She never had to really bond with the other kids prior. To her, they were just uncivilized kids getting the gift of luxury before inevitably dying. She loves these two because they’re a unit far longer. Not to mention this Quell was just objectively horrible even to the Capitol citizens saying goodbye to their reality stars.

You can tell she was for a split second relieved that Peeta volunteered. But than it turns to sadness because although she won’t be losing someone she clearly has feelings for in haymitch she’s just gonna lose another person she cares about.

Not only that, but her character is so underrated, she could've been way more developed as a character, in Mockingjay she was tortured and it was never really delved into (for obvious reasons) but it seems like such a waste, she was basically useless to either side, the Capitol wanted information that she couldn't give, and the rebels obviously didn't trust her, it was just such a waste of a good character!

Effie is, in my view, the most interesting and wonderful character. She was NEVER mere comic relief, never unimportant--and it was a shame that we got so little follow-up on her in Mockingjay. (The movies essentially fixed that, but left out the torture bit, which is pretty danged significant.) I never found any reason to see her as anything but selfless, and my appreciation of her depth goes so, so much further than "She was a silly heartless Capitol goon who suddenly became a good person thanks to almighty Katniss Everdeen." Gah, no.

2:02 The significance of Mrs. Everdeen being the one to start the salute and not Prim is huge, Prim is immune, everyone loves Prim, but Mrs. Everdeen has and will always be an option to be targeted by the capitol and knowing that she's lost her husband and her best friend to the Games, and now she has to face the reality that her daughter will also be a tribute for the 2nd time in a row, risks it all to thank her for everything she's done for Prim while she was too depressed to do anything.
@themisheika
@themisheika Жыл бұрын
Prim is not immune though? She's only 13, and if the Hunger Games had persisted, she'd have 5 more chances of being reaped, and it's long suspected that family members of Victors have a disproportionately higher chance of getting reaped as a method of controlling the Victors. Katniss, even if she did survive the Quarter Quell, can't even volunteer as Tribute by that point in place of Prim as she'd be too old to qualify.

@@themisheikaImmune as in she's too significant of a public figure since she's a key figure/driving force on Katniss' dramatic story that the masses are invested in. Everyone knows the story of "Katniss volunteered to protect her sister, Primrose" but their mom isn't well known. If the capitol killed Prim off, it would enrage both the citizens of the capitol (who are invested in Katniss' story as their entertainment) and the districts who see Prim as like, a catalyst for Katniss' rebellion

If you read the book, she always complained about being assigned to District 12 and hoped to move to District 1 or 2. She never really cared for those tributes because she'd only know them for a week before they died. Katniss and Peeta, being winners, showed her that they're more than just "tributes"; they're people, so naturally she grew to know them (also doesn't hurt that she got part of the attention as well). Her relationship with Haymitch also improved: Katniss was the one who "sobered" him up; in the meantime, he was a drunk who also didn't care much for the tributes. But I agree: they did an excellent job of showing how Effie grew from a snob to an actual human being. And even though she should have been imprisoned in Mockingjay, I like that they took liberty and showed her in District 13 without her flamboyant looks.

Katniss's mom went blank on Prim and Katniss after her husband died, and throughout the first movie I kind of saw that in her personality and the way she acted. But in this, she raises her three fingers and she looks so defiant it makes me think that seeing Katniss in the Games and seeing her being Reaped again jolted her out of that and made her realize how angry she is towards the Capitol. Well played, Francis Lawrence. I thought it was a great touch.

+Abby Beck Hmm. I sort of just realized that there was something up with the mother (well I noticed this the first time, but it was more apparent after the 2nd watch). I remember feeling a bit teed-off how it seemed the protagonist effectively did the female equivalent of emasculating her mother with regard to telling her to look after her sister. I could have bought that if say her mother had drank too much, or periodically just becomes completely listless, but I still don't think they did such a great job convincing the audience that there was really something wrong with the main character's mother (I remember only one scene really that hinted this and it lasted maybe15 seconds at best).

She was never aware that both Katniss and Peeta had been negotiating with Haymitch to save each other. While Katniss counted on Haymitch to save Peeta, Haymitch knew he could do nothing for Peeta if he was reaped instead, because Peeta wanted to be the one to protect Katniss. Both men were planning to volunteer for each other... In a way, all three were ready to die to save at least one other person, although Haymitch was never in that to-rescue list he was still up for it. Effie's is a sigh of relief, because she was more attached to young, more innocent Peeta than Haymitch at the time. That's why her relief was quickly shifted to grief. Still, the show had to go on.

Somewhere in Mockingjay part 2 it deviates from the books and they share a kiss. They did the same with Glimmer and Cato for the films, too. They didn't seem to have a relationship, just flirting. asia w ok, I'm about to fangirl. I'm on Team PEETA, however I think Katniss is perfectly capable of accomplishing things on her own. But I imagine it would be super cute, (and very sad) watching Peeta try and fail to save the girl he loves. All Peeta has ever done was try to save Katniss, and when he can't, I imagine that would be his breaking point. I imagine Haymitch keeping Katniss alive and killing himself in the end, so that Katniss may return to Peeta, and they would be back together again. However, the rest of the story would be totally different, and ya you get the point. But maybe Prim wouldn't die? Idk, sorry for wasting your time if anyone stopped to read this. It didn't take me until this point to love Effie. From her introduction I recognized her super-smiley, seemingly over-excited, excessively cheery & bubbly & bouncy facade as a forced but necessary act (one that would inevitably start to crack sooner or later.) She's a mere cog in the system, and there's not a thing she can do to stop it. All she can do is try her very best on behalf of her district and its tributes, which she does. I never disliked her. Making assumptions was all too easy; right away in the book, Katniss talks to you about this lady as if she knows her personally and/or can read her mind. But I didn't let the narrator dictate what I thought of other people. The more she hammered me with "You should hate this person," the more I saw that there was no actual reason to. I've never seen Effie's development as a simple "Oh, the oblivious dolt who loved child-murder was suddenly, miraculously changed when these two magically super-special people came along." I always gave her a great deal more credit than that. I saw it more like them unwittingly helping her to start overcoming the fear of her true self--beginning to trust and embrace it more, as opposed to continually repressing and rejecting it in favor of what her culture pressures her to be. Accepting that it's possible for those around her to be the ones who are wrong. That compassion is not weakness. Butterflies are symbols of metamorphosis and transformation. They begin life in one form...they enter a tight, confining, restrictive cocoon inside which they begin to undergo subtle and then dramatic changes...ultimately emerging in a new, freer and more empowered form. This seems fitting. It isn't a matter of her not "having the guts" to stand up to the Capitol (indeed, she's more honest when the risk is only to herself); it's the fact that that would do less than no good. She can't change the way things are, or doesn't believe she can. It could only create a mess of trouble and put others in danger. She feels alone and helpless and, in her home, pretty much is. And this is why she's my favorite. The movies did not change her or "humanize" her; it's there all along if you bother to read between the lines and think, consider the subtext.

I love this scene because it shows the sympathy people in the Capitol have for the other districts. Yes, they have no fear of hunger or having no shelter but they themselves were victims of tyranny as well. In the books you see so many Capitol citizens who sympathized the districts. They knew it was wrong but if they said anything they too would become victims (just look at what happened to Katniss' stylists). So, in this scene you see that break in Effie's mask. She chose this job for a reason: to help these kids survive. And finally after all her years of working she finally has not one but two victors that she and Haymitch were able to assist in getting them out of the games only to have them meet a certain death a year later. To finally have success only for it to be taken away must be absolutely devastating and you can see at this moment she is done with the Games.

She already has the experience of having escorted two D12 victors on the year of their win, and through the Victory Tour...she isn't being cheated out of that. I was really gutted that they didn’t explain how Haymitch won in the films. Luckily it’s explained in the books. In Haymitch’s games, the arena was a Poison Paradise and there were 48 tributes instead of 24 because it was the second Quarter Quell. Pretty much everything except for a few things the Capitol provided in the arena was toxic so a lot of the tributes died from dehydration or starvation. Haymitch won by pretty much dodging and hiding from all the tributes so he wouldn’t have to fight anyone until he found a forcefield at the edge of the arena which caused things to bounce off of it and back up to the tribute if they dropped things at the forcefield. So Haymitch decided to use it as a weapon for when the only other tribute left (a girl from district 1), found him, and they started fighting and she cut open his stomach with an axe, so he led her to the forcefield where she threw her axe at Haymitch, and the axe bounced back up off the forcefield and lodged in her head, killing her. That’s how Haymitch won. Obviously the Capitol wasn’t happy that Haymitch outsmarted them by using the forcefield as a weapon, so two weeks after Haymitch won the games, the Capitol had Haymitch’s mother, younger brother, and girlfriend killed as a punishment.

The sound of Prims voice when Katniss is being taken, breaks me every time! So sweet they still have a loving sister relationship even with everything that has happened to them. These characters will always live in our hearts

As tragic as this scene is, I can’t help but just appreciate the acting of Elizabeth Banks in this clip.

Props to Elizabeth Banks for portraying Effie very well. She deserved an award for her portrayal.

This scene is so devastating to me. You can see how absolutely wrecked Effie is. Even she can see how deeply unfair this all is, how crushing it is to see your champions forced back into these unjust games. And you can see it's killing her to have to announce these names.

Effie was relieved when she read Haymitch name and then how sad she is when Peeta volunteered.

Fun little detail. She's dressed in butterflies here, symbolizing her change and growth from the last time she preformed this duty.

Having now seen songbirds and snakes: Could you imagine if the scene played out With katness's name being called,a moment of silence, Then you start hearing the soft strumming of a guitar , the crowd parts, and eighty something year old lucy gray Slowly makes her way to the stage while Singing a song that's absolutely roasting snow, Exposing extremely intimate and personal details about what they went through together, and the last line Is punctuated by her volunteering in katnesses place 😂

Effie hates her job. It shows so much on her face and in her voice when she says Katniss' name. So heartbreaking because she's such a sweet lady as well

The way Effie sighs when she says Haymitch's name. I wonder if it was relief or fear. I wonder if she knew Peeta would volunteer for Haymitch, so she was like "Oh, no..." Or if she thought Haymitch was actually going to be the tribute, and was like "Oh, thank god... at least Peeta is safe." Either way, I love how you can interpret it either way. And it shows how much love she has for those three, and how far she has come from her first scene. This is actually one of my favourite scenes.

Can we just appreciate the fact everyone's in something kinda formal (even Haymitch is wearing a blazer) then there's Peeta in jeans, jacket and top. Like he really doesn't give anything at this point 😂

That butterfly dress is truly something magical. It not only is a beautiful creation, but the choice to use it to reflect Effie’s growth is brilliant. Alexander McQueen is a wonder.

The way Effie says “and now for the men” reads as “I can now see through caring for these two people how absolutely awful these games are, and suddenly the humanity of the tributes is unshakably real.
