There are a few jobs where it's used, but it pretty much just gets frustrating because you often need special tools just because it's from the US. Not only that, but it's really unintuitive and inaccurate, and you end up with stuff like 2 inches and 7/13 if you want actual accuracy. It's just absolute garbage when accuracy is required.

Important to realise, for those reading the comments that In America, servers/wait staff do not earn a liveable wage. So their wage is not enough to cover rent and basic necessities. They use tips to supplement their wages. It was also confusing for me to since the rest of the world only tips if they feel it or the service was really great.

The fact that waiter relies on tips for living.......That shouldn't be a customer concern though. If the service is good, then you get the tip. The fact that some waiters think they are obligated to receiving tip always pisses me off. Tipping puts burden on the customers too.

I wanted to say something about when they were talking about tips. We tip in America because the system is shit, waiters/waitresses/busboys often aren’t paid in any other way OTHER than tips. Sometimes it’s their main source of income for that job. So when you come to a diner or something in America, make sure to tip and support their hard work! :)

@@Luuhpan Minimum wage for waiters/waitresses is different "because of tipping." Some places only pay their waiters and waitresses $2 an hour. My friend who worked at a restaurant only made $2.14/hour and had to try and make up the rest of it with tips.
@lowkeylonely4265

@@Luuhpan I work in a restaurant, basically the wait staff sign an agreement to be paid $2-$3 and hour and then we split the tips between the entire staff. You can make good money off of tips if you work often, but if you only have it as a part-time job the money is miniscule.

It’s just an excuse for restaurant owners to underpay their staff and force the customer to make up the deficit. It creates all sorts of problems if 20-30% is expected. If you don’t tip or give too little, the server might give you crap service or spit in your food next time. So you feel you have to tip the expected amount even if the service isn’t great 🙁

As an architecture student, I also had this question for the longest time. It wasn't until I had to do a floor plan for one of my projects that required an ADA-REGULATED bathroom that I found the answer. . .or more like answers. . .now BRACE yourself it is long. 😓 • Easier to Clean: By having a gap at the bottom, bathroom partitions are much easier to clean, as is the whole restroom. You can hose down or even powerwash a restroom that has partitions with gaps at the bottom because the water has somewhere to run even if there’s not a drain in a given stall. • Emergency Access: If someone loses consciousness in a fully enclosed bathroom, it may take hours for someone to notice. If this happens in a stall with a gap at the bottom, the odds are good someone will notice much quicker, which is important in instances where every second can mean the difference between life and death. Instead of having to break down the door, a first responder can crawl through the gap at the bottom of the partition and unlock the door to render help. • Deterrent to Undesirable Behavior: Because people can partially see into a bathroom stall that has a gap at the bottom, this type of partition is a natural deterrent to undesirable behavior, such as someone spray painting the stall with graffiti or seeing four feet instead of two 😎. • More Affordable: Partitions that don’t extend from the floor to the ceiling don’t have to be custom made to fit a room’s exact measurements and they don’t require as many materials to construct. This makes them considerably more affordable. • Better Air Circulation: Better air circulation is one of the top reasons why there are gaps under toilet stalls. While restrooms with this kind of partition may still get a bit stinky from time to time, things would be even more overwhelming in a fully enclosed stall. • Keeps the Line Moving: Having a gap at the base of a partition allows people waiting in line to see if a stall is occupied or vacant. This visibility keeps the line moving and prevents wait times from being any longer than they have to be. When a stall isn’t fully enclosed, people often feel like they have to take care of their business even faster, which also helps keep the line moving. • ADA Compliance: Space is needed to allow for easier maneuverability for patrons in a wheelchair. The gap allows toe space for wheelchair users which allows more room to move within the stalls. 9″ minimum toe space is required per ADA guidelines. • Escape Route: A lock can jam for a wide variety of reasons. If this happens in a stall that has a gap at the bottom, you have an escape route - you can simply crawl out. • Toilet Paper Can Be Shared: If you’ve ever run out of toilet paper and had to ask the person in the stall next to you for a few squares, then you’re already familiar with one of the leading reasons for bathroom partitions not extending to the floor. If you’d run out of toilet paper in an enclosed stall, you may have been caught with your pants down at least figurately!

If you go back far enough, Sumerians. It's why we have 60 minute hours, 60 second minutes, other aspects of time divisible by 60 or 12. It's good for fractions. They used base 60 instead of counting in 10s. The number of feet in a yard/mile also correspond to being divisible easily. Imperial is an old system good for quick fractions in your head. Metric is good, but sometimes involves decimals to figure out so is less useful for quick mental math.

3:33 The larger food portions in America are not bigger because of bigger body proportions. Its the other way around. America's bigger body proportions are because of the bigger food portions. (whether you let it sit and become overweight, or if you work out and turn it to muscle) And the bigger food portions are a combination of abundant and cheap food supply, and a corporate incentive to cater to customer desire (because it makes more money) rather than customer health. At least historically. Some places are getting better by serving healthier foods, but the corporations still make more money selling large portions en-mass.

The date thing is just strange to be honest. Day, month, year makes sense, and so does the reverse. But month, day, year?
@MrMo0nlight
@MrMo0nlight 4 жыл бұрын
DD/MM/YYYY is a little better than MM/DD/YYYY but in reality only YYYY/MM/DD makes sense. The largest timescale should always come first. For example my music collection is dated that way, and when i sort my list by date it is sorted perfectly chronologically. If I had dated it Day first then the top of the list might have something from the 2010's because it was released on the 1st of any given month, and the bottom might have something from the 60's because it was released on the 31st of any given month.
@CottidaeSEA
@CottidaeSEA 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrMo0nlight It depends entirely on how you sort things. When sorting, it's almost always better to sort by the one that changes the least frequently, which is the year in this case. That way you can sort into groups and further sort them afterward. Although if you sort it in a computer program with something like Java, you can simply sort by number, as the date is saved as a number that doesn't have anything to do with the formatting. Programmer here by the way, so I have a hard time not making comparisons since it's what I do on a regular basis.
@MrMo0nlight
@MrMo0nlight 4 жыл бұрын
@@CottidaeSEA But if you go year month day the method isn't even a concern. Even a text string will sort correctly. You could even argue that the year should come first because it's the most important piece of data. If I told you I was born on July 7th it wouldn't mean much, but if I told you I was born in 1935 that might tell you a lot about me.

@@MrMo0nlight Year first would be helpful for historical records(although with digital records, it'd rarely matter), but in day to day use the year would be pretty irrelevant. eg: appointments, bookings, when work is complted, dates displayed on pcs, phones, etc. I regularly check the date for todays date, but not for the month or year.

I sat on the floor of the stall writhing in pain for a long while before a student finally wondered why someone was sitting on the floor crying. She kept asking if I were okay but by that point I was in so much I could barely speak. So she looked through the crack to see what was going on and when she finally saw me she ran to get help. If she hadn't been able to look through the gap it would've delayed her reaction time even moreso OR she probably wouldn't even have gotten help at all. Especially considering that so many other students came in and out before her and didn't bother trying to help. That gap isn't always a good thing but it can definitely save a life. I would know.

Alex as a US citizen maybe do some research if you really want to be enlightened. Simply put it's because until the digital era we wrote out pretty much all dates as "April 17, 2020" it was pretty much never abbreviated to 5/17/2020 until computers and what not started showing up. As a side note the United Kingdom are the ones who started this date format not the USA, but since we were on the other side of the pond we just never assimilated to the European format. As a second side note; the US military, China, Japan, and Korean nations usually use YYYY/MM/DD which is actually the format set by the International Standardization Organisation. The story behind metric is a little more interesting, the short answer is that pirates yes pirates stopped the US from changing by capturing and killing the teacher that was supposed to come to the USA to teach and bring the metric scaling and measurements. By time metric finally made it's way to the US we were so ingrained with the imperial system that we got from Britain that it would literally cost us billions of US$ to make the change and we wouldn't receive any benefits from doing it so we said fuck it and stayed with what we know.

That means in that hour you made $19.15 an hour. If you take a family out your bill might be $50-75. A 20% tip would be $10-15 for a SINGLE table. The other thing is that bad servers will get bad tips and stop being servers.

Really? Not saying bad about your country but just some of my opinion that if I’m Korean American, I may not be proud to be KOREAN. ( I’m a locally born Taiwanese by the way. ) When I watch some Kpop stuff or Korean movies, those things like the honorifics and the age system which are deeply rooted in Korean culture really make people get stressed. It’s hard to imagine even for me as a Taiwanese that both of our countries are affected by Confucius culture.

I was scrolling for a comment on this. What’s probably more confusing for non-Americans is that we also don’t measure height with just one unit of measure. That we would never say we are 5.7 feet but rather 5’9” (5 feet, 9 inches). And the reason that we express height this way comes back to the fact that Imperial is not base 10. It’s confusing for us to use a decimal when it takes 12 of the smaller unit to get to the larger unit. 😆

After watching all these videos I've come to a conclusion... Me and Ho Seung are too similar, when it comes to food😂😂. Also, tipping is a must, because our waiters/waitresses dont get paid enough. If someone does a great job I've given $15-20 t tips, or I'll sneak to my fav waiter/waitress when it's a big party being served so they don't have to share. They work too hard and with different personalities everyday to be paid so low and only rely on tips to survive.

Important to note: servers in America, at least where I've worked, don't usually make more than 2-4$ an hour. Restaurants are actively allowed to pay far below minimum wage because it's expected that customers tip. It's definitely not a good thing, but it's the way things work. On particularly slow days, I've lost money on a shift because of the cost of gas getting me to and from work.

1) McDonald's changed their sizes many years ago (at least where I live). Their current "large" is their old "medium." They don't have those big cups anymore :( 2) Americans do MM/DD/YYYY because that is how it is spoken. When we speak, we say "December 25th, 2019." We don't say "2019 December 25th" and generally not "The 25th of December, 2019," though that is still accurate. So our method makes sense. 3) ALL schools in the United States teach both metric and imperial/English systems. We do/should know both.

The reason the American dates are like that is because that's the order you would flip through a calendar for. Say, April 19th 2020. You'd find April and then you'd find the 19th. The year is last because it doesn't really matter when you're flipping through a calendar since of course it'd be the correct year.

Our country being a former US Territory have adapted most of what was mentioned here. Like the format of Dates (Month Day Year), the tipping culture (it's not as bad as it is in the US, we are not culturally obliged to pay certain percentages. Just put whatever) etc. The weird thing is that we use both Metric and imperial system. It depends on what you are trying to measure. Distances are measured in meters except length of things (textiles etc) they are measured in imperial system (yards, inches). Ice creams are sold in Gallons/pints and drinks in fluid ounces but the rest of liquid items are in Liters, solids in metric grams. Swimming pools are measured in meters but the depth is asked in feet (we know its a 25 meter pool but it is 6 feet deep). Thats because height and weight of people are commonly measured in feet and pounds and distaces are in meters. Filipinos are a confused bunch 😂
