the fact that there's a mongolian metal band that uses electric erhus and a throat-singing vocalist reminds me that even though the political world seems to be more inundated every day by xenophobic idiots trying to insularize the planet back to the dark ages, there are musicians everywhere who, on the contrary, grok what it's *all* about

At this point I can't tell if Em going "METAMORPHOSIS huh Russ" while wearing butterfly earrings is cosmic irony or them just messing with us Harp through pedals is great! And this channel's also a great example of how whatever instrument you play, you can use a bit of tech to make all kinds of cool sounds and interesting music. It's not just for guitarists and keyboard players, and playing a classical instrument doesn't mean you need to put yourself in a box. Also you can hit the box with a mic and turn that into music too!

@@emilyharpist honestly one of my fav things is giving someone who can't play a guitar and some kind of effects (delay is great too, for the layering) and letting them just create and explore without needing to know what they're doing - when even just scratching the strings or tapping the body makes a cool sound, people really get into experimenting! Maybe Russ could do a live Kafka reading while you produce a soundtrack too! Maybe hearing a harp make cockroach sounds is all the purists need to be converted

Glorious stuff! I’m reminded of Brian Eno’s collaborations with Harold Budd (Ambient 2 and The Pearl), where Eno treats Budd’s pianos with all sorts of fx from delays and chorus through to shimmer reverb, which Eno was pretty much inventing at the time through creative patching. The beauty of the piano is still there, but transformed in all sorts of beautiful ways to add layers to the improvisation. Pianos are amazing but not sacrosanct; and the same applies to harps.

Here's the thing I love the most out of using pedals to turn the harp into a synth: sympathetic resonance. The way that the harp strings resonate into the wood and the wood transfers a subtle resonation into the other strings creates a very full and lush sound. It's part of why the harp sounds the way it does, but it's not something we normally perceive much. But when effects pedals pick up all those other subtle resonances and amplify them, you get a sound that is so much bigger than just the notes played. That's something that most synths could never pull off, at least not organically. Amazing sound.

I do not grasp why people can't imagine liking the natural acoustic sound of the harp AND the harp through pedals at the same time. I mean, if I say I like green curry, I'm not saying I hate chocolate cake, am I? It's like people can't love something without hating something else -- to them, love is the icky brussels sprouts they will only eat if they get some yummy hate brownies afterwards or something. 😮‍💨 Sometimes when I watch human behavior, I feel like Jane Goodall.

The Miku Fart was an auditory nightmare, but I definitely couldn't tell it was a harp! 5/5 The other pedal combinations were much more pleasing to hear. Solid 5/7 for them. I still don't *get* the shock people have with the sound signal. The harp isn't *physically* making these final sounds. The acoustic quality isn't impeded. This is as scandalous as a composer in the 90s using a midi harp in a Gameboy game, or a film distorting a recording for an effect. It's taking a signal that is already dry and adding different textures and colors purposefully (or experimentally) to create a different sound. It's common! And the harp is still making its characteristic sound!

I absolutely loved every second of this (yes, including the fart pedal lol). I was introduced to your content via Rob Scallon a while back and I think this is so much more than just "somebody playing the harp". It's an auditory experience. The ability to take an instrument that sounds beautiful in its own right and transcending it into a vast soundscape full of emotion and expression is amazing. I would urge people to appreciate it for what it is, rather than demean it for what it isn't.

I love the idea of using effects to make whatever instrument you play sound like anything you want, and I love the beautiful sounds you can make with the harp, it is so ethereal! I never knew this stuff was possible but its so awesome and cool and as a music lover and composer thank you for introducing me to amazing new beautiful sounds

Man. This is giving me some serious inspiration. I'm just a hack keyboardist, but I know effects inside and out. A big part of being an artist is just knowing how to use your tools, and you're motivating me to use mine much more creatively. Thanks for the vids!

@@emilyharpist The harp is practically a vertical keyboard and has all the potential of being an alternative keyboard. My dream is to have a harp where the strings are just midi controller that can play whatever sound you desire. Laser Harps are very close to that.

So many interesting pedals and combinations, I think I'd spend a couple of years just playing with all that, really digging those synthesis sounds. Exploring the sound leads to great art, as proven by the likes of Vangelis, J.M. Jarre, Brian Eno, and other greats

The work you and Russ have been doing is priceless. First and foremost for allowing a lot of viewers to get acquainted with the Harp, which is simply NOT a very accessible instrument (and I only remember ever listening to it through Andreas Vollenweider and some classical pieces). Second, the knowledge you guys have and provide about pedals is immense, bar none. There will always be haters - and most likely, envious people. I, for one, am very thankful for your knowledge and humor.
