Kalani & Sav's Unexpected Irish Pub Experience - McCreary’s in Franklin, TN
Kalani and Sav set out to enjoy a classic Irish feast at McCreary’s Irish Pub & Eatery in Franklin, Tennessee, expecting hearty, comforting dishes. But what they got left them completely baffled.
The bangers and mash, a dish known for its rich, savory onion gravy smothering juicy sausages and creamy mashed potatoes, arrived at their table looking… off. Instead of a luscious gravy cascading over the dish, they were met with four lonely slices of cheese-no explanation, no warning, just cheese. Kalani stared at the plate, trying to process the culinary crime before him. Where was the gravy? Why was there cheese?
Meanwhile, the fish and chips delivered a more traditional experience-golden, crispy battered cod paired with chunky fries and homemade tartar sauce. The jacket potato, a staple of UK comfort food, rounded out their meal, offering a simple yet satisfying touch.
McCreary’s, a Franklin institution since 2002, is well-loved for its authentic Irish pub atmosphere and traditional dishes, but this unexpected twist on a British classic left Kalani and Sav shocked and slightly concerned for the fate of bangers and mash in Tennessee.
Would you eat bangers and mash with cheese instead of gravy? Let us know in the comments!

😂. Depends. If it's got loads of flavours added it wouldn't work. Basic sausage uses a basic Lincolnshire style recipe. Mostly like sage and onion stuffing with rusk. Was mostly 60+% rusk in the mix I made as a butcher yrs ago. Some mixers would be extra spicy. Like dragon ones in Cardiff. Wouldn't work with onion gravy.

Dry bangers? You brown the sausages on a low heat, then add a whole sliced onion to the pan until they're softened, mix Bisto onion powder in cold water, pour into pan covering the sausages totally, bring to boil, lower heat, cover and simmer for 25 mins until gravy has thickened, stir occasionally. Serve with mash potato. My mum from Dublin, Ireland used to add some finely grated raw onion to the mash for extra flavour.

I'm not Irish but I cannot see them putting anything but a nice Irish cheese on it, if any at all. They are great at making the most of a little amount of food. Irish Stew for instance! Irish cheese is super so why does an Irish pub not give you Irish cheese, weird one! The Fish and chips looked well OK for me, better than they dish up in Australia (they ought to know better as after all they are our EX criminals). Well done on that one. The Baked potato looked very interesting indeed, I liked the bacon idea never seen that touch. Enjoying your channel immensely!

An interest fact abound English cheddar (and it is English because it should come from Cheddar Gorge) is that many, many years ago, cows fed on a diet high on carotene (from carrot and many green leaves) produced milk that made an orange, more tasty cheese. The cheese commanded a higher price so unscrupulous cheese makers started dying their cheese, This practice was outlawed here many years ago, but seems to have stuck with the cheese you have there that claims to be cheddar

I've had it with cheesy mash before on occasion as a council estate kid back in the 1980s, and it was good - so perhaps in the restaurant they didn't realise you grate the cheese into the mash and let it melt? Although authentically it's pork sausages, mashed potato and onion gravy. That is all. No more, no less. It's kinda like serving spaghetti bolognese with chili instead of the bolognese sauce - it's still delicious, but it ain't authentic!

A little suggestion on those little pots of ''dips''. If you are using cutlery don't dip the food into them. Put some on your knife then onto the fish or whatever. Remember the mustard? A little on your knife then the meat allows you to regulate it to your liking. If you're using your fingers then dipping or poring some sauce over the fish is fine.

This is mashed potato with grated cheddar well mixed in. I personally enjoy it with chopped onions in the water when boiling the potatoes and lots of tomato ketchup. My wife isn't keen on this version, so I don't have the onions often, but I always have the ketchup. I do enjoy the traditional bangers and mash with onion gravy too. Bangers and mash, like many have commented, needs a nice creamy mash and onion gravy and peas. Even Irish bangers and mash has onion gravy. The fish looks like it's been frozen from a box at source. I don't think it's fresh fish that has been battered in their kitchen

Me and my wife shop like the both of you when we can. We both have ADHD and so I don't like wasting time and my wife tends to research what she wants then will seek out the items she wants and heads straight towards the items. If she sees something that is interesting then she will lose track of time. People with ADHD tend to be attracted to each other, so it's possible that you two both have it.

Fish and chips, always vinegar first, then the salt, that way the salt can stick to the fish and chips, if you salt first, the vinegar washes the salt off. also when you guys, we are talking the US here calling them English or Irish pubs, I have yet to see one that even slightly resembles both our style of pub atmosphere, including the food served, plus no british beer on draft, only bottled, (did you know that UK bottled Newcastle brown ale is one of Clint Eastwoods favourite beers) and just because you serve Guiness, does not make it an Irish pub, any American who has visited the UK or Ireland, can vouch your pub versions are nothing like ours.

You could always provide feedback to the diner to suggest an onion gravy to legitimise their Irish claim! It's a simple dish to be fair!

The thing with British cooking is it’s pretty simple at a basic level. You can tailor it the way you like it from there. Everyone will tell you you’ve got it wrong of course but that’s all part of the experience!. Putting cheese with bangers and mash is a bit out there but I can see it being interesting.

In the USA, Bangers are NOT a thing. They would have to have them custom made as I don't know of any major meat producer here making them. Even in the UK, banger quality varies, usually poor.

Never have creamed mash. To much fat. Just add a little bit of butter or cheese. Because the cream goes runny when you pour on gravy. It's the same with things like shepherds pie.

@@neilgayleard3842 Creamy as in soft, i don't add cream either, just loads of butter lol. Heston Blumenthal boils his potato skins in a little milk, drains and adds the liquid to the spuds with butter, giving a more silky mash.

It's just about the fat. To much makes it runny..It's the same with the gravy in a shepherds pie. If either is over done it becomes a mess.

OMG I thought the cheese was going to be mixed into the potatoes or on top, not just slices of cheese on the side of the plate!!!! They cut the sausages in half to stop them exploding whilst cooking and they cook quicker, where I am we would call the potatoes with the skin on & Mashes as 'Crushed' potatoes . Salt Vinegar Salt is correct, the vinegar washes the 1st salting to the bottom of the food so needs more on the top

The only way to have cheese with that dish is to stir strong grated cheddar through the mash. Also, the lack of onion gravy is worrying.

Bangers and Mash on sliced cheese..😮😮... No Way!.... Should be served with gravy, preferably onion gravy... Only way cheese should/could be involved is maybe a little in the mash, but that is a personal preference... Bangers and mash, with baked beans is ok to... Colcanon is traditional Irish mash to, it is mash mixed with some green cabbage and is gorgeous....xx

They just have an Irish name.. doesn't mean you can open an Irish restaurant. I probably would have asked for who owns this establishment and see how many generations ago they left Ireland cos I'm guessing a lot.

The recently cut it down the middle is to make it look like you're getting a bigger portion than just two sausages but what they don't realize is that all the juice That's supposed to come spilling out of a nice fatty pork sausage is gone. You know what I mean I love to cut into a nice snappy skin and have the pork juices just flow everywhere and be able to have it go into my potatoes instead of having it pre-sliced and then kind of cooked like that it just know it just doesn't it's not right

I love cheese, but Personally cheese has no business being anywhere near 'Bangers & Mash'. There are various ways Brits ( I AM one) would serve this, but I would get some good quality British sausages and serve with buttery mash potatoes and plenty of slow cooked caramelised fried onions and some Heinz baked beans. Some people like bangers & mash with onion gravy, but in my family we've always had it with the fried onions and beans.
