IIRC the current total fatality rate of the human condition is somewhere between 90 and 95%; meaning we can't even say with certainty p < 0.05 that all humans will die. In most sciences, that would mean the data just does not support the hypothesis...

The inevitability of death does not fall within the realms of the problem of induction, as death's inevitability is not a inductive inference but a deductive inference. All living organisms have a finite lifespan. Death is an inherent part of the life cycle, as cells have limits to how much wear and tear they can take. Polymers can only divide so many times; that's what causes aging. The human body is no exception to this. Physical decay over time, ie aging, is well-documented and observable, and has no exceptions. It can be deduced that this process that makes us more vulnerable will continue to happen to us in the future, as the burden of proof is on proving that this function will cease to occur, not continue to. Throughout history, every living organism has experienced death at some point or will do so later; this is not an inductive conclusion, but one that can be deduced from the miriad evidence already existing.
@spawel1
@spawel1 6 ай бұрын
um actually not every living organism is certain to die as not all living organisms suffer from ageing so really it is certainly possible that an organism can live an infinite life if the preconditions befit it. Also you make the assumption that ageing will continue to occur... already scientists are working to cure ageing perchance we may see an end to ageing in our lifetimes.. thus you are wrong.

Knowing I'm going to die is a comfort. Even if we somehow all become immortal and I won't lose loved ones, life would stagnate. Since the first people living to be multiple hundreds of years can be born in this century, and who will thus live to experience even greater advancements longevity if they should be made, the trouble with presuming you will die is that we can't be reasonably certain of it anymore. Immortality has always been portrayed as inherently inhuman, because nobody in any position of power--from government to lowly parent--has been able to tell their subjects that they can certainly live even for a hundred years. But soon enough this perception will grind down and immortality will no longer be (almost) ubiquitously portrayed as a curse or supernatural phenomenon we cannot handle.
