Insulating a steel hull is kind of a contentious issue. Using spray foam insulation especially is one of those things that everyone has an opinion on, but after doing quite a bit of research, this is where we ended up...

Looks like it's coming along well. Spray foam is a pain in the butt to get cleaned and trimmed after the application, but it looks like you've got it well under control. I hope your mouth is doing better by now, mine took a little over a month for the swelling to go down completely after I had some impacted molars removed. Not a lot of fun, but it did decrease the frequency of my headaches.

I’m pretty well healed up now and yes it’s crazy how quickly the headaches went away! It was like day after even with all the swelling my usual headaches were gone and they haven’t come back since. Really shoulda done this years ago… 😂🙄

Nice work! That foam sure looks like it will keep you warm and cozy. Also, loved Logan's on the fly translation of boat terms to landlubbers language: "galley and head... or the bathroom and the kitchen" 😄

Sorry guys, that foam won’t be ‘closed cell’ forever. I spent many happy hours removing saturated foam!

Knowing this project is over, but I wonder if a "Bow Saw Blade" (just the blade) would have worked? Stretched across the ribs and slowly sawed down through the foam...
@WaywardLifeSailing
@WaywardLifeSailing Жыл бұрын
we actually tried using a regular saw blade, but the angle and irregularity of the teeth meant that the blade just dug in and ripped instead of properly cutting the foam. But we have half of the boat still yet to spray foam, so any ideas you have are more than welcome!

Maybe while you have all this open you could ad wire conduits, like an inch size with holes in them for ventilation. We are just starting to fish new wiring in Laysan our VdS 34 and, well it is a nightmare.

That’s a good idea! Where are you finding you wish you had it the most?

@@WaywardLifeSailing As high as possible, I am thinking of running new conduits inside at the bottom of the cupboards that runs along the hull (so basically under the side decks). If you have AC and DC I would run AC on starboard (or where ever your shore power connection is) and DC on port. Keep in mind DC V drop on the DC side. 🙂 cheers.

That turned out really well. I thought you would use those big cans you shake and would take about fifty of them. Never seen those type with the hoses thats just like having them come spray it commercially! Did you try screwing an old saw blade to a board to cut the foam? Just run it back and forth across the frames.
@WaywardLifeSailing
@WaywardLifeSailing Жыл бұрын
Yeah we did try a saw. The way the teeth are just rips into the foam instead of properly cutting it and just creates a mess. The spray foam kits you can get at Canadian Tire or Lowes or Home Hardware!

Spray foam is the way to go, just need to prep the steel well……and don’t go too deep into the bilges.
@WaywardLifeSailing
@WaywardLifeSailing Жыл бұрын
I really wish we could go deep into the bilge! The contrast with the amount of condensation we get down there really shows how great the spray foam works for keeping things dry!

#waywardlifesailing I'm sure your past this point but I took a cheap 24" bow saw from Harbor Freight and welded some angle and new pins on it so blade was 90 degrees from original position and used it to trim foam at a friends house Logan could cobble this up in no time!

Oh thanks for the tip! We still have a bunch of spraying and trimming left to do! Videos are only 2-3 weeks behind right now

If you use Vaseline on the spray nasel the foam will not stick it works on exposed skin too.

I understand why you re-foamed the repair areas. About one fifth of my boat is foamed and I am removing it,bit-by-bit. It is hard getting rid and getting the metal clean. What was your preference versus foam?
@WaywardLifeSailing

Hi glen, I think on a steel boat, if I could not spray foam, I would probably use sheets of polystyrene and cut them an inch short and glue them in with spray foam

I just had my 2000sqft house spray foamed wall to wall for $2500 - didn't lift a finger in the process. How much did you guys spend? Did you end up using 3 bottles? How many hours of labor did you put in? I'm wondering if this is a better job to hire out rather than DIY

Originally we decided we wanted to make sure the job was done thoroughly so we decided to do it ourselves because it can be really hard to find people to do a job properly, especially with the tight spaces behind ribs etc. But the second half might be a different story if we can find someone cheaper. Was that price for closed cell or open and where are you located?
