With any expensive toy like an ebike, for instance, you always need to pretend you are in the worst neighborhood in NYC and use that level of protection. Remove all accessories, remove the seat if you have a nice seat, always remove the battery and lock it in your rig or take it with you in a backpack. Don't use just 1 ulock, use 2 + a thick motorcycle chain, anchored to something no power grinder can possibly get through. Yes, take your ebike inside whenever you can--I'd consider getting a ramp that you can put on your rig's front stairs to wheel that bike up & get it inside for safe storage. Getting a bike stolen 4 times, is the universe's way of smacking you upside the head, and they keep doing it, until a lesson is truly learned.

it wasn’t an E bike, but I purchased my first expensive bicycle while living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. as an afterthought, I asked him about bike locks. He looked me straight in the face and said I can sell you a $250 bike lock, but it won’t work any better than a cheap lock if someone really wants this bike. My advice to you is simply don’t leave it alone, if you’re out riding and want to stop for coffee, lock it, but don’t let it out of your sight.” I never forgot that advice. So this is a different situation, there are several good takeaways I got from this from securing my new E bike around my house. Thieves look for opportunities like most people look for jobs. by covering your bike, and attaching a motion alarm, you’re taking two steps to reduce the information they have to judge the opportunity. Thanks for the video and the insight!

That really is the best advice, I never let my bike out of sight when bike touring. The expensive bike-specific locks are pretty useless, look at locksmithing channels to see what's good. For bikes, you just want pewag snow chain and a very hard to rake, pick, or break shutter lock. Sleeve the chain in a tough fabric that'll snag grinding wheels.

@@boxlid214 - Hiplok D1000 is almost grinder proof. You will need a vice and electric (not battery) grinder and many blades if you want to defeat the D1000 in less than 20 minutes. That said, D1000 shackle is small.

Thanks Liz! These are great tips on keeping our e-bikes as safe as possible. I have the cover I have 3 locking items 2 kryptonite chain locks and a kryptonite u-lock. I put a chain through the front wheel to my front 5th wheel Jack and the same with back wheel then I put the u-lock through back wheel and around one of the bike bars. Then I cover it. I have an alarm on my bike as well. I hide an air tag on my bike too. My husband thinks it’s over kill. I don’t. These bike are way to expensive to have it stolen. I worked to hard to just let someone else take my bike.

I dunno. Maybe overkill in some situations, but if you live in NYC, it's probably underkill. Lol. One thing I will say is if I were a thief, I would move on. I have a Kryptonite Chain lock too, and I lost the key. Dang, what a mess. I was trying to get a vice to hold the chain so I could grind through it. Luckily I ended up finding the key. I could see how it would be very hard to position the grinder to cut through it.

@@Tatiacha Yep, any place you go as a transient, you learn the lesson quick, that you can't go Sherlock Holmes and solve the theft. You need to leave. Mine was summer camp. Kid stole my cash, and rode off with his parents into the sunset, performing the heist on going home day. I still got tons of bikes stolen over the years. One was from inside the house, so I am not going to do self harm over that one. Another was at a college animal house, and I had to get on and off that bike like 30 times a day, so I took a break from the locking up while home for lunch. Of course, I think a roommate took it home to his parents house since that gave him plenty of cover to get it fenced. He later revealed his enemy status about something else and got a broken face from me for that. It's so funny how bikes work. You can wear a $20,000 watch and nobody will try to take it. You can have the hottest lover in town, and until she leaves, she's yours, but a bike; it turns into an international conspiracy to separate you from that.

My dearest camping friends had both of their E bikes, stolen off of their car trailer, which was fully alarmed, and the bikes were chained to the welded steel rack that he had customized for the bike carrier. All of the security meant nothing to these thieves. They took it all, including the audible alarm system. And the bike covers, which were there to conceal and protect bikes. I I think the most important thing that you can add to the security system is the portable tracking device, which you can sit down with the sheriff and hunt them down. There was a company on the Internet who was selling three of these devices for $55 but their target market was jealous husbands and wives.! Small enough to slip into a purse or a coat pocket easily. Just think locate one of these underneath the seat on your E bike and you can follow it. Thomyt

You can also set up a raspberry pi to text your phone if the bikes are disturbed. Simple setup with a chinese laptop battery, vibration sensor, and usb SMS module. The code is out there so it doesn't take much programming knowledge. I did that while my friends and I had our bikes all locked up in a hotel room outside NYC. I don't take chances with my bike, even in hotel rooms, it's a stainless vaya travel frame and irreplaceable. You can add camera modules and motion sensors too, then it can text you the pictures it takes as home security cameras do.

Liz you are the best! My wife and I have been following your channel for quite a while now. We also bought Juiced ebikes based on your reviews. I hate thieves. For our Juiced RipCurrents we bought 9 and 4 foot sections of LaClede 3/8" hardened chain and padlocks to match, keyed alike. (chain is about $10-12 per foot) The chains are sleeved in a nylon sheath. Run the chain through our RV wheel and through the frames of both bikes. We use the 4' section as an extender or sometimes lock our generator up in the truck bed or even to the RV frame. We make sure to cover the bikes when not in use. The chains will hold up to all but the 5-6 foot bolt cutters and will probably just slow down a thief with an angle grinder/cutoff wheel and diamond bits. I like the motion sensor alarm - may have to add that to the countermeasures as well.

Lots of great information Liz! We actually took our table and chairs out of our fifth wheel and with the use of a portable 7’ aluminum ramp we just roll our two bikes up into our rig and call it good. I’ve even devised a way to secure the bikes in the rig for travel! Put on well over 10,000 miles with the fifth wheel last year with no problems at all with the bikes moving or falling. Works great! Very seldom do we ever miss the table being in there anymore. Keep up the great videos and stay safe out there.

One tip to add to your other tips is do not leave your lock accessible to thieves. Take it with you or keep it inside where thieves can't get to it when you aren't there. My wife had a bike stolen with a key they made for the lock she left at the bike rack. Thieves can get or have a key made for your lock by reading the numbers on the lock. Great tips Liz! I will add covers as thieves can find it harder to figure out if it is worth dealing with a cover. As funny as it may sound, in addition, I have duct tape covering the name-brand of my e-bikes. Black duct tape for my black bike and white for the white bike. I don't care about advertising the brand or getting added attention. Those Motorbike/Bicycle Anti-Theft Alarms are great but can be annoying if the alarm goes off at a bike rack when many other riders are using the rack. The alarm scared the living lights out of this guy. He was not happy :) I also use the ABUS Bordon 6000 bracket locks that come with an alarm. Which you can activate depending on where you park your bike. The locks can be expensive. With these two alarms, I feel a little more comfortable due to the fact that the thief will have to deal with two alarms going off- and now by adding the covers it should make it even harder to steal the bikes. First, if they try to remove the cover, both the bracket lock and the Bicycle Anti-theft alarms with give him a warning and if they proceed, both alarms will go off. They are both pretty loud.

Yes I know, I am just some random person on the internet (and I would have done the same as you, and ignored me, lol), but damn, four eBikes? I have had my eBike for 8 years now, no thefts. MY RULES: KEEP IT INSIDE THE VEHICLE (you said you could not so Then INCLOSE it with some kind of cover!!!) Get several locks, a chain one and a U lock AND ANOTHER!!! Yes, three locks. Never leave the bike out of your sight if outside, NEVER!!! (yes, hard to do) NEVER leave the battery in the bike! (easy to do) Engrave the bike with info, lots of info! Get an alarm, simple cheap and easy. Get a personal camera to watch your RV at all times. Use a tracker (not that good, but what the hell). I did not know the insurance info you provided. Bummer. My 40 year old motor bike lock looks like that one. I used it to lock my expensive touring bike. Like you say, nothing is 100%. I could likely cut that thing in less than 2 minutes with a special reciprocating saw blade. It would be great if RVs came out with bike ports and the bike handle bars folded to make a slim fit. A little fold down ramp on one corner of the rig. Get fancy and make it an electric ramp. Simple rubber treaded belt over chain driven.

The removal of the battery is the absolute best advice. Most bike thieves wants to steal a bike to sell it. It is practically worth nothing to them without a battery and although it may not be worth for them to go and buy a new battery, should they, many bike dealers wants to see your receipt of actually buying sush a bike before they sell you a battery.

Hi Liz, thanks for making this comprehensive video... A few month ago I had saw your video where you were a victim of bike theft at a hotel. You were most fortunate to recover your bike. I'm glad that you had learned a great deal since then about the threats and the protection measures regarding bike thefts. I hope that others will take your advise and be more vigilant. You're correct, no lock is 100% secured against bike thefts, however bike locks like the Litelok X1/X3 and the Hiplok D1000 will act as great deterrents and most likely motivate the thief to look elsewhere. These bike lock are heavy and expensive, but they are highly effective. If you have an expensive e-bike get one of these locks or risk losing your bike. One thing that I want to add, when leaving your bike locked while you're away. Bring a small back pack, take off accessories such as GPS devices, controllers, head/tail lights and as Liz said bring your battery with you. If you don't pack it away, someone else will.

It is a sad world when you have to worry about thieves. I had one stolen with GPS tracker, so I called the PD of the city it was located with the address of the bike location. They told me they cannot investigate based on GPS. It is city of Norwalk, CA. My family kept me from going Rambo on that house. PD found it abandoned after 10 days. I guess they found the locator and got spooked.

Liz, I've been watching a few of your vids tonight and immediately subscribed. You are "amazing" for sure from the little I've already seen. Glad to be here. I would note that Kuat, Thule, and Saris (possibly others) specifically warn against using bike covers while transporting bikes on their racks. "Covers produce significant drag at speed, and you risk damaging your bike rack. Worse, the flapping cover can damage the paint and components on your bikes..." That quote was from Saris. I have a Kuat platform rack, called them, and they told me essentially the same thing -- "DO NOT use a cover on our Kuat racks while in transit" -- for basically the same reasons. Also, legally-speaking, bike covers would block the rear license plate on most vehicles thereby risking a ticket. A friend of mine in St. Louis was ticketed for that very reason (and no other). I would definitely cover my bike anytime parked, but not in transit. Keep up the good work Liz.

Hi Liz. Thanks for another terrific video. Your tips on preventing e-bike thefts are excellent! I agree with all your suggestions and have implemented most of them except the air tags because I have an android phone. It would be great if one of your subscribers could recommend a good GPS tracker for android. I especially like your recommendation for an angle grinder resistant lock. I didn't know that there was one. Also, I was curious how your bike cover performs when you are on the road traveling? Does it keep your bike relatively clean and do you have to add extra straps to keep it from flapping around a lot? Like you, I have an expensive e-bike so I have a seperate insurance policy just for my e-bike. It helps me sleep better at night.

Liz, the one thing that makes me not want to get one of these angle grinder resistant locks are if the person trying to steal the E-bike uses a drill to drill out where your key enters the lock gets damaged, and then your key becomes useless. In that case you will need to find away to get the lock off. You will need to have access to an angle grinder to cut the lock off so you will have access to your E-bike. I use multiple locks that takes a person time to cut, and i have a way to cut off if needed. Like your video's Liz
@cdsersd2d
@cdsersd2d Жыл бұрын
Nobody uses drills anymore. Angle grinder is the tool of choice. Plus, just lock an alarm lock around the bar, so if the thief moves the lock, the alarm goes off. Any good thief that knows what they're doing won't even mess with a grind resistant lock. Or, they will cut the frame of the bike. There are much easier targets. Spending 20 minutes making noise and grinding isn't worth it for most thieves.

Great info as always. Speaking of insurance, can you maybe do a video about insuring an RV that you are living in and traveling with? Thanks again for sharing your secrets.

Hi Teena! There are several full-time insurance plans for RVers. Try Progressive or State Farm. Thanks for watching and see you in the next video.

Great tips for e-bike owners! It’s a shame that some people have to be thieves! But your tips should help if people follow them! Happy Camping and Safe Travels! ❤️❤️

The question is what you attach that Litelok to. Bc if it's to that bike rack then it can easily be unscrewed. Unfortunately these u-locks/d-locks don't offer much flexibility. So as good as the Litelok is, you may not be able to attach it to a solid object at times and make it fit.

Great tips! I use the same cover on my himiway ebike, best advice ever to cover it so they don't immediately see what you have! I use 2 similar grinder proof U locks on both my wheels, locking it to my hauler rack. Definitely getting one of those alarms and I'd also like to see if there's an android version of the air tag. I'm always so paranoid when I go into a store even though I know it would take someone well over 30 minutes to get past my locked cover and 2 burly U locks on the bike.
