I’m usually a silent viewer, but I wanted to make sure you know you’re appreciated and inspiring. Please don’t ever stop making content, you have a much needed voice in this community, your conversations/discussions are ones I feel like a lot would benefit from listening to.

Thank you for this video!! I’m so glad that some of the things that frustrate me about BookTube are not just in my head. I get soo annoyed when I see non-Black booktubers using AAVE; yet they don’t know much about the Black community or literature. I have started unsubscribing to Booktubers who do that because I can’t support someone who is only using AAVE for views and cool points; but not to spread the beauty of Black life and literature. I also get frustrated by romance booktubers who never read black love romances or any non-white romances.

I saw this and had to comment! It frustrates me to no end that romance booktubers barely read black romance books. Either they don’t know what’s out there or they don’t care. It’s probably a mix of both.

There are a lot of phrases that people use which I didn't know were AAVE until I heard Ashley and Bre talk about it, and now I hear it everywhere. A lot of the time I give people the benefit of the doubt and think they are just parroting what they've heard other white people say, but there are some influencers who I know have had it pointed out to them and they continue to do it.

I have to be honest I didn’t know It’s considered AAVE I’m grateful to get to know that but personally I think a lot of booktubers especially white are not aware this is an AAVE terminology.

@@pagesofsyd I feel the same. This year, I decided to raise my standards: I've unsuscribed from the book content creators, that didnt read ONE book for BHM. It doesnt matter if the creators are POC or feminist, or belong to another marginalised community. It was time for me to stop being in one-sided relationships with creators, to stop loving people, that dont acknowledge my existence and my experiences. And it has made me happier: I love the creators I follow. I only wish, they had more subscribers, they deserve it. The talent and creativity is there as Ashley pointed out.

It doesn't really bother me because as a black woman I prefer to read mainly black or interracial romances. I find white romances to be boring and I'm not ashamed to admit that lol 😂

Thank you so much for this video Ashley. I appreciate your voice in this community. I definitely don’t like that people talked up a big game in 2020 and now they’re back to the same old habits of barely reading books by Black authors. Also, the empathy thing is spot on. People need to have more of it and recognize that some things are harmful to other communities. ❤️

About the temporary diverse situation, it's not just booktube. Most people give important issues that don't affect them fleeting attention. They only do it to appear fair but if they truly cared their actions would reflect so.

Yeah it's really unfortunate and frustrating - sort of off topic, but I work in a field that occasionally gets media attention (mental health in jails) and any time anything changes I've started just asking "oh is the media paying attention to us again?" only to find out, yup another article came out so we'll have two weeks of change then go back to the status quo when articles stop profiting. It's incredibly frustrating because for me it's just my job being harder, but for my clients it's quite literally a life or death issue that people sometimes decide to care about. The "change" that happens often does more harm than good because they'll disrupt the little stability our clients have. It seems to be that way for every hot button issue and I just don't even know what the solution is at this point.

I really enjoy your discussion videos, I always learn so much. I cannot speak about the same things as you but as a disabled person I also have many issues with the book internet community. Mainly because even when discussing diversity disabled people are still ignored.. Just the other day I got so upset about someone's comment about chronic pain and invisible illness (which is what my disabilities are) that I legit started crying. Sometimes booktubers just don't even try to understand or be respectful. Anyways, I am a more recent subscriber but I love all of your videos and actually feel comfortable enough to comment on your videos and I am always filled with joy when I get a notification that you posted. As my medical issues have changed watching your videos has helped me stay happy so I am very very thankful for that.

SO many comments we wanna make. you have our heart, Ashley. we're so proud of you. oftentimes we will come back to your videos just to play them in the background and give u the view increase u deserve because we know damn well the way your voice is often over-valued for your "tea" videos but not for your "non tea" videos. we know how damn exhausting and hurtful that is, from experience. we know how that feels like a personal rejection because it is in many ways. you and your voice are valuable. and creators like you keep me here.

As a library professional, a reader, and a writer, it is clear to me that diversifying your experience has to be intentional. I am always on the lookout for how I can assure that I am not leaving out groups that need to be seen, diversifying my shelf and proving to the algorithms that black, indigenous, SWANA, Asian, queer, Jewish, and Latine creators valuable to me. I see these issues and I'm here with you in frustration. I appreciate you!

okay first off the glasses look fantastic on you! And thank you for continuing to provide your thoughtful commentary and perspective on so many topics - that is a huge amount of emotional labor that you don't owe us but we're grateful you still do it 💞 Yes! it's not a lack of self-worth to be frustrated when you put so much work and heart into something but don't get the results you've earned One of my ongoing frustrations is the continued lack of respect for kidlit in a lot of reviewer spaces. Not all, of course! and I'm thrilled that with a few huge releases, adults reading Middle Grade has become a little more mainstream. But it's frustrating to see even people who make a huge deal out of how widely they read in terms of genre etc., sneer at YA or MG because it's 'not as complex' or something - which isn't true!! I keep wanting to tell people that if you feel like a certain kind of book is "all the same" (like the people declaring YA fantasy is "over"???!!) then maybe you need to do better at seeking out books you're interested in instead of reading the top 3 books that get all the marketing dollars and that have similar premises.......and then complaining because they're similar 🙃but I don't want to start an argument with them so I usually just don't say anything😂

The thing that I've learned during my mid-late 20's is that you can say "I'm sorry". But you are not entitled to forgiveness. And if someone say "I'm sorry" to you, you don't have to forgive. This was a really great video.

Thank you for this video; it was very insightful. I just started watching your channel and I truly enjoy your content. I started watching Booktube videos when I started reading for fun again after retiring from a long-term career (since I never felt I had enough time to really enjoy the process because I had so many other things on my plate). Taking that space made me realize that not only do I enjoy reading but I also enjoy writing. So, I started my first novel and began searching for books AND writing videos. I think the thing that frustrates me about this community is the fact that I had to SEARCH high and low to find book lovers and authors who look like me. That's not to say I don't enjoy watching non-Black people reviewing books or giving writing advice. However, sometimes I want to hear from other Black people who can understand that many Black people have had a different experience that is understood only by those within this race. And doesn't need to be explained, and/or ridiculed as if it is ridiculous or something. Another thing that bothers me about the community is the way some people will give credibility to a book solely because the author is famous, and not take the time to read newer authors. In addition, a lot of book reviewers and writers will hone in on a few popular genres and not read books or provide writing advice for genres that are not as popular. I am in a writing class at my local library and I am the only person who writes in a certain genre. However, I have found that reading other genres to critique another writer's work has been very educational since I'm still learning the foundations of writing and can now recognize them in any genre, not just my own. I also hate when Booktubers try to give advice on writing a book but have NEVER published a book! Unfortunately, they put out these videos telling you to buy their course or subscribe to their channel and not disclose that they've never written and/or published a book. I think that's WILD. And DISHONEST. I have thought many times about starting a channel to track my writing journey and share books I've enjoyed. However, I've hesitated in doing so because I'm not a published author. After all, it seems as soon as you tell people you're a writer, they want "proof." Well, I write. Therefore, I'm a writer. I'm not an author (yet) but I hope to be, and I certainly love to read books! I've seen many Booktubers (who are Caucasian) even gossip about other Booktubers' channels (without merit), and it makes me wonder about casting myself into a community with people who are not professional, and downright mean. Yet, I would love to share what I know and enjoy with others. I'm still debating. Anyway, I want to leave on a positive note. I really enjoy your channel. You're honest and supportive of other channels (not just because many are run by Black Booktubers) but because their channels have valuable content. I wish you continued success, and I will definitely stay subscribed AND an active participant. Thanks again for the video. Now, on to your next one! LOL. *PS - Your glasses look great! I have to get my new glasses so I'll check them out.

At the time of this comment, I'm new to your channel and I've been going through your content, seeing if it's something I'd enjoy. I usually silently watch and give comments only when I really have something to say. I've recently been on a hunt for booktubers because I've been reading a lot more recently. I also did realize most of the booktubers I'm subscribed to are not black creators. And I did realize that I don't come across black creators (probably because I'm not subscribed, so KZbin just doesn't recommend, as you mentioned). I want to learn more and understand more from other perspectives, not just the majority. I really think it's important to have these conversations even if they might not be fun things about books. Thank you for voicing your frustrations and opening up this conversation :) (Edit: Two things that frustrate me about the book community. One, people keep buying new books as in recently released. What about old books or minor books? Treasures found in a secondhand store? Books that the booktuber was genuinely interested in and not because those books are hyped. The second thing is that many don't give honest book reviews. Especially hyped books. It's all good. Nothing is bad. But really? All of them? That's why I do like book vlogs, but I understand those take time to make so are not preferable for creators.)

This is so well spoken and detailed and fair. Being on booktube has opened my eyes to so many things. People can be so cruel but sometimes things need to be said as much as they need to be heard. There was a time years ago when this girl commented on my video saying she was uncomfortable with some AAVE phrases I was using. I had to Google it cause I had no idea what that meant. And then I looked back and was like “oh hell, I do that! I absolutely do that!” And I’m lucky cause she didn’t have to be so nice or informative. I should’ve known on my own. But I’m so glad that social media can call attention to faults in creators cause at least it’s giving them the opportunity to change. I cringe to think I could still be doing that and completely ignorant that I’m hurting people. I appreciate you taking time to make this video and be informative. I was reminded of a lot of things I need to be cognizant of. Thank you for putting this into the universe.

I really missed watching your videos. I got caught up with life and haven't been on book tube much. There's so much I wanna comment on, but I'm at work and will end up writing paragraphs to you, haha. I agree with so much of what you've said. I also hate how much anyone with an online presence has to say the same disclaimer (this is my experience, I'm not saying ALL of X and Y, etc) because people just have poor communication and discernment skills. Someone's not gonna like that I said that. It still holds true. For so many people and really until it clicks for someone, certain things in life are not trends. Talking about BLM is not a trend. Uterus owners' rights, as another example, is not a trend. Certain things aren't trends to care about here and there. There are things to give attention to, think about, and reevaluate what we've learned with what we've known so we can move forward smarter. Nope. Cute, trendy, wheeeeee. That's it. The older I get the less patience I have for it.

Now that you mention it, I am frustrated with some of this community. In fact, I've unsubscribed to most Book Tube channels. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I went back and watched the AAVE video and watched the SNL video (i hadn't watched it because its not my cup of tea lol). Once I started getting back into reading, I intentionally sought out black and non-white booktubers to follow. I noticed that whenever I looked up book reviews, mainly white or racially ambigious booktubers popped up. It has taken me nearly a year to train my algorithim to see more black creaters in general on my reccomended pages. It saddens me that so many Black creators don't get the viewership and engagement that they deserve. I kinda knew it was gonna happen and that after 2020, people would revert to what they are most comfortable with. *shrug*

I remember when your discussion about people following you at the height of the BLM movement but not with the intention of actually participating in yours and other black creator’s communities. I knew you were going to be right but I had hoped that people would listen to you. It’s been really disheartening to see everything you said come true. I’m usually a lurker on your channel but I wanted to let you know that you have helped me a great deal since I subscribed to your channel. I’m almost done with my MLIS program and, as a Latina, seeing another WOC in this profession keeps me going. Also, I love that you read and review books of all kinds of levels. as a viewer of booktube content, i found myself feeling exasperated as well. i am thankfully subscribed to a lot of black/indigenous/asian content creators - who are queer/and or disabled, as well - because their reviews are always a hell lot more nuanced/enlightening that some of the booktubers i see with exponential growth just because it's a pretty (by conventional eurocentric standards) person holding a book & therefore, the book is good! i noticed a lot of comments in those book videos tend to be about how the booktuber look versus "wow that book sounds exciting omg!" i have left a rather long comment on Sajid's booktube video about me ranting about how some booktubers with 500k followers really cant say a proper review to save their life.. I'm trying to not be mean but as the position of the viewer, it really is telling when someone is rewarded for looks and having the income to do massive book hauls (digital racism and classism exists!) versus someone who is in this because they understand what a review means. the other day i watched this booktuber (justali) went to a black women owned bookstore and gave us a tour of all the amazing books in it. only for her to purchase a book (the patient?) written by a WHITE CISMAN AUTHOR who many (on booktube) have suspected to write women terribly as it was affirmed in his second book (which i forgot cos i don't care for his books). at that point, i left a rather long comment and was deleted because i pointed out that she literally took that book from a small ass shelf from that bookstore while the store owners were happily displaying books by black authors!!!!! like yes, she supported the bookstore by purchasing but you cant even purchase the black romance books there? why? (in fairness, she did pick up one book and realised it was part of a series and mentioned wanting to go back there and buy it.. but at that point im like which part is performance because your actions said nothing) edit for spelling and sentence structure. also to add that if you want me to go back and delete the booktuber names, please lmk. i honestly am all for name dropping since i am stating an example of her behaviour.

Mina did a great job unpacking that and I saw it too. It's upsetting to see the cultural appropriation in the book community. I've been a book blogger since 2010 and have seen things like that. It's been happening a while, there's a bit more pushback now compared to back then, but it's still underwhelming for progress to be made. Agreed with lack of empathy in the community. I see that a lot. I missed the live with all of you talking with Bethany so I'll have to watch that after this. 👀

I'm late to this so not sure if you're still checking comments, but I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to share, for being willing to say things that NEED to be said even if you know there may be some people who aren't ready to hear it. Your points about listening and empathy are just so, so important. And they transcend the specific issues you're talking about as well - I feel like more empathy and listening would serve all of us, in every context, and that doesn't happen near enough in any arena in western society, imo. It can be hard to face some of the issues that have been brought up in the past couple of years for people who have had the privilege of not being forced into awareness, but it's necessary, and it's nowhere near as hard as living it. I think that's something that is so hard to have patience with - when people do or say something offensive and then get upset and want sympathy for how being called out has made THEM feel. Come on. If it comes from a genuine lack of knowledge and understanding - as you said, it's a great opportunity to learn, to seek out information and to grow as a person. If not, well then you're showing your true colours. No one is perfect, everyone messes up sometimes and says things they don't know are offensive (or appropriating). It's what you do next that says who you really are. Learning is a lifelong undertaking, and it's hard when people feel like getting called out or someone pointing out an issue is an attack. It can be, but it often isn't. It usually is someone saying hey, did you know about this? No? Let me share my experience. It isn't easy to share that, and it's a gift. It needs to be treated as such, I think. Again, thank you so much for your thoughts. I agree with you on every single point, and I also hope that change does happen - I'm not holding my breath, but I try to keep hope going! I love your content and have found so many great books thanks to you. I hope you keep being honest about the problems you encounter! Your eloquence and directness are so valuable and wonderful to see. Basically, you rock!

Changing habits is hard and one has to be honest that it will take time. I started picking up all these cool black indie romance novels after watching your videos but I know I will slide to the same old and same old because it’s familiar to me. I then go back and rewatch your videos to kick my own butt. Thank you for all the effort you put into this and the videos you’ve given us … Also I love your glasses …

another gripe ive had with is how a lot of booktubers I've watched would subconsciously not choose books with diverse representation because they unknowingly associate white cishet-led/written books as "fun escapism" even if the same fucking books contain triggering content. It's something I've picked up from observing how they review and choose books (since I love watching book shopping vlog because bookstores in my country are not as vibrant as in the US/UK/Europe). I think this is more commonly talked in the SFF scene where readers would stay away from BIPOC authors because they don't want their books to be too political.. all the while, SFF is inherently political in nature? I noticed this when I finished the Broken Earth Trilogy and the Goodreads 1 star reviews are just racists being racists as hell. another example, i just finished reading Show Me A Sign by An Clare LeZotte (a middle grade historical fiction with an ownvoices deaf white author. i recommend it!) and the reviews were annoying. parents saying they wont let their children read because the white child protagonist was kidnapped but failed to ignore how.. there were many mentions of black and indigenous kids being enslaved/forced to work could be difficult for a child to read as well??? i swear white readers are SO fucking frustrating. it's almost like.. only white people can be happy or feel pain which makes them the "ideal" protaganist/writer for a reader to see themselves in.

I don't comment on much online because it usually sends my anxiety into spirals agonizing over worlds, but we're fighting through it today to tell you how much I enjoy and learn from your content, Ashley! Over the last couple/few years, you've become my favorite creator - from your serious discussion videos to giving comic books the attention they deserve to talking about being a librarian (I'm a research librarian!) -- it's all so genuine, so GOOD. You're incredible. Thank you for being here doing what you do!

Thank youuuuu! I've been trying to find the words to make a video about the Mistreatment of the Black community on this community. And you made them clear and said many things I wanted to say. There's so much we do, and the way we don't get much in response. I barely get into reading cause I just feel like I don't belong here anymore and should keep to myself. But thank you for this! 💜

I first found your channel 2 yrs ago because it was recommended. I subscribed and continue to watch your videos because of your content and lets be honest...because of your personality. I must be really picky because I don't follow many booktube channels but yours is my go-to. I trust that your content is going to be quality and have substance. This video is a good reminder that youtube is a rabbit hole for recommendations. We get what we seek. If we stop looking, we stop finding.

I love your discussions about the community, it's very enlightening and at the same time, encouraging for other Black creators to keep doing what they love. It's really nice to see your channel thriving and I am hoping that other Black creators find similar success. ❤Honestly, I feel like I'm a very moody watcher of KZbin. I mostly watch booktube, and a lot of times, I tend to be very specific with my searches -- and I visit the channels where I know have the same reading tastes (or main genre) as me. I used to watch booktube because I wanted to be a content creator too, but over time, I've realized I only use it (or any social media in the book community) to get book recommendations. I think it's time to explore the community more to find new creators to support and interact with. 😊

You know, you were actually one of the first booktubers that I ever found - AND the person who introduced me to the term "booktube." I follow you on Goodreads, too. Just want you to know that I appreciate you! Edit: Also, I don't know if it helps with your motivation to know this or not, but I found you in... I think it was 2018 or 2019. I had just accepted a position as a paraprofessional in the library field and I was seeking out other librarians' perspectives before deciding whether or not to pursue my MLS. So thank you for, unbeknownst to you, helping a colleague get a start in the profession. I graduated in 2020 and have been a working librarian for two years now. Much love!

I agree 100%. I really hate the lack of empathy thing and the lack of follow through thing. I see people doing it all the time and it sucks. I also really appreciate the way you made a point of saying "other communities" and the way you make a point of reading queer books. That's so lovely and so, so appreciated. Probably more than you know. Also, you super deserve more views than you get. You're one of my favorite youtubers at this point, I've gotten so many good book recs from you! I wish more people paid attention to the stuff you're doing. 'Cause it's good stuff.

I love your videos so much. You're always so informative and kind, even when you're frustrated and you have every right to be frustrated about these things! As hard as it is though, I'm glad you say these things because they do need to be said. But also if it does get too difficult, take care of yourself first, please. The booktube community is very lucky to have you but your own health and well being should always come first. One thing I've noticed about the AAVE thing not just on BookTube but on the Internet in general is how rampant and wide-spread it is, to the point where it's hard to tell, as somebody who isn't Black, what new term is AAVE. I mean at this point I do feel like nine times out of ten, if the internet is passing around a new phrase, it's probably AAVE, so I should know better, but I had absolutely no idea "hot girl summer" started as AAVE. I feel like unless you know, the internet makes it nearly impossible to know the origins of these terms. They just get ripped from the community and passed around with reckless abandon. I can't imagine how frustrating that must be as somebody who does know.

I’ll be honest I’m also a booktuber (& other content) & I’ve been gone for about two years and I have doubts about coming back to the book community when I do come back to my channel this month. Hi Ashley, You came up on my feed, I read the comments and thought discussion sounded like stuff I needed to hear and clicked. Within a minute I had subscribed as I love your vibe. Impressed you kept this under 30mins as each of those topics you could have kept chatting about...and I would have watched. Def going to check out the channels you mentioned too. Black booktubers being viewed as a way for white people to decrease their guilt is incredibly heartbreaking, and in my Rose coloured glasses world of white privilege is something I never considered before. But now you have said it I can see it (just like Malorie Blackman pointing out plaster only come in one skin tone- obvious point I has never seen) I am sorry you have to fight so much harder than your white colleagues. I am sorry you and other black booktubers have to kick us up the butt so we remember to be better allies and check ourselves. You might not see the change, it might feel like a drop in the ocean, but from the comments it is clear you have impact more than one person. I am aware of some of these issues, but the way you phrased things, your experience, what should be happening and how we move forward, makes me check my privilege and keep learning how to do better. So thank you. You do make a difference. I found your last point particularly moving especially as you said it felt so personal. It made me tear up with both sadness then joy about the love and appreciation. I now look forward to watching content, with your "all over the place" style (love that) about fun times, amazing author's and celebrating books by Black author's with black joy. Thank you - and apologies fir the essay, but I too struggle with when to stop talking!📚💜

D*mn, I wont lie: the whitewashing/appropriation of "hot girl summer" hurts. Couldnt they even do the bare minimum and quote Megan Thee Stallion as the creator of the movement? This is how the whitewashing/appropriation of "self-care" happened all these decades ago. This is why "cite Black women" is such an important part of social justice. 💔💔💔

Yes, this is my 3rd comment haha, but I had to separate my thoughts. My frustrations with the book community have to start with intentional and unintentional censorship. The beautiful thing about books is that they offer perspective and sometimes understanding. If we aren't to discuss what we took away, how is anyone supposed to learn and change? It feels like dismissal. I'm sure most people are tired of feeling dismissed because I know I am.

I appreciate you and the content you make, Ashley. You inspire, motivate and remind me of how to be a better person. I also love your recommendations of work written by black authors. I'm pretty sure you inspired me to read "Unbound" by Tarana Burke (SO GOOD)! Although I'm not black, I can sympathize a little bit with some of your sentiments when it comes to white viewers/readers/creators/etc. I'm Japanese Canadian and feel the constant push and pull of "whiteness" and "Asian-ness" from family, friends, colleagues, etc., and it's exhausting: the ignorance, the racism, the jokes, all of it - especially when I'm not accepted by Canadian society or Japanese society. I'm still called a foreigner in Japan (even though I have a Japanese passport) and people in Canada still ask me if I can speak English. What frustrates me about the book community is that I don't see myself represented, at least not here on KZbin (Do you happen to know any Asian halfie creators?! I can't find them. Thanks, KZbin algorithm), and I don't see my reading style represented by creators: I'm not interested in YA or fantasy, or sci-fi. I prefer short stories, vignettes, flash/micro fiction, plays and nonfiction...Don't get me wrong: I don't mind watching BookTubers whose reading preferences aren't similar to mine. Those recs encourage me to continuously try out genres that I'm not a big fan of, and once in awhile I end up finding gems! However, part of the reason I consume this content is to find recommendations for texts that I love - something that is rare here. I wish you all the best as you continue to create content, Ashley! You're a staple in my BookTube diet :)
