZE even if it had the worst theme song ever and a rushed disappointing finale . As a 50 Year Trek fan in it's many forms though I hated Voyager I watched it, Discovery I tried but 🤮.So Please don't Screw this one up 🙏🏻.

I didn't watch "First Contact", because i didn't liked the story. In a postapocalyptic world, a drunken genius - or a brilliant alcoholic - builds a spaceship out of an old missile without the help of a big team of scientists and mechanics. Yeah, thats just what you would expect to happen. At exact this time the Borg (again!) decide to time travel to conquer the earth. What a coincidence! And again it's the Enterprise interfering. So most of the movie is about slaying Borgs, before in the last scene the "first (official) contact" can be made. I know well that it was one of the most successful Star Trek movies, possibly because of the action. But is there any reason to do a story like this again, if not the lack of creativity?

Man, at this point I don't even care if they're creative. I just want them to earnestly do a good job. Simple story structures and premises tend to be the most solid, so I don't necessarily mind that they get repeated. But it's all the more reason to do a good job because when they suck there's no redeeming qualities to them since it's all been done before.

You say you didn't watch it and then you go and tell most of the basic story, a little confusing, if you didn't watch it how do you know the plot? and if you were interested enough to get familiar with the plot why haven't you just watched it? about the movie itself, any movie, especially sci-fi, can be summed up like this in the way you did in order to sound silly(although you are wrong in some things, like the borg time traveling to that date coincidently), a movie being good or bad isn't determined just on the basic story, First Contact was successful because it did a lot of things good, not just the action, both Nemesis and Insurrection had more action and they were failures.
