I wonder if they thought there was not a lot of real value until they started seeing the special items you and Tony were finding. Letting you do the dirty work, so to speak. It's unfortunate and I get that they are dealing with the loss of a loved one's items but don't store them in a barn that is accessible to critters. It's a bit odd to suddenly want a photo album that was literally laying on the floor of a barn with the dirt and years of who knows what.

It is a very unattractive part of (human) nature that we often do not see value in something until someone else wants it. Picture two children fighting for possession of a toy, the first child often immediately losing interest when the other lets go.

That’s just so rude of them, they just wanted you all to do the work and they can pick what they want after you do the work. Sorry they just wasted your time. The problem with these type of people is they don’t want to go through the stuff, but want someone else to do the grunt work, the pick what they want to keep. Hope you got some money back. Sad thing is the stuff they took out of your pile will probably end up in a dumpster.

My sister did this at our parents' estate sale. She wanted it because someone else did. A few months later ,she was on Facebook trying to get rid of all the stuff she hoarded at the estate sale. The stuff meant nothing to her, she's just greedy. I don't have to tell you that some people are weirdos, including my sister. Ten years later, she's still got the stuff rotting in her garage.

Well that stinks! I had something happened to me at a church rummage sale. I found a painting that I wanted to purchase and when I was purchasing it, I asked my friend to read the name on the paining. She read the name on the paining out loud to me and one of the people working the church rummage sale said oh that’s not for sale. I said what do you mean I’m paying for it it’s been here for two days. She said that was a mistake. It should’ve been in the sale. I took it up with the pastor and the pastor said oh it’s not for sale. I found out later that the artist is a well-known artist. Never thought I would experience anything shady at a church rummage sale. 😮

A well known local artist painting really may not be all that valuable . I'm an artist and know a lot of the well known artists in my area. Their paintings are priced high at galleries but can be for sale for years and never sell. Now if It was an original Andrew Wyeth painting.....you lost out.

@@paulah317 I’ve been flipping art for several years, mostly equestrian related because I live in the heart of hunt country of Virginia. This particular painting was of a bird. After I left the church, I looked it up and found similar works by the artist selling for 6,000 at auction. Anyways, it would of been a nice flip for $80.

As I have learned over the years, the best course of action when discovering diamonds amongst the rough is to keep quiet, act nonchalant and make as little fuss as possible, play it cool. If the seller wants to get the best price possible for an item, then it is up to them to earn that value by putting the work in and doing some research before it hits the counter. Knowledge is everything when it comes to buying and selling. I’m not totally mercenary, there have been numerous times when I’ve mentioned to a seller that an item is way underpriced because of X,Y and Z reasons and they should look into it themselves. Entirely up to them if they wish to take that on board, they may have other reasons to want it sold cheap, who can say? It depends on how well you know the seller and who gains the most from the sale. In the case of the painting you found at the sale, did the church hang on to it because it is a valued and much loved artwork that due to some terrible misunderstanding ended up in the sale by accident… or did it sell to a higher bidder? Cynical, me?

Seems that this property has seen much better days. Storing books and artwork in the wild: no way ! 🤨 I had lots of negotiations with similar folks like those, and the final result was always the same: I quit and said: nope, thank you, I am done, you can keep everything , you won´t get a single buck from me. If some weirdos don´t have manners, don´t support them, so they have to learn the hard way how to behave properly. Just my two cents. The Wizard of Oz books would have been great, but not in that moldy condition. And: don´t care for this dirty photo album, you will get a much better one from Europe soon with tons of background history. 😉 Nonetheless, you made some interesting experiences and purchases, and that´s what counts. BTW: my absolute star of this show were your facial expressions reflecting your emotions on this incredible story. Priceless, I love it ! 👌Greets from GER, U.

I couldn't help it! My face was probably giving the same looks at the place because while we know this scenario happens, it was almost comical. My memory isn't what it used to be but remove a few books on me and I'll remember they aren't there! Well, it just adds to our stories and do we have plenty of them! I didn't want to jeopardize Tony & our other friend not getting their items, or the items we picked together to resell, so I figured that I'd probably be able to come across those books again at the flea market and just leave it be. Now if it was a Gutenberg that grew legs and walked away from my pile! I'll be stopping at the post office at the end of the week, so we shall see if any surprises await! (Though that might be too quick of a trip across the ocean!)

Sorry for the unfortunate experience. Sounds like the people wanted a "sorting company" rather than a pick or cleanout. Clearly they had no respect for you, Tony and your crew - and what you do - as evidenced by the language and reclaiming stuff after negotiating. Tony has the patience of Job, talking the people down from being all wound up. Focusing on positive, I did enjoy hearing Tony sing, "Betty Davis Eyes." Also think that Preppie Handbook will be worth hundreds soon - I think Member's Only jackets and 3 golf shirts which upturned collars are coming back :). I guess they took those two small Bibles, too? Really liked those. BTW my iPod Nano v4 died a few months ago and now I don't have anything to play music on. My phone won't hold the whole library and is too clunky anyway. Guess I will have to get over that. The renovated Mickey marionette will mark this as a good day - some day in the future. Hope you have a great Wednesday!

Thanks to you & a few others, I know at least one book to pick up if we go back! Never would have thought about The Preppy Handbook, though probably would have looked it up. Now to hope that it was spared from the mice! If my Ipod Nano ever bites the big one, ugh, I don't want to think about it! I've had mine for so long that it is a staple when I travel. I'd be lost without it! I don't know if it would hook up to my current laptop, as I've never tried that out. My luck somehow it would wipe all of my music away! Rainy day here but attended an in-person storage auction. No unit for me, but there's always the next one!

I help set estate sales. We are always having customers sign the contract and then start removing stuff from the sale after we leave for the night. I am onlyna grubt eorker, but I am always telling my boss to video each room as we set so she can see what may have been taken by the homeowner. Sadly, if the sale doesn't make the profits, they will tend to scream "lawsuit". It really is ridiculous that the homeowner (estate holder) seems to think that they own the stuff regardless, but once that contract is signed, they only own 50%.

More power to you Renee. You handled that with grace. I have witnessed similar behavior at estate sales & while trying to help family & friends clean out. Know what you or your family has prior to scheduling a clean out or an estate sale. Take the time to go through everything in case there are items that have sentimental value. I'm not sure how sentimental an item is when its laying in a dirty barn covered in rodent droppings, but what do I know. Most of those books look like a health hazard. Thank you for saving Mickey. I'm not a Disney fan, but he looked so sad.

The owners sold items, then removed several items from the piles without telling anyone or refunding monies. There is a name for that- it’s called THEFT. The time to decide to keep something is BEFORE money exchanges hands. The value of the items that were removed while important doesn’t really change the fact that they removed items after selling them.

In the garage was a dusty display piece made out of plastic (broken and cracked) with ten pieces of Blue Mountain Pottery figurines. Not extremely valuable but I collect them. The price after discount was $10. I told my husband, oh look BMP, I’m going to get this. The clerk in garage overheard me, watched me put it on hold table as we shopped on. Meanwhile he and his wife looked up the value of the pieces and said they cannot sell it for $10, they would need $40. I said that I would contact the owner of the estate company and let them know how you are conducting business. They were the owners! OMG I will never shop with them again. A few other viewers have commented that as well, about how we are doing the work of going through things. I've heard stories from other people that do cleanouts/buyouts and they have experienced that same thing too.

Hey Lady next time you come across that Preppy Handbook take it!! Also this reminds me of back in the day when I would make the kids organize/clean out their closet every few months. Alllll of a sudden "Noo..that's my favorite yellow Lego" " But, I'll be so sad, I found this broken rubber band in the parking lot after the carnival on May 6, 2011"

They only are interested in the stuff that you picked because they needed someone to "curate" the stuff for them. They figure that if YOU picked it it must be worth a fortune, and therefore they simply MUST keep it!! It has happened to me at many estate sales!
@PaperandMoose

I had something similar to your story happen at an estate sale a few years ago. Spent at least 2 hours digging around a dirty, dusty attic that had things just strewn everywhere - closets filled, furniture falling apart, trunks jam-packed with garbage and some nice things. I found an antique painting with some damage, but it had a nice look to it. Not a professional artist, but still would look good framed. When I went to check out with my other items that I found in the attic, I was asked where I found the painting. I said under a pile of stuff in the corner of the attic. "Oh we can't sell this to you. We'd have to charge a lot of money because this shouldn't have been in the attic. We have to do some research." I asked if they wanted me to put it back where I found it, but of course no... they went & put it in their "high end" section.

I completely agree with you about this. My parents had to move out of their home as it became unsafe. Over 30 years of stuff in that house they have been getting out slowly. My dad has health issues and another issue just got diagnosed so they have been busy with doctors appointments plus tests too. They made a deal with some people who wanted to buy it for the land to build their house on. Sunday was the last day they were supposed to get anything out. Instead of being worried about important things this whole time my mom had been too busy cleaning out a closet with old sheets and towels. So she called me yesterday morning all upset that she they lost so much stuff in the house one being her wedding pictures. If they are that important to you that's one of the first things that gets taken out. Luckily they were able to get in yesterday afternoon to get more which I hope she grabbed her pictures if not I don't want to hear about them again.

Aww Renee, you're such a sweet soul. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Dishonesty & deceptive behavior is difficult to deal with, but at least you could walk away. Rise above it all & keep doing what you love. Good things will always come your way 💖

That's ridiculous that you had to go through that, I feel for you. If anyone says anything about the family, take a hike, they had years to go through stuff and didn't then obviously it really didn't mean anything to them.

Yeah, after about 5 minutes of that take-back, I would just say "good luck to you...buh-bye". Your time is money, too. Quote them a price for your time, and make sure it's a LOT of money...their tune will change, and quickly! Just say "NO", and move on...! Best of luck to you, Renee! I love watching you!

The minute we like an item, they assume it's valuable, as we are dealers they hate the idea of us making profit, I pick farms all the time and find treasures they never knew they had, then they say " I want to keep that " I say, " you didn't know you had it " nope, they keep it, despite the time I spent rooting through crap to find it, It happens very often, rather annoying to say the least, your'e a hero for remaining polite,

Woahh, the Nightmare Pick in the Outhouses of Hell. Purloined books, pickpocketed photo albums, effing and blinding galore; “ The grandkids need to see them and you can have them later…” what ????? Mental. Glad you retained the vintage Mickey though. Surprised they didn't reclaim that, looked desirable. Frustrating and maddening all in all though. Calm Renee, calm…. Laaa, De De, da daaaaa😠
