As a Utd fan, we respect Arsenal as a club. Hold your horses you auld enemy, hear me out… You often hear Utd sing Arsenal’s praises. The reason you ask? Utd beat Arsenal at Highbury in an absolute thriller in the league in 1958 that put us 2nd in the league and 6 points behind Wolves. Utd were still favourites to make it 3 league titles in a row. The Munich Air Crash disaster happened days later. Utd still beat AC Milan in the semi finals with a depleted team and no Matt Busby leading us. We obviously lost the 2nd leg and Milan inevitably lost to Madrid. Many across Europe believed it was Utd’s year and for Madrid to pass the torch to the young team of Busby Babes to herald in a period of Utd dominance domestically and on the continent. More important than trophies (as you know, despite our rivalry, you will agree both our clubs are more about than only trophies) my point is Arsenal in their next game after the loss to Utd paid tribute to Utd as a club and all those lost and injured. It should be remembered that at that time Utd were a breath of fresh air in the UK and Europe because it was a very young team that was winning league titles and on the cusp of winning the European Cup against the prime Real Madrid. I would have bet the young lads to have beaten the legends of Madrid that season too and to pip Wolves to the title. Respect🥲👍🏼 Most Liverpool fans don’t know and don’t want to recognise the lost generation at Utd and not winning the league titles and European Cups that young team would have gone on to win more of. Sir Matt did it finally in 68 with a great team in the end, which was always his aim in memory of that young team of the 50s. Thankfully, Fergie honoured that memory too and Amorim has gone on record to try to honour their memory also by again winning the league and European Cup.
