The first of two recordings Jacques Thibaud and Alfred Cortot made of the Franck, the second in 1929. I like this version better (I think) despite the recording quality which doesn't affect the violin sound very much but diminishes the quality of sound from the piano when Cortot is playing large chords. These two friends have a special affinity for this work, one of Franck's greatest compositions.

One of my favourite chamber music works ever, one of my favourite pianists, one of my favourite violinists... What could go wrong? :D This is is one of the recordings that I enjoy more and more every time I listen to it.

The Frank Sonata is definitely one of my favorites as well. All the movements are wonderful. I was in a rehab hospital as an inpatient for 3 months. For several weeks I couldn't really sleep and I would listen to the last movement as the sun came up every day. They recorded this Sonata a few years later in the electric era. I had not heard the acoustic version until soon before I uploaded it. This version is better overall and Cortot is cleaner on his last run. Thank you for listening.

What is interesting about these seemingly, hopelessly, ancient fidelity recordings is what IS preserved: a semblance of the dynamics, but definitely the time, the temporal shaping.. Thanks for this.

Lousy sound, maybe, but a truly great performance. This one and the one from 1929 are my all-time favorite recordings of the Sonata. Thanks so much for posting it. ☺

I've never heard Franck Sonata played more beautifully. Thank you for posting it. And a question: Does anybody know what violin Thibaud played on?

Thibaud played on a 1720 Stradivarius. Remember that Cortot played piano on both of their recordings. The piano part is, as it is with almost every sonata, from more difficult to much harder than the violin part.

@@2ndviolinist yeah the best violin sonatas are Porpora he uses the violin to the ultimate ... after Beethoven most composrrs were better pianists than violinists!

Je crois qu' aujourd'hui c'est justement le style et les sonorités individuelles qui sont absentes. Couleurs, l' usage de multiple gammes de vibrato, articulation, tecnique d'archet... Les violonistes aujourd'hui sauf quelques exceptions sont des clones.
