Thanks Dave, very pleased with all the time you put into my bike, it was lovely to meet you in the shop, bike rides great, if I have any more issues I will definitely be seeking your advice and would highly recommend you services, thanks again, Alan.

Motor noice aside, for most Battery connection or authentication related errors I first look at the battery fixtures and the connector. Especially on this Bosch powerpack the battery usually has a lot of wiggle because the lock distance to the connector is not adjusted correctly. Over time the battery connector will rub away and leave a small indentation on the connector which lead to the motor. This allows the battery to disconnect randomly as there is not enough clamping force from the connector in the battery itself leading to the CAN bus disconnecting and turning the whole bike off. You could pry at the in battery connector to have more clamping force but replacing the battery-motor cable is a better solution after which the lock to connector distance should also be checked.

Hi Dave glad you gave the customer his options. Like you said in the video,to be £350 in parts etc for repairing the existing motor I think a new motor was probably worth it for 2 years peace of mind. Yes it could be cheaper the other way, but you won’t get two years warranty from Bosch. And what else might fail in the Motor? Great little video, thank you.

so what caused the battery error and display, the motor?
@mxs8102Ай бұрын
I am guessing here …. But since the bearings in the motor are shot, I suppose that water got into the motor somehow and at the same time damaged the control unit board which is part of the motor. And therefore was not able to authenticate any external device, be it a battery or display.
@richardkaz2336Ай бұрын
@@mxs8102 The board is coated. I recon it may have been a display battery a main battery cable connector at the battery as they need cleaning or there is a break in the display comms cable that only open circuits when the bars are in one of the hard lock position... My 2018 CX is now about to tick over to 16,000 km.

Replaced the display battery $2.50 and if fixed my dropouts and errors.

The battery error I was unable to solve, the error kept returning no matter what I did. I had planned to install that battery with the new motor to see if we got the same error, I could have also tested the battery on the capacity tester too. My feeling was that the motor was at fault.
@robertmcfadyen9156Ай бұрын
@@richardkaz2336The coated circuit board is exposed at cable connection points though , which is a weak point , and can cause chipset failure . The coating fails if it gets hot many times and with time breaks down . This is why non - communication between diagnostic tool and motor has happened in reality when cables are fine on older motors .

It’s great when parts are available however with some of the parts like in my case I could not get any help from any bike shop on buying shimano battery because all shops told me part has been discontinued so you as customer are staying with middle finger in front of your face shown by all I was lucky enough to find battery on my own search in only one place in Germany I don’t know if it’s only Shimano but it’s quite unpleasant feeling after all
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanicАй бұрын
yes, specific batteries have now been discontinued, shame as many still have them.

@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Why do Bosch motor control circuit boards sometimes lose functionality ,or diagnostic tool communication . Given that a commenter said these have a thin enamel coating on them to make them waterproof , supposedly? I have seen them become dysfunctional when cable lines are okay outside the motor housing . I understand that moisture can get into the motor housing via the bottom bracket bearings . I have done an "immersion" test on cargo line . Did this task on the video reach a positive conclusion ? A Trek Marlin 6 plus came in yesterday . Trek were slow on mid -' economy ebikes given that Giant Talon e plus have been around for several years .

What kind of repair is it when the most expensive part is replaced? A real mechanic should find the fault and fix it in the engine, not replace the entire engine. This is not a mechanic for me.
@davekozsan347Ай бұрын
Last time I went to my lbs, the labor rate was over $100/hr. Sooo, spend a couple of hours on a rebuild, $200 on an overhaul kit, and guessing $200 on a board to maybe fix the fault code. That comes to at least $600 vs. $700 for a new motor with a 2 yr warranty. A no brainer to me. Dave, you made the correct recommendation to your customer!

So you don't understand the phrase cost effective? Congrats on the dumbest comment on here. He made the right decision.

@sasamilovuk2412 good luck with the repair of the faulty PCB in that motor. Given the fact that it is not available as a service part, only the transplant from the working second-hand unit (damaged in another way) could solve it. It's very hard to find such one (plus you would need to be 100% sure that it really works). You could wait for such occasion for a couple of months. Do you think that the customer would be happy about that? The motor replacement was indeed a best option, in terms of cost effectiveness and respect for time and money of the customer.
@sasamilovuk2412Ай бұрын
@@micktheshaggy3977 In many cases I have banal failures, such as dead solder on the board, etc. You would be surprised to know how many times a soldered point loosens or does not have good contact. But not opening the motor and seeing what it is, but immediately ordering a new one, for me that is anything but craftsmanship.
