Always good to watch how someone else does it 😆. Personally, I always use the side panel, as the nylon always seems a bit on the worn side when I need to do this. I have also had a machinist make me a press tool for the NDS bearing! I think our only real difference of approach is I put the bash guard back on and use a hub puller (just a cheap 5 ton hydraulic) to extract the side plate.

I think if for this customer on his budget, only the outboard bearing needed attention. I would have repacked the outboard bearings and seals with marine grease to waterproof the exterior sides, done this in prep to my past enduro and mototrials motorcycles, as they last way longer than factory grease, mind you this bike would never see that harsh environment! First time watching your channel and interested to see inside the e-motor, clear and precise explanations and video, well done.

they do a right hand side crank shaft seal £9.50 for extra protection in wet weather, had a gen 2 from 2014 these motors are pretty much bomb proof as long as no water gets to the pcb/controller and shorts it out but new bearings and its good as the day you bought it.

Firstly….. nice workshop. On to the motor, I’m a bit sceptical as to how well sealed these mid dive units are. Not particularly impressed by the amount of plastic gears in there either. Given the price for these units I feel you deserve more for your money. Given the amount of surface mount electronics inside they certainly need to be sealed better.

What don’t you like about plastic gears? Often they’re more suitable than metal, run quieter, are self lubricating, are aramid fibre reinforced for strength and are cost effective. Metal gears need lubricant and if that gets contaminated you’ll have a grinding medium that’ll wear the gears faster. Bosch know what they’re doing.

@@quazar912 it came with a 700wh battery . The range is purely dependent on what mode you use and terrain . I can easily do a day of riding if I conserve it or use it up in a few hours if I ride in turbo . Interestingly the new Brose motor for 2025 doesn’t have a belt so there will be no belt drives on the market going forward. I’m sure with the number of old units out there parts availability won’t be an issue .

Excellent video! But the noise proof at the end by simply turning the cranks is not representative for the daily use, because the motor is not in operation, since the chain is off. In reality with working motor support the noise is significantly louder

Hi Dave. I have a Haibike Hardseven 7. PX-ST motor. I'm looking to connect some lights to it via the aux plug near the motor. I want to add indicators, brake lights, tail light etc. It's difficult to determine what output it has. Need to make sure before I play with it. I believe it's a 6v dc output. Can you confirm. Then I'm going to add a DC step up box to 12v.......then I should be able to add almost any lights for motorbikes/scooters?

I had a noisy Bosh perf line CX motor on a 500km Scott Ebike. At every ride and after about 1 hour riding, the motor was starting to be noisy, always after an hour or so. The engine was still covered by the warranty. Bosch never found out what caused the noise and they decided to change the motor by a brand new one.

Some of the bearings used are off the needle type and need even pressure and strait force, some are large and need a higher force, some are delicate and would fail if inserted incorrectly. A hydraulic press is the better solution.

Fortunately for me , "noise " is not an issue . after all an e-bike motor is a machine with moving parts and when parts rub together , some amount of sound is created . if you want a "silent " bike , get one without a motor .

When you say the bearing is expensive, what ammount are we talking about? If it's really expensive, take an old bearing with you to a bearing specialist and ask them for price for an simmilar one and usually it cost just 10 usd as most bearings are standard size and even the same manufacturer as OEM bosh ones.

i'll bet that the majority of problems with bosch motors is the result of abuse by the rider and an unreasonable expectation of longevity . a former friend of mine ,drove his moms new BMW at insane speeds on the Autobahn for a year and was then surprised that the motor blew up . even the best built machine on the planet will fail if abused .

I own a Bosch Gen.2 Ebike since 2015. I have replaced 2 motors already on 7k, 8k under warranty. So free of change for me. Now 3rd motor reached 10k and it sounds same as yours, so I am currently thinking about 3 scenarios: repair myself (costs 130 Euro for Service Kit), repair in the shop (unknown costs) or replace motor (600 Euro). I wanna keep my bike, so even if it comes to worth 600 Euro, I will pay it. Thanks for the video, it is really helpful.

It could be that the driveside bearing is failling which is very common., I would recommend a Bosch Service Kit for Repairs, black (BDU2XX), I can sell you one at £105.00 to do your self or I can do it for you at £196.00. Hi, great question, the simple answer is that it all depends on the climate it’s ridden in. New motors are still available, gen 2 are still mechanically repairable but not electronic faults on the boards

Bosch burned me pretty good. Motor dies a few months shy of 2 years. The shop held it till after the warranty. Now the motor barely has power, and they say the bike is not fixable. Niner 2020 wfo e9.

Go back to your bike shop, even out of warranty bosch will consider helping you. but you said that the bike shop had the motor, so its not your fault.

I wonder why the moisture / water ingress is so destructive for the PCBs in Bosch motors. It seems they do not apply a protective coating to the PCBs, or do they? Such process costs couple of pennies in the large scale manufacturing process.

@@peteturner8493 anything that has moving parts and bearings will need replacing at some point my old bosch gen 2 had over 10,000 miles on it but the nylon transfer gear was near its end and needed all it bearings changed and was as good as new.

@@soundwave6769 Ok nylon gears not so reliable but good quality sealed bearings should last longer, take a car alternator as an example....the Bosch motor cost enough so I'd say they built in obsolescence? Doesn't explain water ingress though but poor design would!

@@peteturner8493 some motors are better than others at keeping the water out but brose are the worst as dont like any wet weather and a pita to get apat but none of them are water proof where you could ride it up a stream but if a controller does short out out of warranty you are screwed as dont sell them as most of these companys are anti rrepair wont sell any parts or will even fix a motor out of warranty even if you wanted to pay them says it all really i have also had a dongle on my bike so can hit over 30mph and if it can do that sort of milage and just cost 200 quid for all new bearings thats good enough for me

Hi, Thanks for watching, Bosch replaced the gaskets on some models for better ones, this one was in good condition.

Hi, Thanks for watching and your comments, The gen 2 is a good motor, the shaft bearing seals could have been much much better but providing its well maintained it should last for many miles. The gen 4 is a proper pig to overhaul, Ive not done a video on one yet because Im still learning about it but for sure parts are so easy to break whilst stripping down.
