$40 an hour for 100 hours of unskilled work is extortionate. This kind of artless epoxy stuff has been done to death. It's a roughly constructed and rough looking upside down chopping board with legs. He did well to sell it for $4K.

Now, suppose you made a bench, or table like that, where each large slice came from a different type of tree, with labels. Imagine growing up being able to recognize each type of wood from early childhood. Sixty years ago, I visited the Guantamano naval library and looked through a set of reference manuals that described every useful engineering property of every type of wood that architechs used to design their long-gone tall ships. I also checked & found that the Boston Naval Ship Yard had a set of books. Not sure if it was the same set I saw, or whether it had always been there, tucked away in the Charlestown (Boston) Naval Shipyard. The USS Constituition is maintained as a holy site for the US Navy. A "Plank-Owner" is still the name that describes someone who was part of the ship's crew when it was being built. 68 years ago, I learned my Scouting knots from an elderly sailer who managed the sails high above the deck on tall ships. 22 years later, I served aboard a submarine tender whose sister ship had Teak decks. Young sailers of that ship had to scrub the decks on their knees with pumace stones. Today, Coast Guard sailors, and Navy Sailors still climb aloft on tall training ships at night to tend sails in horizontal rain. I have met a few people who have done that. Their eyes gleam with confidence as they recall their experience. Lignam Vitae is one type of wood that once once used as a the propeller shafts of iron ships. The Navy used to say wooden ships and Iron men. Give it a try. I wonder what the Navy would say.
@marmotaworks

Nice story. I didn't know lignum vitae by that name; I looked it up and knew it as palo de hierro (ironwood). I believe it's the hardest wood that exists.

few comments: I think 4k is less to charge for it but people who dont know what goes into making this will think its very high so i usually reserve such pieces for me. Also it would be good to invest in a trim router for trim operations. I cant even imagine using full size router for that purpose. I agree that router is the scariest power tool I have used.

Very nice work. It’s nice to see other uses of epoxy other than river tables. What is the type of wood you use. The variety you spoke about is new to me. Where is it from. Please keep voice over it truly helps make your work both interest and educational.

It's Acacia. At the moment, voiceover is winning by a large margin...

Great videos, and very informative with your approach to the builds. Well done. I like the voiceovers rather than subtitles, I think hearing allows one to focus more than reading does. You've got a very satisfied new subscriber.

Just finished watching 3 videos of yours. 1. Beautiful! 2. $4k is pretty reasonable price! 3. Plus one for voiceover over subs

Thanks for making this video. I like watching, especially the end grain woodwork, my favorite part is seeing the finish applied after all the careful sanding - revealing the hidden wood grain that you can almost hear when it pops. Thanks for leaving the router footage in and sharing that important safety tip. Routers have more torque than people expect. I was waiting to see if you drilled a bunch of half inch wide and deep holes into the mating surfaces of the wood to allow more surface area for the epoxy to grab & hold. Would that help make it sturdier? Two inch table tops seem sturdy enough so it never occurred to me that a four inch thick epoxy bench would have any flex issues. That steel tube frame looks like it would safely support a couple of hungry Linebackers having lunch at the Dallas Cowboys training camp. And by the way, I like voice-over better, I like to concentrate on what you are showing us rather than try to keep up with the reading.

Thank you for your comment. I haven't made holes in the edges. Since it is so thick, it has a lot of surface area for gluing, and I don't think it is necessary. Also, as you said, that frame makes it practically unbreakable.

amaizing work!! Just one question. Why do you use the router after applying the epoxy instead of a planer? Thanks for your videos! You inspired me!

Thank you! End grain wood should not be passed through a planer.

This is a piece of art. Question, how you let the wood move while attached to that steel frame? I like the idea of using metal but I don"t know how to handle wood expansion with the metal.
@marmotaworks

I always make the holes in the steel slightly larger than the diameter of the screw. This allows small moves

First time viewer here, and the voice-over is part of why I'll be back for more. Wouldn't these be stronger if there were dominoes or similar holding each adjacent pair of wood slices?

Sure, but with the steel frame it's not necessary

I am truly inspired by your creative project. I do like the voiceover and you probably could have asked for more money. My question to you is, because I saw so many checks in the wood blocks, were you nervous about them opening in the future? Is the final still product holding up? I can ask you this because you are an honest woodworker. Kudos

If the wood is completely dry, there’s no problem. I have a table like that in my dining room for over a year now, and it's just like the first day.
