I am Arab and this got me curious so I did my research and here's what I found. The English call the Welsh sheep-shaggers due to an old trick used by the Welsh against their gullible English neighbors in medieval times, when the English had a nasty habit of fucking sheep. When Wales adopted English law they noticed the penalty for shagging a sheep was less than stealing one (due to the English's habit) so whenever they were caught stealing a sheep they would instead say they were planning to fuck it instead to avoid the fine. I don't know if this is true, but it's still a funny story hahahah

"Wales is awesome, I think that is universally agreed. Quite apart from anything the Welsh are charming, funny and self-depreciating, and yet still manage to have a dragon on their flag. That is ballsy beyond belief. Finnish people are equally lovely, but they wouldn't dream of having a dragon on their flag. "If the history of Wales can be summed up, it is largely that the Welsh like to be left alone to enjoy themselves, people try to invade, the Welsh fight fiercely and eventually repel them, and then go back to enjoying themselves. "The Romans tried to invade and the Welsh just sort of settled in around them, took their money and waited for them to leave. The Angles and Saxons tried to invade and got short shrift. The Normans also had a pop and, for a while, were successful, until one morning the Welsh decided to have a good stretch, fetch their weapons and drive them back over the English border. England was, of course, an astonishingly easy country to invade, and was always far less cool about the whole thing than Wales. "The idea that England in some way conquered Wales is one of the most laughable ideas in British history. Edward I 'imposed his rule' on Wales after the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. This was a rare error on the part of the Welsh. Llywelyn was also know as 'Llywelyn The Last' and you have to ask who on earth would choose a king with a name like that? It's simply asking for trouble (see also 'Ethelred The Unready', 'Catherine The Doomed' and 'Olaf The Always Distracted By His Phone'). But if England was nominally in charge of Wales then nobody told the Welsh. Henry VIII for example banned the use of the Welsh language in any official capacity in the mid-16th century. In most normal countries (say Finland) this would lead to the slow death of the language, but here we are nearly 600 years later and not only is Welsh still spoken it is thriving. Nice try Henry VIII. "Interestingly, earlier laws had banned any Welsh man from carrying arms or holding office, but also banned any English man who was married to a Welsh woman from the same. Which conveniently overlooks the fact that no man married to a Welsh woman could care less about carrying arms or holding office, because they have such an awesome wife. "So what if Wales officially became part of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707, and part of the United Kingdom in 1801? It has carried on just the same. Through coal and steel, through non-conformist politics and non-conformist religion, through Dylan Thomas and the Manic Street Preachers, through being the straight-up nicest people you could meet, who could drink you under the table and would walk you to your taxi, the Welsh humbly don't really care who imagines they're in charge, they just carry on happily being Welsh. "Big challenges face the Wales of today, from the collapse of traditional industries to what on earth to do with the 'man-bun' that Gareth Bale seems to be persisting with, but they face the challenges as always, with humour, with a calm knowledge of their superiority and with a great big dragon smack-bang in the middle of their flag."

As a south european (from Italy) i see Wales as one of the very few places i could live in north Eu. There is still some sun, people are lovely and the working classes like farmers and contstrucion workers are respected just as much as lawyers and doctors (which should be the rule but it's kinda an exception in this stupidly americanized western world). Accent means identity, not ignorance. It's complitely out of my mind how people can't get this simple concept. There are people in Sicily or Naples, Alabama or South Carolina, Wales, that speak 4 languages, have a master degree in something, living upper class... and still speaking in dialect or with a strong accent when it comes to mother language. It's something cool, not to be ashamed of.

Haha I’ve spent ages trying to decide where to move within the UK. I’ve lived north and south and know the good and bad of both. But the soulless self-importance, arrogance and contempt Londoners have for rural ‘outside’ places with devastating Celtic histories... it’s just so repulsive and insulting. And so disconnected from nature. Do those people in London seem like truly happy people? Or do they just seem prejudiced and stuck up about their socioeconomic position? I’m from Newcastle with Irish/Danish we roots, so I’m not Scottish, but I’ve never been patriotic and always resented London rule. I can see the appeal, for the economy and opportunities for success (and ultimately material gain) but for overall happiness... I highly doubt it. Wales, Ireland Scotland and the North - full of honest beauty, humility and spirit. London? Well...it has a lot of buildings and people obsessed with money. Good luck to them 😂

I personally find it quite upsetting that a lot of young Welsh people don't understand our 'hatred' for the English. Our country was taken over by the English hundreds of years ago when they killed our last King Llywelyn. It's very depressing to see many of my own friends and family unable to speak our national language, it's not 'weird' its our heritage, our history and part of our culture. Stereotypes are a bit of fun and the Welsh are the more mature as they don't take it to heart, they embrace it! Cymru am Byth!

*puts on historian cap* Castles were built mostly by the Normans as fortresses of conquest. The fact there are so many tells you something about the indomitable Welsh heart. "Revenge for Gwenllian!" Cymru am Byth. and FYI, Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd (born 1097 in Aberffraw Castle, Ynys Mon; executed by Maurice de Londres in February 1136 at Chepstow castle) is NOT the same person as her descendent Gwenllian the "last princess of Wales" who was of English royal blood (via King John) as well as her Welsh blood. I recently wrote a biography of Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd and people constantly assume I mean the 13th century princess.

I'm from Wales. Born and raised in Kenfig Hill near Bridgend. So I know a lot on our relationship with the English. I have no personal problem with them but some can be arrogant in the way they speak. Regarding the stereotypes of the Welsh. They do make sense. 1. There are more sheep in Wales as sheep farming is the most common type of farming. 2. There aren't many big cities here. It's mostly small cities, towns, and villages. Only big cities I can think of are Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, and Bangor. 3. Dunno why we are seen as thick. 20% of our population is bilingual, whereas many English people can't even speak proper English anymore. And yes I can speak Welsh / Ac ydw dwy yn gallu siarad Cymraeg. I love the language because it sounds like your speaking Elvish or casting a magical spell lol. 4. Yes we are quite friendly. My friends have been on holidays abroad. We've even been to places in England like Manchester. They love us, our attitudes, our accent. I dunno what it is. Can the same be said of the English?
