I found this roadside mausoleum abandoned and vandalised. They broke open coffins looking for diamonds and jewellery.

This mausoleum must have been lovely when it was built. I’m sure it was on their land at the time, and they didn’t want their dead too far away, but also not too close. It’s sad that people broke into it. I hope they are ashamed of stealing from the dead and that it bothers them for the rest of their lives unless they confess to the law.

Maybe a place they went Hunting there? - a Training Gallops on Marlborough Downs has graves on it belonging to the Racing Family- they wanted to be buried where the horses trained. A wife and her two husbands! - it can be quire eerie up there at Dusk, in the wind, as if a solitary figure could be standing there, guarding the place.

Hello Cathal, that’s a beautiful place to be buried, and they would never have imagined there could come a time for such desecration and lack of respect for their final resting place. I don’t think much to whoever secured the damaged wall up! A piece of plywood and two pieces of string! ☹️ apart from imagined family jewels possibly being in the coffins which there quite obviously were not, do you know if scrapped lead was in high demand back then? Or worse still was there much black magic known to be practiced , needing the sculls etc? I’m going right off on a tangent now I know, but it’s so isolated the robbers could have taken their time to do anything! It’s just a shame the family havnt had the remains reinterred in two modern coffins then bricked up and left in peace! That Angel was incredible. I wish I knew who created it . I am so thankful that I have never had an urge to destroy beautiful images I am unable to reproduce. I don't understand graffiti and vandalism. Maybe it stems from childhood because when I was seven yrs, old I accidentally broke a playmate's snow globe. My Mother made me apologize in person to my friend's Mother and I had to do some serious chores to earn the money to replace it. Appreciate your unique finds and reverence for History.

You can see that this wasn't the first time the Mausoleum was desecrated, as the windows had glass in them at one time, and they had to brick the windows up, only to have someone else break in again. Sadly the workers who bricked up the windows didn't do a good job, as the thieves tore the blocks down too easily.

This mausoleum was still being looked after as all this time has passed and the mausoleum hadn't been overgrown by that vine that surrounds it. There was also new corners put on the angels pedestal at one stage. This place is still cared for. so i think the door way and hopefully the coffins will be repaired again. Thanks for showing this interesting mausoleum and history of these people

I'm shocked by the wanton desecration. Landowners or not no one deserves disturbance during their endless sleep. I remember when Abney Cemetery next to my house was woefully overgrown so we, the locals, banded together to restore it as many well known people were at resr there including William Booth, who founded the Salvation Army, and Champagne Charlie amongst many great and humble souls. The group became the Friends of Abney Cemetery who still keep it in trim.

Near my home is a cemetery full of Victorian morsoleums , Unfortunately, the vandalism has been rife, and a couple of well-known junkies were prosecuted, along with a local jeweller, who was buying the items taken from the corpses in these Victorian coffins . How low can you get !
