I really like the scene in my head, where the field sugeon patches up a wounded soldier and after the surgery there is just extra limb or head left over. After every 5 operations, they have the necessary parts to patch up a new guy, give him gear and weapons from the 100% salvaged loot and send him at the front.

the thing about attacking forts, is usually the enemy is in the forts. This breaks all concealment and your guns reduce that cover to atoms. That means attacking forts is advantageous because it is no longer a guerilla war.
