Thief tries to sell stolen iPhone5S back to owner and gets caught

My friends got their phone and wallets stolen from their shop's front office while they were working in the back, the iPhone was immediately reported and it locked itself useless and on the screen it said "Lost/Stolen Phone, please call this number xxx-xxx-xxxx"
This guy called her after not being able to unlock the phone and asked her for $200 to give her the phone back, so she called the cops and gave them the number where he called from. The police called him but there was nothing they could do, he called her all angry because she called the cops and told her he won't return the phone.
A week later he called her again and told her to meet her inside a grocery store by herself and to bring him the $200.
We got there earlier and we had his description that he gave her so she could tell it was him. Then she sat by herself while we were watching in the back and the thief suddenly showed up, she got her phone back and that's when we jumped in and confronted him so he wouldn't try anything stupid, as we told him to leave he kept arguing that he bought the phone from his friend which makes no sense... Who buys a phone that says "Lost Phone please return" on the screen and you can't use it because it's locked? Of course he knew it was stolen or he was the guy who stole the phone. But he was stupid enough to try to make money from returning the phone. He even thought of calling the cops on himself, but as you can see he is just a dumb thief who thought could make himself a quick buck.
After the video he kept sending her threatening texts, saying he was going to find them and he was going to make them pay. But it is all on record and it was all sent to the police together with this video as evidence in case he tries to do something stupid in the future.

Ashton Evalu I disliked this video, not because I'm a criminal, I'm 17 years of age. I disliked this video because of the editing of this video. What he did was right, retrieving the phone and that was it. But why in fucks name did they have to keep on slandering him after they retrieved the phone. And maybe the guy did buy the stolen phone off a scumbag of a friend, you have no idea (yes I'm well aware that it says lost phone, but people like these take your money off you before they sell you it just like every other shop in existence, it's not personal, it's just business). Now in my opinion I do believe that the man did steal the phone, however, I feel that the person recording and editing this was equally in the wrong for not dropping the situation after winning, this is what I like to believe as overkill and being a sore winner. You should've took the phone and left, staying and slandering the man after retrieving the phone was extremely unessasary given the fact that the thief was trying to leave the area but you kept on following him to slander him. What that James guy did wasn't wrong at all (now I didn't hear him say anything) but he seemed to look the tallest and the strongest in that group and what he was doing was defending his friends incase the thief would attack them, in my opinion there's nothing wrong with that, he was just there protecting his friends, he wasn't provoking the thief or looking to cause trouble, he was just defending. However, for the cameraman and editor, shame on you for continuously slandering the man after winning the fight. All you were doing was looking to fight and therefore I would place you just as low as the thief was

Damn guys... im sorry but im on the other side of the story, i bought an iphone i few days ago, an iphone 6s, but it was working perfectly when i tested it and everything, and it was all fine, the seller lied about the iCloud account it had inside, he said it was his aunts, but obviously it wasn't, as soon as i connected to a wifi i got the find my iphone notification, (i know i was dumb i didn't test that earlier, that was my mistake) so i contacted the owner and gladly gave her the phone back, at least felt amazing knowing i did such a blessing to someone, giving back an stolen phone, even buying it from the robber to give it back, it felt good... but i didn't ask for money... you have nooo... idea how horrible i feel knowing i lost 500 dollars just like that, im trying to contact the guy who sold it to me, but still on it.. wish me luck guys, and i really hope this guy is not in the same situation as me unfortunately.. :( try to think it this way next time you watch the video.

+Armond Nero I might have an answer to that, theoretical of course: the wallets had little to no value and either had no money or anything else of major value that couldn't be replaced. In all likelihood, they were inexpensive and they probably canceled any credit/bank cards and got reissued licences quickly. Asking him to give any of that back would be a waste because the contents would be thrown away and all floating cash would be nearly unidentifiable.

His buddy was probably there and they had eyes on each other using hand signals, or communication via ear piece. He sticks his hand in his pocket right as you walk up. A very peculiar time to leave yourself with only one hand to defend yourself. When you are surrounded and he can't get close to you, he backs off. Then comes back once you are more in the open. Had you had a different camera, you may have found yourself with a dead camera and no video. Another reason you should have called the police before meeting with him.

Im not sure of how it becomes useless as they mentioned but with most of tracking app it can wipe of data before being exploited, lock the phone, sound the alarm and of course tracking. As for the number probably its from the wallpaper. Not sure but i do that for my phone in case it wasnt being stole but lost and someone found it they can call my emergency number right from the wallpaper. Not sure what they use though. Oh and i also believe and assume they still let the internet or the gps on in order for the app to work. Its the basic thing need for something like this unless it can be triggered by a call or text message like how you block your credit card but then again something is required be it internet since its in the system.

I honestly see no reason to automatically assume that this guy is the thief. He had possession of stolen property, yes, but his story does actually hold up as a cause for reasonable doubt. A "friend" of his could have sold it for $200 to him, only for him to find out about the thief lock app whereupon he called the listed return number. Having just been scammed out of two hundred bucks, it's not entirely unreasonable to want to recuperate his losses. It's not FULLY reasonable to do what he did, but there is at least some level of reasoning behind it. Given his apparel and speech pattern, he most likely isn't educated enough to fully understand why this was a bad idea. Was what he did totally wrong? Was the owner of the phone in the right for threatening him with police involvement? Maybe he's just a thief coming up with excuses. I don't know, and neither do you. Either way, pushing your own narrative when there is more than one possibility from the evidence in this way isn't really right.

You don't quite seem to understand how things go with the down-and-out. The phone gets shown while turned off, money and item exchange hands, then the man in the video finds out it's stolen AFTER receiving it. Then he either tries to get his money back from his friend or calls up the number on the app. Look at the guy's clothes, his mannerisms, in the wrong or not he's either homeless or a druggie. Possibly both, but as long as his story holds up, two hundred dollars is a massive, *MASSIVE* amount of cash for someone like that. If he was willing to spend that on a phone, then that should show that he's trying to get out of that kind of life. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to do that? A working phone is a massive step in the right direction, but nearly impossible to obtain when in poverty. And yes, I do realize I'm making a ton of assertions and pushing a narrative. Wanna know why? Because I'm proving a point. That point is that these possibilities are all valid, all of the possibilities that YOU come up with are equally valid, NONE OF US CAN KNOW FOR SURE!

Like seriously, if you have a video-feed of the incident, that constitutes as irrefutable evidence. Whereas, had you not had evidence, it's all hear-say. It's the same thing when driving with a car dash-cam. If someone hits you and runs off, you can take that to a local precinct, file a claim, they'll investigate and track the car (e.g. license plate, vin number, etc) and charge the individual for a felony. Shoot dude I'm in VA and my friend had her phone stole by a restaurant staff crew. When she located the phone (at it's last location when it was powered on), I memorized the cross streets, typed it up on google maps, and identified what house the phone was stored in. Once we confirmed the GEOINT (e.g. Geospatial Intelligence), we got the warrant. And once the warrant was produced, they raided the house, and found her phone on the 2nd floor bathroom in a 5bd 3ba SFR (e.g. Single Family Residence). PS. Good job helping your friend as I would have suspected he would have tried to play her by robbing her afterwards. #HatsOffToYouMyFriend ;-)

Some of those sites do care but there is sometimes not a lot they can do. If your phone is stolen you can report its iemi # or serial number to your carrier and there are sites too. When I have bought 2nd hand devices I have asked for those# to check those sites to see if they were lost or stolen. Any hesitation of the seller to share it and I move on.

I used to work for a city highway litter crew. I would literally find phones everyday. Some worked, some didn't. I found a very nice iphone 6 one day. At that time the iphone6 was brand new. It had a number across the screen that said "if found, please call." I called and talked to the owners husband, who had explained that his wife's car had been vanished, and her purse (with the phone) had been stolen. So they had it shut off, and the apparent thief had just chucked it out a window driving down the highway. The dude was super nice!! He met me on the side of the highway like an hour later, demanded I take $100 cash, and also had brought me 2 large subs from Firehouse because he was a manager there, and gave me an additional $20 gift card for Firehouse. Always best to be honest. You never know what someone needs their phone for.

it says "lost phone" that means the person knows its stolen. someone could've found it like it said LOST. technically if you find a wallet or piece of tech you're not required by law to return. with tech tho the original owner will most likely get it back set least now days. he obviously seemed shady but if i find your shit that you mis placed you bet I'm going to ask for a reward for going out of my way plus it was you who foolishly lost it and would've had to pay full price for a new one. chivalry is dead. sorry kind of a tangent and irrelevant ish
