Not only that, but her character is so underrated, she could've been way more developed as a character, in Mockingjay she was tortured and it was never really delved into (for obvious reasons) but it seems like such a waste, she was basically useless to either side, the Capitol wanted information that she couldn't give, and the rebels obviously didn't trust her, it was just such a waste of a good character!

Effie is, in my view, the most interesting and wonderful character. She was NEVER mere comic relief, never unimportant--and it was a shame that we got so little follow-up on her in Mockingjay. (The movies essentially fixed that, but left out the torture bit, which is pretty danged significant.) I never found any reason to see her as anything but selfless, and my appreciation of her depth goes so, so much further than "She was a silly heartless Capitol goon who suddenly became a good person thanks to almighty Katniss Everdeen." Prim is not immune though? If you read the book, she always complained about being assigned to District 12 and hoped to move to District 1 or 2. She never really cared for those tributes because she'd only know them for a week before they died. Katniss and Peeta, being winners, showed her that they're more than just "tributes"; they're people, so naturally she grew to know them (also doesn't hurt that she got part of the attention as well). Her relationship with Haymitch also improved: Katniss was the one who "sobered" him up; in the meantime, he was a drunk who also didn't care much for the tributes. But I agree: they did an excellent job of showing how Effie grew from a snob to an actual human being. And even though she should have been imprisoned in Mockingjay, I like that they took liberty and showed her in District 13 without her flamboyant looks.

Katniss's mom went blank on Prim and Katniss after her husband died, and throughout the first movie I kind of saw that in her personality and the way she acted. But in this, she raises her three fingers and she looks so defiant it makes me think that seeing Katniss in the Games and seeing her being Reaped again jolted her out of that and made her realize how angry she is towards the Capitol. It didn't take me until this point to love Effie. From her introduction I recognized her super-smiley, seemingly over-excited, excessively cheery & bubbly & bouncy facade as a forced but necessary act (one that would inevitably start to crack sooner or later.) She's a mere cog in the system, and there's not a thing she can do to stop it. All she can do is try her very best on behalf of her district and its tributes, which she does. I never disliked her. Making assumptions was all too easy; right away in the book, Katniss talks to you about this lady as if she knows her personally and/or can read her mind. But I didn't let the narrator dictate what I thought of other people. The more she hammered me with "You should hate this person," the more I saw that there was no actual reason to. I've never seen Effie's development as a simple "Oh, the oblivious dolt who loved child-murder was suddenly, miraculously changed when these two magically super-special people came along." I always gave her a great deal more credit than that. I saw it more like them unwittingly helping her to start overcoming the fear of her true self--beginning to trust and embrace it more, as opposed to continually repressing and rejecting it in favor of what her culture pressures her to be. Accepting that it's possible for those around her to be the ones who are wrong. That compassion is not weakness. Butterflies are symbols of metamorphosis and transformation. They begin life in one form...they enter a tight, confining, restrictive cocoon inside which they begin to undergo subtle and then dramatic changes...ultimately emerging in a new, freer and more empowered form. This seems fitting. It isn't a matter of her not "having the guts" to stand up to the Capitol (indeed, she's more honest when the risk is only to herself); it's the fact that that would do less than no good. She can't change the way things are, or doesn't believe she can. It could only create a mess of trouble and put others in danger. She feels alone and helpless and, in her home, pretty much is. And this is why she's my favorite. The movies did not change her or "humanize" her; it's there all along if you bother to read between the lines and think, consider the subtext.

Jacek Mazur Both. Relieved as she likely didn't want both Katniss and Peeta to die but sad because that means Haymitch will instead. Perhaps the prevailing emotion in her voice right then was mainly relief-- the idea of losing both of the star-crossed lovers was probably on her mind, but not in a way that's selfish and ignored Haymitch. I love this scene because it shows the sympathy people in the Capitol have for the other districts. Yes, they have no fear of hunger or having no shelter but they themselves were victims of tyranny as well. In the books you see so many Capitol citizens who sympathized the districts. They knew it was wrong but if they said anything they too would become victims (just look at what happened to Katniss' stylists). So, in this scene you see that break in Effie's mask. She chose this job for a reason: to help these kids survive. And finally after all her years of working she finally has not one but two victors that she and Haymitch were able to assist in getting them out of the games only to have them meet a certain death a year later. To finally have success only for it to be taken away must be absolutely devastating and you can see at this moment she is done with the Games.

@crackshipsarelife7 жыл бұрын
lolo loulou Yeah, but she knew Haymitch for a very long time. The 74th wasn't her first games as an escort. I read that she had been working for a few years with Haymitch. I read also that she cried at night because she felt sorry for every tribute she had chosen and that they died, but she couldn't do it in front of the others especially if they are the people of the capital. Honestly, it seems ever since she is in charge of district 12 this is the first time a victor came from her district, let alone 2. From her perspective she's getting cheated out of her triumph of getting a victor through the games. That's my interpretation anyways.
@agirlhasn0name7 жыл бұрын
She already has the experience of having escorted two D12 victors on the year of their win, and through the Victory Tour...she isn't being cheated out of that. I don't believe this plays a role with her. Certainly the prep trio, who had to be minimized and unnamed in the movies, were disappointed to lose out on future "Katniss & Peeta" things for their own sakes, but with Effie I believe it's all about them.

I was really gutted that they didn’t explain how Haymitch won in the films. Luckily it’s explained in the books. In Haymitch’s games, the arena was a Poison Paradise and there were 48 tributes instead of 24 because it was the second Quarter Quell. Pretty much everything except for a few things the Capitol provided in the arena was toxic so a lot of the tributes died from dehydration or starvation. Haymitch won by pretty much dodging and hiding from all the tributes so he wouldn’t have to fight anyone until he found a forcefield at the edge of the arena which caused things to bounce off of it and back up to the tribute if they dropped things at the forcefield. So Haymitch decided to use it as a weapon for when the only other tribute left (a girl from district 1), found him, and they started fighting and she cut open his stomach with an axe, so he led her to the forcefield where she threw her axe at Haymitch, and the axe bounced back up off the forcefield and lodged in her head, killing her. That’s how Haymitch won. Obviously the Capitol wasn’t happy that Haymitch outsmarted them by using the forcefield as a weapon, so two weeks after Haymitch won the games, the Capitol had Haymitch’s mother, younger brother, and girlfriend killed as a punishment.

i’ve always loved this scene because to me it seems like the very first time Effie sees the horrors and terrible things the capital/President Snow is capable of. she never cares before but after the 74th games she really got to meet the kids and people that are affected. and this scene does a great job of showing her newly found resentment towards the capitol as well as her sadness and anger for the victors.
