Thief is a stealth video game developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix. It is a revival of the cult classic Thief series of stealth games, of which it is the fourth game. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms on February 25, 2014 in North America, on February 27, 2014 in Australia and February 28, 2014 in Europe.
Players control Garrett, a master thief, as he intends to steal from the rich. Similar to previous games in the series, players must use stealth in order to overcome challenges, while violence is left as a minimally effective last resort.
Gameplay is choice-driven, with players having a number of possible paths and approaches in a given level. Players may use the environment to their advantage, as well as pickpocket characters. As Garrett attempts to steal in levels, guards and other non-player characters (if they are aware of his presence) will try to flush him out and kill him. Different NPCs may use different means to find him, and the game's artificial intelligence will be aware of the level design, and therefore, know of potential hiding spots.
Players may enter a "Focus" mode, which provides several advantages. It enhances Garrett's vision, highlighting pipes that can be climbed, or candles that can be put out to make the area darker. Focus can also slow down time, so that Garrett is able to steal more effectively while pickpocketing. Garrett can also use Focus to push enemies or perform debilitating attacks. It can be further upgraded over the course of the game.
Garrett carries a blackjack, used to knock guards unconscious; a collapsible, compound bow, which can be used for both combat and non-lethal purposes such as distracting guards; and a claw, which can be used to grapple. Players may use money to purchase supplies and equipment at the end of missions.
An EXP system for the in-game growth of the character was meant to be used in the final game, but was later scrapped due to negative fan feedback, and to reflect the fact that the character was already an experienced thief.

I think it’s perfectly valid, or even warranted, to compare reboots to the originals. They picked the IP for a reason, so it’s important to hold it to its own standards, even when the motivation for picking it is money and profit. If Thief was a gears of war style third person shooter set in the future, people wouldn’t say “Dont judge it on its predessors.” Studios should be taking the opportunity to expand on the gameplay of previous titles using modern day tech, not boiling away the complexities of the characters and mechanics to sell a gray mush to everyone. Thief 2014 has plenty of flaws in its own right, but the reason people compare it to the old ones is because that is its greatest flaw. How can it be so bland and tedious compared to titles from 20 years ago? I wish publishers would take a hint and realize bastardizing old IPs will result in a game that appeals neither to the original fans or potential new customers.

Yeah this was my first introduction to the Thief series like 7 years ago on the Xbox unfortunately. And for it's time, I thought that it was the shit but after watching Gman's review on the first two, I decided to pick up the 2nd game and realized how much better it was in literally every aspect of it's gameplay and styled compared to the reboot lol.

Biggest gripe I have with the game is that it completely takes the feeling of _freedom_ from Garrett's movement. You're stuck looking for that R2 prompt to climb onto the ledge or the X prompt to pickpocket someone, wich sometimes just doesn't show up and it ends with you bumping into a guard and failing a mission because of it. I don't mind the changes to different surfaces having to difference to the noise you make unless you run, though. It always felt awkward as hell that a "super thief" wore such noisy shoes when going into a heist. And while they're not that great, I do enjoy the nods to the classic Thief games with the ruined Keeper Library under the House of Blossoms and Lady Moira(T3)'s Asylum.

@@isimioyekunlemarktaiwo3643 look at dishonored, that game is obviously inspired by thief but with superpowers, that game has combat and it works in favor of the game, if you fail to play stealthy, you have to engage in combat or reset to the last checkpoint, you get the bad ending if you kill too much so the game basically asks you to be more stealthy. Hitman and Splinter Cell let you go in guns blazing (9/10 times doing that is suicide), and as a result you get a low rank, point is its always good to have a choice between stealth and combat

They took everything Dishonored did... Apart from quality and the freedom to carry out the job however you wanted. In Dishonored, you have complete freedom and a multitude of ways to carve your own path leading up to your target, executing the target and leaving the scene. On Thief, however, it never feels like you're carving your own path, but finding somebody else's path and following it.

I agree to all your critcal points, *except* the one about the _lenghty animations_. Sure, they slow you down heavily, especially in its amount of loot to steal it might get annoying, but all those animations give you the most real body-feeling any Firts Person-Game has ever had for me. You can see your body when looking down, there are no doors closed by ghosts etc. And I think the animations are splendid and really fluid; they give weight to your stealing. If the objects would just magically disappear from the desk and reappear in your pocket whilst your hands did nothing, it just seems ridiculous, just as the horrid slap on the guards heads in the previous Thief-games - how would anyone ever get unconscious by that?!

From what I gather a compromise between the two extremes would be the ideal solution. Speed up the animations a little bit or make the hand shoot out towards the object you're interacting with without it taking too long. It might also give a sense of Garret being a more experienced thief, able to quickly stow things in his pockets or recognize valuable items.
@masterexploder9668
@masterexploder9668 6 жыл бұрын
Stealing animation are indeed fine, but they just start to drag out when you pick up every possible thing worth 10 coins or something. Would be easier if there was less to steal but it was more important, instead of being small time thief and taking every possible thing. You could now ask the question: where Garett can stuff all of this?
@theeternal2734
@theeternal2734 4 жыл бұрын
Realism isn't the point in stealing or takedowns, it's for convenience so it doesn't drag on the experience into stopping you every 5 seconds, picking up loot or knocking a guy out . Plus if someone whacked you in the back of the head with a blackjack which is essentially a club, you'd be knocked out

it seems cool for the first couple of mins or hours but when you play the game more the same animation plays and it gets boring and annoying, in thief 1, 2, and 3 you point you click, done! now go steal other stuff. You don't always need arms and legs to be immersed, take Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon ( 2001 ) as an example.

Things I miss in this game: free movement in all directions (jumping, mantling, rope arrows attachable to everything made of wood), getting lost in a ginormous levels, sandbox feeling in almost every mission, emphasis on sound design, ability to blast the door with my sword, supernatural creatures, tools that existed just for lols (oil flask+fire arrow combo?), very stylish animated cutscenes, hand-drawn maps, distinct factions. And also colors other than grey-blue palette.

Its simply the most beautiful and immersive game I played for years. Graphics are incredible, not only technicaly but in terms of art design its an exeptionnal victorian setting. The no HUD option is just perfect you have all the feedback in game necessay to deal with, like the shaking fingers while lockpicking etc, Difficulty is quite good you really feel they work on it. Okay the level design is not comparable to a game like thief to but they are more vibrant more conssistant and organics, the game at release date was not even able to deal with what it offers then imagine with seamless maps like in thief 2 with 3d setting like nowdays... A great game.

I guess I shouldn't be terribly surprised however...Looking Glass Studios were in a class of their own. It's really annoying that an amazing developer like that had to close their doors while EA is still alive and well after all this time when all they do is re-release the same shit every year.

I think seeing garret reaching out to grab loot and so on is pretty sweet it makes it all fell verynbelievable and i havent seen many games doing it. It seems like the only bad animation that i disagree in every game that has this is the third person view cause that just puts out of the moment and this game does almost everything in fps mode and looks distracting (even if good looking) when garret switches to tp mode while climbing and so on.

The problem with this is narrative, because while the narrative is painful I still loved The City Hub ( sneaky murder of guard patrolls) and I liked Garret. My main problem is that it started as a sequel ( hence erin) to Thief 3 and then they were like " No,no,no, let's make this a reboot". And it ended up being 2 stories crudley stiched together and it freakin' shows. ( As someone who writes as a hobby it is especially visible). In the original script Garrett was supposed to suffer from amnesia and I guess the plot was retracing your steps to the very beginning. It would explain his comment about Keepers' ruined library " I feel like I was here before". In other words they half-assed the story. You can't have the cake and eat it. Either you do a sequel or a reboot. Make up your goddamn mind or you will end up with something like thief 2014 "plot".

I rented this so I can't really say I beat the game and seen the horrible story, but I feel like a lot of these complaints were a bit off to me. I suppose I can see why someone would hate these aspects, but... I dunno I'm left scratching my head and thinking they shouldn't be a big problem. The combat is bad, but then again I recall the same for what I've played of thief 1 and in both cases that was a good thing because combat was not supposed to be the enjoyable aspect. I actually didn't get much of a chance to experience it during the main new game because I played it with forced stealth, however I got into some fights during the challenge mode and it was just as clunky and punishing as it should have been. For animations I can see that being something to love or hate. Animations are supposed to be there as extra immersion and to give it a more modern aesthetic rather than a floaty interaction. However I can see it getting annoying to some people, and even though I liked it myself I got into a glitch where my character stuck to the animation and I had to reload a save.... just terrible. Takedowns are more annoying than the older thief way, however its not that terrible as a whole and we've been doing this a lot lately from Farcry 3 and many other such games. A melee animation was even introduced to Ghosts and was actually an improvement considering all the knife balance complaints of the past. Its just kind of become natural and I don't think Thief is an exception of this just being a decent standard animation. At the end of the day I can see Thief has its share of problems, but I wouldn't say these are the problems I had with it. My biggest complaints lie within the streamlining to make things simple like how lean was attached to the same button as interaction making it a game damaging tie in when you want to swoop in a grab some loot off a crate but get glued to it and spotted instead. However I adore the game as a stealth focused game, I felt it wore the name well compared to the typical reboots and modernized games, and above all it was awesome to see the customization and how it had a meta-game sort of score attack system built to add replay to what was already a solid stealth game. I got to play it without focus and with forced stealth which really intensified the solid stealth mechanics and I enjoyed what little I got to play out of the game from this perspective.

The combat still doesn’t need to be horrible. Making Garrett weak is enough, but making the combat outright bad just sucks. The animations are annoying. Stealing stuff is the main point of the game, and the hand animations make the main point of the game a real chore. And the animations don’t add anything to the “immersion”; at least this argument falls flat on its face because the game regularly switches to 3rd person perspective, which takes you out of the immersion all the time. Bop someone over his head... watch a 3rd person takedown animation. There is no immersion in that.

A small change that I think could game made stealing much better (and helped solved the long animations issue): limited storage space. Rather than just taking stuff and converting it to gold, you see the value of it and decide if it's worth the added space/weight. Most small things would be practically worthless, but stealing chalices, jewelry, art, etc. would give significantly better value for its size. You should be able to see what you've collected in your inventory and drop things you don't want to make more space for better loot. It would have helped make players actually THINK about what they want to pick up versus what they should leave behind. Increase the value of better loot to balance everything out, have the player sell it at black market merchants in exchange for gold, and then continue with the upgrade system as it is. All this would allow for that immersive aspect of physically grabbing each item while also significantly reducing the time players waste doing so.

Plus the challenging difficulty options, where you can change to where you have no hud, if you get spotted once then you have to restart the game, etc. I thought that was a cool edition. And while the story wasn't the best, I still enjoyed it for what it is. I agree with your review for the most part, and you brought up valid points, but I still think this game is amazing, now is it good, no, that's why I agree with the reviews it was given (3.5 /5) but will I recommend it to someone, absolutely.

Loved this game so much I played it on the Xbox One twice,once on normal then on hard. I then bought it for my PS4 and did the same as before on my Xbox One. Now I'm playing it again on my PS3, I've got a severely broken leg and crushed ankle so I've been bed ridden for a while so I hooked up my PS3 in my bed room and played through some of my older games, then saw Thief for PS3 for sale on Amazon for 10 bucks and I thought why not, let's do this again and I'm loving my time with the game all over again, also the game looks surprisingly good on the PS3

Do you think that a new Thief, more like the originals, even can exist anymore, or is such gameplay antiquated to the point that it has to be dolled up in flashy animations or at least streamlined for elegant simplicity, rather than everything being gritty and in the player's control?

It is ridiculous how they just scatter loot everywhere. In the old games, there was like one or two pieces of loot per room, and it was a lot more valuble. Also they should have just given him an 1/8 of a second "snatch" animation for grabbing loot, rather than that slow grab that he does. That would be not as annoying and would really give you the sense of him being a master thief.

I want a Thief 5 that continues from Thief: Deadly Shadows, where it focuses on an older Garrett(with a beard!) and his new female apprentice who is faster but more vulnerable, while Garrett is slower but stronger and has the ability to zoom in and out. Also can we have Constantine's sword return and have a few Mechanist Haunts appear?

I'm happy to see someone covering this game in a fairly positive view. However I personally didn't like it specifically because of the sound design. I was introduced to this series only a few months ago and have now played most of the first 2 thief games, deadly shadows and the 2014 game on release when it had come out. Looking back to the old games, the use of footsteps ( or any other prominent noise like moans of an undead, chat between people, things moving, etc) were a huge part of the overall stealth, and that's missing from so much of the new game. Hearing where the two guards are walking in the hallway to what monster could be around a corner, it felt immersive and its puts you in a mindset that you have to focus on the sound in order to survive. I don't want to come off as a purist because this game isn't completely awful on its own, but as a reboot and a return to the series, it would've been great to see the immersive sound design throughout the game play like how the old ones were able to do. Its weird to come back to a game that I mostly enjoyed on release, and after playing the original that came out the year after I was born, only to have loved the experience of playing it much more and to feel as though the triple A game from a decade plus later failed to surpass it on something it should've been able to do much more faithfully. A great review, though, Ive really been enjoying your stuff content recently

Played both the xbox and ps versions of this travesty, and the sound in those is just broken. People talking inside a house sound like they are next to you, and apparently Garrett hears with his eyes, because if you turn you back to certain people talking their voices drop like they were behind a wall. Also, most of the "thieving" is from empty houses making it play like Pac-Man without the ghosts. That said, this was apparently a dream project for the developers, but quite a few people left the project in frustration with Square. Such a shame.

i agreed with the review. i felt the same way playing this game, it fell short of the potential it could have been. to me the wurst aspect of the game was the fact that there was no Jump. every leap/hurdle/crawl/feat of dexterity was auto scripted/animated. there was no skill involved and left no challenges for the player to overcome. i also hated the fact that the game really didn't reward you for exploring, like leaving clever secrets. where as in the fist 3 games, some secrets where discovered in the lore you could find throughout the game (Books, Letters etc). because of these two facts, the entire game felt like it was on rails for me, it might as well have been a movie since i had the distinct feeling i was never really playing the character. i got through about 3 quarters of the game and called it quit, it just failed at being a fun and engaging experience and more like a chore.

About combat difficulties - well, what martial prowess do you expect from a thief? Being stealthy and avoiding enemies has always been your best bet while playing as thieves in almost any game that got it right.

Picked this up a short while back. Ragequit the game twice. The first time I picked slowed movement and the game over when taking damage traits for custom difficulty (among other things) which ended up making the poison gas section in Chapter 4 basically impossible (or at least so unreasonably difficult I couldn't do it). The second time I started a new game and was skipping cutscenes, which somehow caused a glitch where I didn't get the claw when I was supposed to. Leaving me stuck and unable to advance any further from Chapter 1. gg 10/10 game design.

So wait: Garret has a blackjack which is suppose to be used for silently, and quickly, knocking people out... And he's using it as a barbarian child's club? Meanwhile he's doing long-ass cutscenes to try and take down opponents with his bare hands, and the enemies are also screaming in the process of all this which logically should attract more enemies, defeating the purpose assuming the others can hear. Now this is just silly, even if one wishes to make the argument this game shouldn't be compared to the predecessors.

you know given how much animation is taking over actions and combat maybe some of these issues could have been alleviated by having an upgrade very early on to boost the speed at which garret can get business done. Or have an upgrade that allows slow and quiet or fast and sloppy. Because requesting for just doing the action without feedback other than an item disappearing or something changing isn't going to happen. This studio has it hard for this kind of gameplay feedback and they won't be changing unless their fan base dumps on one of their titles for that reason.

The game has several bad aspects, but also some good. Btw, you wanna knock a guard without killing: Not Q, but R and once the guard goes down Q instead of continuing to strike with R (kill). If you need it for the sissies, not the predators. Chapter one is more fun than it seems, but one has to scout the city and learn to find the hold E spots to move wood. Secret shared: You don't need the WRENCH for the first 4 Basso missions. Just, if you walk wrongly, then you will feel something must be missing. ``Let us not be Taffers about it, and hope for a remake no longer dominated by Geralt erhh Garrett!´´

Really good review but I disagree about the sound design being polished. There are times where I think guards are having conversations right near me but it turns out they were quite a ways away from me. And vice versa. And it's quite inconsistent. And it seems like at times some of the music is used inappropriately. They would play an intense piece that made me think I might've been spotted or something intense was happening but no. Other than that, I agree with the rest.

I'm not a fan of first-person animations that lock the player into actions i.e. climbing and picking up objects, attacking enemies etc. In third-person games it's almost a necessary evil, but in first-person games it's really the opposite. I don't need to see my character's hands climbing a ladder - just have the camera quickly going up the ladder and let my brain fill in the blanks. Not counting cutscenes and takedowns, Dishonored is quite a good, recent example of first-person animations done right in my opinion.

Totally agree with the "too much loot" problem. A real chore. I only played a few hours. I felt there was no real choice about how to move through the level. I also don't like ultra violence, and it was all about that rough kill. The original games had more humor in them. They needed Dan Thron & Terri Brosius, and the rest of the story gang, to come up with some awesome stuff. It'll be interesting to see what Embracer Group do with the Thief IP.

In earlier games I had to wait for the targets to wobble, whimper and sloooooooooowly fall to the ground : i.e. they too have to run through a full animation before they can be picked up and stashed out of sight. I agree about the quantity vs quality of loot, however, and the story is bollocks.

The thing I don't see and the reviews of this game seem to focus on the technical move aspect (like the stealth aspect). Here is what actually matters; How stupid is the AI? In this game, the AI seems spotty. Part of how 'master' thief you are the more smart the AI should be. Also where are the supernatural aspects: zombies, and the other supernatural elements is what made Thief (the originals) so cool. So if this game doesn't have them it really does suffer. So far I have not seen anything like that. What the main villain is something weird. I mean the magical aspect to the game, is vital, and so if it doesn't appear to be there. That is a huge massive 'no good' for me.

If you want it to look better graphically, install the HD 1.2 mod as well.
