Not a single bike mechanic in the US has offered to service my hub, I first brought it in at 600 mi. I can't really find a shop to rehub a wheel they all want me to buy a new one. You're clearly a master mechanic!

I would hardly suggest being able to diagnose, then the replace a front ring, free hub, cassette and chain as being 'basic bike maintenance'. What does it matter what people refer to themselves as anyway... I don't think we need snobbery within the enjoyment of riding your own bike how you want to ride is as an individual.

Hi Dave, Will see what I can do
@mfren62532 жыл бұрын
Dave’s videos shows the importance of regular maintenance and proper installation. I replace the consumables when needed but the hubs, even Bontrager hubs, should last a few thousand kms/miles with occasional maintenance. I think my Bontrager hub has 10k+ kms without an issue. I kinda wish it would fail so I can upgrade to i9’s hydra 32 spoke. Maybe if I stop maintaining the hubs. 🤔

Those Bontrager hubs are absolute bobbins. I swapped my Rail hubs for Pro 4s after about 300 miles, Trek did give me £150 against a warranty claim, but they still insist on putting crap parts on expensive bikes.

Howdo dave, it seems to me that trek bearings aren't that good, I own and use regularly my trek rail 7, I love it, i replaced all the bearings in the rear wheel/ free hub at 1000 mile and I've got 1500 on now with same cassette and front gear, just changed chain incase it snapped, I've got a slight annoying noise what's just developed and I think its bearings in the frame, you can hear it free wheeling and under load.

Hey up. Hope your ok, frame bearings take a lot of punishment, especially the two main pivots near the bottom bracket.

@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Jon, Yes it certainly will, its easy to do. its the freehub body that will need more maintenance.
@mtbboy19932 жыл бұрын
the rotor does not sound too bad, I usually put mine up in a truing stand and true the rotor, I have the Parktool rotor add on. but new rotor for every ride would be crazy. I somehow manage to bend a rotor quite often. I have 223mm Trickstuff Dähle now, I've experienced a squeak with them, instead of a tick tick. I've not experienced that before. I was used to the rick tick of Hope rotors. I will probably bend all rotors. not sure what is causing it. But in some rides it can be sticks or something getting in there. But I've always experienced a bit of rotor warping.

How long does that 14mm Allen key need to be to reach the freehub to loosen it? Also, Does it need to be the bare key like you used or would a stub Allen key as part of a 1/2 socket and extension work?

Actually now after watching the whole video, that brake rotor is probably not as bent as originally seemed. I think it’s got displacement issues because of the bad bearings, like the chain and cassette do.

My Rail 5 hub bearings have just started to rumble, that's after about 18 months and 4000 miles. The original wheels that were fitted from new, barely lasted 400 miles. The dealership was very erratic service wise. They twice bodged the wheel, then finally sorted it under warranty. The original wheels were cup and cone which literally fell to bits. The replacements were sealed bearing. When you pay £4900 for a bike, you expect it to be decent quality from the get go. It seems a lot of rails have failures due to poor build, poor quality control and cheap components. I've got mine just about sussed now, after a lot of toil, time and expense. I wouldn't touch another new trek bike, with a big pole ! If you're thinking of buying one, look for a 2nd hand one that's had the snags sorted, the crappy components and tyres replaced. Actually, just avoid trek and buy a cube!🤔😄
