Looking at the scroll wheel, I'm guessing one (or both) of two things happened: A) they improved the bearings so it runs smoother, or B) the fact that the ridges on the wheel are smaller means that the compressed air can't get it rolling as fast. Bigger ridges = more surface for the air to blast against = faster potential spin speed.

I dont own any of these mice but it seems like the difference is just that the older version has larger groves in the textures on the scrollwheel so there is more surface area for the air to push on making it spin faster

You're thinking wrong. The big groves are the reason the scroll wheel sounds like a jet engine in the first place. It doesn't mean it's faster, it just has a ton of wind resistance creating a whistle

@@LBCAndrew the mechanism to click the mouse wheel in and out is very prone to break on these mice and it's a known issue. Mine started showing signs of wear after 3 years and I was very careful with it. They are basically considered consumable components.

@@ShayneHartford well the mechanism itself isn't really broken, it still engages fine, but sometimes the click and actual mouse wheel turn aren't aligned anymore, which is frustrating when it happens. I couldn't be bothered with repairing it, so I just bought a new mouse lol. But thanks for the tip. Now that I think of it the spring could maybe be part of the issue. Maybe I'll take a look in mine when I find the time

The old scroll wheel has much larger and deeper groves(starting at a level 7), whereas the new one has much more shallow grooves. This would affect the amount of air it catches. I.e. the same amount of air pressure will translate to less force applied to, and less momentum gained by the new wheel. How much of impact this would have I'm not but definitely something to note

As someone who has owned both the G502 and G502X Plus, it is really not that bad. The scroll wheel feels a lot lighter which I love and it just has a better feel all around. I’ve used my G502 for so long that the triangular pattern on the side of the mouse got filled in with some finger dirt and oils. The new pattern is quite resistant to that and I love it. The new switches are cool too and the sniper button paddle is a lot better, with the magnetic stopper replacement being really useful for someone like me who has ADHD and likes to click all the buttons on my mouse all the time

No, I think the new one is an improvement. I have the old wired one, I bought it like in 2017 after my G600 kept double-clicking, and it's still going good. My Lil bro is using it since I'm using master mx 3s now for work. The thing is, I and my brother both have sweaty hands and the scroll wheel would gradually be disfigured then it kinda got held up and won't scroll as smooth. So looking at the new wheel with the rubber and stuff, I think it's an improvement that I've been waiting for.
