Bolton Ebikes I use 2 heavy duty U locks. One has a medium thickness cable to keep wheels and seat attached. I also pull the battery off of my ebike
@landofahhs_14 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I don't let my ebike out of my sight. Even if locked there is nothing to protect from people (usually kids) who get enjoyment out of ruining other people's property when no one's watching just to get a laugh. An ebike is a much better target than my mailbox...It can be ruined with a few quick kicks or a single blow from a rock to the plastic battery case no bat needed. And I live in the rural Kansas five mile from the nearest town of only 10,000. If I was back in LA I'd really be paranoid, because had two regular bikes stolen there from bicycle racks at schools I attended and they both had locks with very heavy chains.

I have watched several videos testing bike locks. No one has actually done the tests under ALL of the following conditions. 1. Use portable grinder popular with thieves. 2. Include in the tests the time to change out blades and batteries on the portable grinders. In real life that time would add to cutting the locks. 3. Locking the bike locks in a more realistic scenario wrapping the rear wheel, frame and bike rack. 4. Additional second or third lock wrapping around front wheel, frame and bike rack. 5. Steps to take if you encounter thief while in progress.

What I've learned from watching The Lock Picking Lawyer is that a good, pick resistant lock is one where he has to use one of his special tools. If it can be picked with just a tensioner, a pick or a "rake", then that end of things is pretty secure. The next is cutting the device. His video showed that particular Kryptonite is very good in that regard. I don't know what kind of lock it uses though.

Interestingly enough, with regard to 'theft' in our city, there was a video taken of a guy using a grinder in the middle of our largest city, trying to get a lock off, which was attached to a pole encased in concrete. People where walking by on the sidewalk, as this guy had sparks flying in all directions, occasionally looking in his direction. One person asked what he's doing, and he said he lost the key to his lock! Then someone else said, we'll I've dialled 911 and the police are on their way to make sure this really is your bike!! He continued with grinding for another minute or two...where he then left with his grinder, grabbing another bike he had behind a short wall, and then took off! Thus, to say having more than 'one' choice of lock, is probably your best bet, in that if no one ever called the authorities the time it would take the thief (along with an alarm going off) 'should' be enough for the thief to try for an easier target! Of course getting video of these thieves is helpful too, if you see it happening to someone else's e-bike/bike.

But I also am very picky where I will leave my bike locked up.... Plus the flat lock being on the top tube of my bike also works very well as a defense weapon. I had an instance where this guy literally tried to run me off the road and hit me, I caught him at a light and busted his window out on my way by.... to bad he was stuck at a light and couldn't pursue... You covered some good points; and the L.P. Lawyer is of course a must....however, you showed the link-lock as the lock you'll be carrying on your bike - that lock is better than ANY cable, and arguably better than some chains...that said, a bolt cuter at one of the rivets will compromise the lock... "You have to draw that line." The best lock "by weight" too "security" is a chain lock. A chain is NOT a chain. It MUST be 3T triple heat treated boron Manganese steel WITH "6 sides" per link... Not joking. The "6 sided" link for instance, makes the link that much harder. So, each link super strong , there is NO weak-point at the rivet. And even though these are already good reason, the important reason reason why a chain is superior is that it doesn't stay still! If youre trying to cut it, it moves around... You can't grab a-hold of it like a u-lock, or even the lock you have there with the rivets, in order to cut it. It simply "Wiggles around" like jello in comparison to anything else when trying to cut it. Now make sure you buy a strong lock comprable to the chain and don't attach it to something else that could be cut easier than the chain. More over, put a tracker on the bike; these days and apple tag or the Android version works great. Best place to put the tag would be inside the the stem, the end of the stem where the 4 bolt hold the bar to your bike, or in the bottom bracket, which is where your pedals go, if you can get to that part. And or, finally, inside the actual Tire itself. If you run a tubeless tire, it's easiest to put the tag inside the Tire and the Wheel. Or in second place, just between the tire and the tube. Final thought. If for some reason you take a bike, any bike, on the front of the bus rack, make sure you lock the bike to the bus tracker. They'll steal the bicycle off the front of the bus and run just like they will do anywhere else. So even if you're standing on the bus looking at the bicycle, still make sure you put a lock on the bicycle. And still MORE, carry a TASER. These people will Jack-you for the bike directly. FINALLY, don't leave your ID on the bicycle someplace so that if they steal the bicycle, they don't also now have your address!

Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit mini, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can TEXT you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything can happen, time is the most critical factor!

That would be pretty cool to have the alarm TEXT YOU. that is a SMART IDEA!!. even if multiple people touch it, and it was out of curiosity, at least the thief will know that you are being alerted some how and they will CANCEL THE THEFT!!. I have never heard of an alarm that can text you if alarm is disturbed, and it be nice if it works 2,000 feet away, without the need of actual cell phone service. it will just attach to your PHONE, or internet phone letting you know something is disturbing the ALARM. that is a smart way, that will make a lot of people less paranoid of leaving their bike un attended for a certain amount of time, and thieves will just not even bother. And they need to make (E-BIKES) fall under the CAR LAWS. Car laws in my STATE?, are very SERIOUS. a guy/neighbor is doing 10yrs right now for car theft. that was back in 2017 and the landlord evicted the entire family. I live in a respected neighborhood my landlord is a BILLIONAIRE, he's not PLAYING NO GAMES has tons of properties in 30 different states. 😮 My state is BRUTAL with (CAR THEFT LAWS). they need to add that to (E-BIKES) since they can range over $1k $20k plus dollars. if no laws pass?, than like I always say?, the politicians are siding/COMPLICITY with the CRIMINALS. so they need to show LOYALTY to me as a TAX PAYER I pay for their BILLS, so they can eat cake, and LOBSTER at their favorite restaurants. 🤷♀🤬🤬

The Fahgettaboudit can be defeated in less than 30 seconds with a grinder. It's no longer the leader in security. Kryptonite has been completely derelict not pursuing grinder-resistant locks. The first material of its kind was developed six or more years ago (Proteus) and they've sat on their hands. I even sent them the press release about the material and they couldn't even bother to reply. Hiplok and Litelok have replaced everyone else at the top for functional, top quality bicycle security. If you want pure mass, then there's nothing better than the biggest Squire padlock and the Allmax Immobilizer chain. 25mm thick links are pretty much grinder-proof. That will be less tempting to the thieves to steal as it is secured with multiple locks and requires more time than cutting just an expensive lock. Also install some kind of alarm on the bike so that when someone touches it the alarm goes off and scare the shit out of any potential thief as the sound will draw peoples attention.

There's absolutely no point in having a lock if you end up being mugged for your electric bike. Anyone riding a bike worth thousands of dollars/pounds, is likely to be jumped. What's needed is a GPS tracker hidden on, or within, the frame. If, you do get it stolen, you can then find it on Google maps and go round to the scum bags house and introduce him to your homies and, also introduce his knees to your baseball bat 💪.

Hey Kyle, good video. You covered pretty much the whole subject. In anticipation of getting my Blackbird I picked up a brake disk rotor lock that incorporates a 120 db alarm. Was this worth $ 25 of security? And I also got a seat taillight with an alarm with a clicker. These seem to be cheap and easy, so is this pretty good for a start?
@timgreen18353 жыл бұрын
It's funny that you said that… I just got an E bike a few days ago, and those are the exact two alarms that I also bought. I like the tail light alarm because nobody can walk up and tell that it's an alarm, and I think the disc brake alarm will detour thieves because they cannot just takeoff and ride. I have to admit, I'm more confident about these alarms than I am chains and cables and U-boats and such....But I have a fairly heavy chain to lock my bike up to a post or object, and I have a cable lock that I use for my front tire. I just got my bike put all together so I have not had a chance to use these yet, but I most certainly do not want my ebike stolen. I also always take my bike into the grocery store, and I quickly lock up my frame to the rear wheel with a cable lock… Only takes about three seconds, And will keep someone from jumping on and taking off on it (speaking of my nice road bike and mountain bike) I'm surprised with all of these videos I watch about security, none of them talk about the disc brake alarms, or the tail light alarm that you mentioned. The disc brake alarms are so inexpensive, that there's no reason to not have one, to help supplement bike security. So at any given time I can have my disc brake alarm, my chain, my cable lock, and my tail light alarm....Was not that much money for all of those items, and I would think these would make my ebike "harder" to steal at least

RAD owners like me love your stuff and give you lots of business, sharing your videos with family and friends who also ride a RAD. . A better approach would be to call Mike Radenbauer - RAD customer service and tell them about the vulnerability, NOT post a video telling THE WORLD how to nab $500 batteries!

Really? The most basic of mechanical understanding makes those battery locks vulnerable. As locks they are on par with a bathroom door lock not a front door dead bolt. Even if each one had its own unique key you should not trust the lock to protect your battery. ALWAYS take the battery with you!

For the seat use a crimped 1/8 coated cable. I go into Home Depo buy the cable and crimps and borrow their crimping tool (they usually have one there so ask). Leave enough slack so you can pull out the seat. Seat thieves usually don't have tool and this system allows you to adjust the seat height.

I bought a lock on Amazon that I believe was made for motorcycles. It is a solid chunk of metal that just clips on a disc and sets off a car alarm if the bike is moved. It isn't efficient in itself but in conjunction with a good lock, at least they will have everyone, in earshot, looking at them while they try to remove the other lock.

I have three e-bikes and one of them I really like and it gets three locks on it if I leave it unattended. I have a mini e-bike, and two 26" mountain e-bikes... one with fat tires at four inches wide and one with normal 26" x 2.125 inch mountain bike tires. Any way... more locks the more time it takes and with that I spend less than fiftenn minutes in a store because each lock would take five minutes each to break by a professional thief so keeping my time in a shop or whatever less than the time a professional can take to steal it... that works... LOL! For my best e-bike... the other two I can live life okay if one got stolen but each has seasonal purpose so not being gone would always be better for the e-bikes I have. Any way... wish you the best and thanks for the video and interesting how one key could unlock every battery on that one bike... no matter what as long as it was a blank key... that is ridiculous on the manufacturers part so taking the lithium ion battery is wise since on my bikes that are a minimum of 250 US Dollars to replace just one... giving batteries away isn't a great idea either or riding home without a seat to think about it and I have extra seats but getting one stolen... well not my idea of a good day for a seat either... so taking a quick release seat with me into a store or such is a good idea since I lost my left leg below the knee in 2018 and don't feel like standing on pedals with a leg amputation as well... LOL! Did make me laugh thinking about that... I would be very pissed if my seat was stolen... probably more so than a battery but with out the battery the hills in my area would be a killer... so any way always something to "protect" but makes me laugh how life works... as WWII Veterans called it... SNAFU... "tuation Normal All F'ed Up"! LOL! Never ends... might as well laugh and make it difficult for the A-Holes out there that are thieves... when you can. I know they would not to meet me when I loose my cool... I'm worse than any A-Hole when I am pissed off and dangerous to them and myself... LOL! But I've been cut in half twice and lost a left leg so I guess normal for me... wish all of you the best and thanks for the video and the laughs... about A-Hole thieves and the A-Hole isn't where keys fit too well... isn't how to release the lock mechanism... but anger issues I guess can be released with A-Holes... a stinky locking situation and I have to laugh at my own stupid joke. Later and thanks...
