The CGI mustache adds depth I didn't know could exist. The Mariana's Trench of generic entertainment, if you will. Wait. It's not CGI? It moves as if it is. I'm legitimately impressed.

I was expecting him to paraphrase Descartes with the famous candle bit too and instead he went on a totally different tangeant, pretty amazed at how subverted my expectations were.

I want to think that I'm Type I, but I ain't that deep. I want things in my fantasy world to make sense, for fear that some hypothetical reader would point out inconsistencies that I may have overlooked. I feel like it stifles some creativity that I can't just make stuff up on a whim. For example, I want to introduce (anime-fied) harpies in my world. Where did they come from? How do they live and procreate? Are there male harpies? Why does my world think there are no males? What does a society of winged creatures look like? What clothes can they wear if they have wings and giant claws?

I love this one. I can already tell "There is not a single thought that you have had in your entire lives that I had not had by the age of ten." is going to be one of the lines that I just randomly think about every so often. It's... I know what it's meant to mean but I just keep imagining it as a claim that every single thought they've had ever, he had already had. Including things like "I really like pastrami but the local grocery store never has it in stock", "Oh wow it's 2024 already?", "I feel like I've never seen a movie like that before, the way it forces you to adopt a new perspective", and "Did I really just get spoiled on It Has Been Said by the actual fucking book?"

Saying we are insignificant next to the cosmos has always been a lazy form of nihilism. As Chesterton says, “Why should a man surrender his dignity to the solar system any more than to a whale? If mere size proves that man is not the image of God, then a whale may be the image of God; a somewhat formless image; what one might call an impressionist portrait. It is quite futile to argue that man is small compared to the cosmos; for man was always small compared to the nearest tree.”
@Billionth_Kevin13 сағат бұрын
While I personally don’t disagree and prefer the post-nihilism viewpoint of “nothing matters” doesn’t matter, to play devil’s advocate to Chesterton and be the voice of the small man, I guess small man’s advocate would be more succinct, the small man can chop down the tree, kill the whale, climb the mountain, circumnavigate the globe, plunge the deepest depths of the oceans, even step foot on the moon, but not even an infinite lifetimes can the small man cross the universe. The small man is made to feel big by conquering, and he cannot conquer the universe, it is too vast. What makes the small man truly small however is not the limitations of his deeds, but the limitations of his insistence that deeds make the man. Understanding makes the person, he can learn about the tree, the whale, the universe. People are of the universe and its way of seeing itself, we are how the universe can self reflect and understand its own beauty. We can plant the tree, save the whale, discover the origin and age of the universe and its vast complexity. We are infinite, so f that little shit of a small man.

Mr Mustache Sunglasses, I have a question for you: How do you know you're real? You could just be a construct created by another being. You're whole purpose might just be "Nilhistic Asshole who refuses to improve themselves or find hope", either by accident or as part of a lesson for someone, somewhere. Like imagine if you were Generic Entertainment for someone. You're not based, you're not based on anything. *Drops the microphone*

Just finished the Netflix version. Never read the books and won’t bother tbh. The Netflix characters were universally unlikable for most the show. 2 characters took 6 episodes to be remotely relevant (probably an artifact of the series adaptation that the writers should have accounted for). And they needed a better science advisor if they wanted to avoid gaffs like calling the brain capsule the fastest ship ever when the Parker Solar Probe from 2018 beat it by more than twice the speed (though perhaps the episode was shot before 2023). It did have some entertaining moments at least and the fact that I finished the series with my ADHD is a compliment to the story (excuse it by reminding the audience this is an alternate universe to ours)?. The acting was overall excellent. And finally, can we talk about the elephant in the room: the fact that CCH Pounder hasn’t aged a day since I saw her in Lifepod? Not. A. Day. 😅
