Sad to see the dugout being taken apart but there is a number of lessons here... 1) Do not put it in a hole with 4 sides because there is nowhere for water to escape. 2) Always put it into the side of a sloping surface with the front slightly lower than the back for drainage. 3) If there is something wrong with the design or placement do not hesitate to move location and start again. 4) Your health is your most important asset - look after it. Looking forward to what comes next.

I've jst discovered this channel. This is the type of place u could live a lifetime and hardly see another person. Dangerous and beautiful. A bounty of natural foods, fish, and different animals to hunt. Plenty trees to construct a small cabin. A hard way to live, but, I'd imagine, tremendously satisfying? Got my sub.

I know how hard you worked on that dugout and it was beautiful!! But when I saw how flooded it got while you were building that foundation initially, I thought if that water collects like that and has no outlet, it will be stagnate and cause problems for the wood. It was such a great idea, but the location was not ideal. So glad you salvaged that wood and are going to build another cabin. A good friend to be the cook is always a blessing!! Would love to have fresh mushrooms just in your yard!!! Great seeing Hugo ❤🐕

I don't have to go to the woods to meet a bear. They come right into my front yard. Several years ago, there were four cubs (born the spring before,) in the front yard, and this year I had two much larger -- maybe born a year ago -- who were right on my front porch. These are Grizzly Bears (a large Brown bear) and get very big. While I am sympathetic to their need to fatten up for the winter, I do not want it to be one of my cats they find for food. Most of the town I live in was built on the small streams that run off the mountains that surround us, and all of these were, before man, deer and bear trails. Like the one my brother lives by, and the one that runs by my parent's old place, and the one that I live on. It's hard to get away from these, so we just learn to live with these beautiful but frightening creatures That is a very beautiful location where the log cabin was built. I could live there!

Sure, you take apart the “dug out”, use some of the building material and join with new. Build in such a way to avoid the water from rain, etc. Building into a hill side worked for me many years ago when a built a site that I came back to every 3 seasons. The peace & quiet was great!

Sorry you had the water problem that then caused damp and mold. Question how are you going to stop the mold spores infestation if you reuse the timber again in a new cabin/dugout? Just watching you pull it down and thinking how long it took to build. Good luck on your new venture.

Many dugouts were flooded in the Springtime….the sandy soil allows water to move easily. The dugout is a cool idea, but it does not seem to be very practical in your soil-type. sorry of your loss. You are so smart to take the dugout all apart, and re-use the wood. You did so much work on it…..much wood construction material to use! Stay safe, and please stay out of the evil reaches of the P-man
