Today, the History Guy tells the stories of two little-remembered battles of the civil war, fought west of the Mississippi. The first is one of the earliest battles in the war, where forces met to decide control of the key state of Missouri in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. Later in the war, a Confederate general put together a rag-tag army to threaten the Missouri again, and met a union force at the battle of Prairie Grove.

My Great Great Grandfather joined the Union and served with the 8th Missouri Volunteer Federal Cavalry, attained the rank of Corporal and served until the war ended. He took part on the battle of Pea Ridge, the taking of Little Rock and numerous other small battles and skirmishes.

As a car buff I do recognize Charles De Gaulle's car (33:38) that "saved his life because of the hydraulic suspension..." (thank the Big Car YT channel for that). It was a CITROEN DS from the '60s (the car that became the basis for PSA creating a luxury brand above Peugeot and Citroen). That car was MADE THAT WAY, not specially built (but it was the main reason he asked for it as his "company car"). You can drive it at full speed with one of the tires blown off. Probably the most stable cars ever built...

I've read fairly extensively about the war in Missouri. Just fascinating. Especially Shelby's Confederate raid from northern Missouri to Arkansas, then back, the massacre at the overwhelmingly German settlement of Cole Camp, the surrealistic occurrence in Florence, the battle of Sedalia, Lexington, Marshall...jaw-dropping stuff.

You should do a video about the Red River Campaign if you haven't already, during the Civil War.

I grew up in North Louisiana. I was a little Civil War reenactor as a teen in the 90s. I reenacted the battles of Pleasant Hill, Mansfield, Pea Ridge, Shiloh, Raymond, Clinton, among others

Wilson’s Creek (MO) and Pea Ridge (AR) are close enough together to do a tour of both in a single day - and worth it

Question: I have been unable to find out what ship my father was on in WWII . He received 3 bronze stars , and a purple heart [ which he refused to collect ] . 1 Star was for the flotilla his ship was in , the second for his Ship group, and the 3rd for the ship he was on. The purple heart was for the injury he received during the North Atlantic battle . Being of German ancestry he was assigned to a Liberty ship on the gunnery team . He was the only survivor of that team . But when I tried to find the information every one I spoke to just let the question fade away , this included the USN . Can you find the battle where 3 bronze stars were issued to the N. Atlantic fleet ? I have the Award certificates , can I claim those medals , and how . It was so traumatic to my father he never spoke of it while alive , and he removed the Ship tattoo he had .

I note that the battlefields around Culpeper, VA, Cedar Mountain and Brandy Station, are being expanded and preserved. Both sides occupied the area for most of the war. Might be worth an examination.

Could you do an episode dedicated to the British involvement in the American Civil War? The Trent Affair, the Bermuda blockade-runners, and the slaves from the south stowing away on the blockade runners return trips to Bermuda, the secret building of Confederate warships in Liverpool, and Manchesters cotton mills refusing to buy "King Cotton" from the south, and Lincoln writing to the cotton mill workers of Manchester...to thank them?

Could you do an episode on the Galvanized Yankees, captured Confederate soldiers who enlisted in the Union army to fight Indians? I've always been curious about this.

My Great Great Grandfather was a Union scout in southwest Missouri. He help in rescuing a union soldier with information on the confederate forces. Later this man's daughter became my step Great Grandmother. My Grandfather's mother died shortly after giving birth to him. My Great Grandfather then married the rescued man's daughter.

The ultimate lesson of war is that it’s a waste of everything involved. Shamefully we never really learn that lesson.

Interesting, but what about the battles even farther west? We never hear of Glorietta Pass or other battles in the Confederate territories. I think that is history that needs to be remembered.

Question, have you covered actions below Arkansas like the Red River campaign and Vicksburg? Or, are you going to work around it like the majority of "historians" do? Or, did miss it?

Sorry history guy, you made a mistake. You said we haven't fought on American soil since. There was the attack on Pearl harbor, which we did fight back, although not very effectively. Additionally it was fighting in the Aleutian Islands in AK
