What Adam Smith meant by free markets was basically "markets free from rentiers". People take this to mean "free from taxes", but leave out other forms of rent like land rent and interest. This is because unlike the classical view of economics, neoclassical economics made the landlord and the banker up to be "service providers" who are productive. Since they perform land and money allocation services (what we now call the "FIRE sector"), land rent and interest are then considered not a deduction upon net national income but as the part of it (corresponding the output of the FIRE sector), as if they were the same as profits and wages. It's no wonder then, that while the majority of americans can't pay rent and are buried in debt, the economy is supposedly growing! Michael Hudson goes in great lenght about this

I've heard a few people from my high school days are Antifa associates and the funny thing is if I were to describe them, as they were back then, they were all pretty much nerdy misfits with a slightly aggressive streak. It's like they despised the social hierarchy that occurs naturally in any high school, however, I suspect they only despised it because they were not right up there at its peak. Because they were not atop the popularity stakes, they hated that fact, and therefore hated the more popular kids for no real reason other than their popularity..... but of course, would never say anything to them. I would not be at all surprised if the ranks of Antifa were filled with people just like this from high schools everywhere.
