I stayed in Nazare in 1988 , just a beautiful earthy place , friendly people narrow cobble stone streets , the elder Women dressed in traditional garb , 7 layers of petty coats and the Men in Wool with stocking caps . you hear 'Fado' ( Portuguese Blues ) sung by the Women doing their chores . I'm sure it has changed , like everywhere .

Sure sounds dreamy back in 1988. Wish I'd been there. ❤

I was there last year. People were still friendly. Streets were still cobbled and narrow, but I didn’t ’t see any petty coats 😊😊. It’s was November, so only the big wave crowd was there.

It's true. Nararé was a fishing port where you could buy fish on auction sale. I am not sure is still the case, as I haven't been to Nazaré since many years. It was a nice and little village, as many in Portugal or anywhere. Unfortunatly, expats/turisms brings news buildings, new cultures and traditions get lost. All the coasts in France, Portugal, Spain, looks the same. Same turists shops with products "made in China", same restaurants, and even same people and same language (wicht for most, are not locals).

Public healthcare in Portugal is hours of wait for the locals as well as the foreigners. It's a long wait as it's over crowded (the locals will tell you this). If you go to Private healthcare facilities, it's much easier, they get you in right away and spend time with you. I would just pay for private healthcare access. It's so much nicer, better service and quicker. And high quality doctors as well. :)

What they said above is true. But if you have a serious health problem, you will end up in the Portuguese national health system because private hospitals will be unable to resolve it.
@gncl75993 ай бұрын
Sure, but all serious cases are handled by the Public Health System, private is great for small stuff. But depending where you live you might have a great public service, it really depends.

Portugal is a great country for a vacation. Nazareth is a beautiful small town. If somebody would move from New York, Chicago would not be happy. Quite boring after a while. Winter time inside is colder than outside. Make sure that try out at least a year before you move. Money is important that not everything. In small town people do not speak English. Bottom line is make sure that you can deal with all of the difficulties in Portugal. If you like it go for it.

Pointless comment. Imposing your narrow view of the world on others. I know several people from Chicago who have moved to Portugal and are quite happy. Boring? That's simply not true. You would have to be a very spoiled brat to find life boring in Portugal. You are right to make sure you can deal with the challenges of living in any new country. But so very wrong on everything else you've said. Sad really.

@grizfan932 ай бұрын
Yes, at least a 1-year lease. Fairly common for landlords to expect a 2 or 2 year lease, and even longer.
@grizfan932 ай бұрын
A few corrections to the healthcare. When you apply for your visa, you need travel insurance with repatriation. When you get a residency permit, you need to have private health insurance. Portugal has a private and public system. The public system is excellent for critical and chronic care, but overburdened, so less urgent needs can take a really long time. Once you have residency, you can sign up for and use the public system, though I would strongly urge people not to do that, for a variety of reasons. At a private hospital or clinic, you'll find it much easier to get an English-speaking doctor, you will have shorter waits, too. And, you won't compete for the limited resources of the public system. For costs, a lot depends on coverage. Not worth paying for vision or dental insurance, as rates for both are reasonable out of pocket. My wife and I (mid 50's) pay about $175 a month total for our private insurance. Doctor visits are about $20. Most tests are around $15-ish. For prescription meds, there is no private insurance. You either pay full retail, or once you have residency and get registered with the national health service, you pay those rates. Most meds have some cost to them, but a fraction of what I was paying in the US, even with very good health insurance. Depending on where you live, access to health services can actually be very easy, even if you don't speak Portuguese. Having easy access to private hospitals means you can access their English language websites and apps, find English speaking doctors, and book appointments. Living in a smaller town like Nazaré can be a challenge in this regard.

While weed and other drugs have been decriminalized here in Portugal, that doesn't exactly make them legal. If the police find you in possession of smaller amounts, you may wind up having to go to treatment. It is treated as a public health issue and not a criminal issue. But, it is illegal to sell drugs, including cannabis. Does that make it widespread? In my experience, definitely not. Compared to where I lived in the US, I rarely smell weed. It will vary significantly on where you are, too. Hanging out in Cais do Sodré on a Saturday night? Yeah, you'll see (and smell) plenty. Sitting out on your balcony pretty much anywhere? Very low odds.

Hello. Thank you taking the time to make these videos. Could you please add income Taxes to your list of questions? I know in Portugal they have removed the Non habitual tax break, which I actually agree with, and that really affects you income. Thanks man. Cool hat
@adventurefreaksss3 ай бұрын
Thank you for this information. I attempted to cover what incomes would be taxed in other videos but it's always complicated. Expats from the US have to file both in the US and their new country. Some countries have a dual taxation treaty with the US but you still have to file and one will off set the other. Expats share that they hire a tax expert that works with expats to file there taxes each year. So we don't cover it any longe because most expats leave it up to the experts to figure it out. In Portugal, they just changed the NHR, which only taxed your income by 10%. Now it is much higher and many are looking elsewhere. I hope this helps a bit!
