Same with mine. A student who was a junior or senior at the time had crashed into the back of our bus and surprisingly no one felt the impact at all. Her car was totaled for sure (thank goodness she was fine although a bit shocked) And even then they had blocked off that main part of the road and caused all that traffic till they brought a new bus in and switched all of the kids on to it. I gotta give the US credit with their transportation system. It’s pretty good. What with all the yearly training of telling kids where to evacuate during an emergency and how strong those buses actually are. Im not surprised over how some might find it awesome.
@nicolivoldkif90964 жыл бұрын
School busses are built fairly similar to semi tractors, share many of the parts too. So any impact to the front or back is going to hit the bumper which is attached to two heavy gauge U-shaped steel rails that by themselves may weigh more then a small car.

@@faithfullyfaith199 That idea was based on them only testing for head on collisions way back. They've since started testing t-bones, rollovers, and so forth and realized that seatbelts are still probably a better way to go because the padded seat does little to nothing if force of impact or gravity throws kids sideways into the other kids or the metal wall, or upward into the metal ceiling. In fact there was a rollover of a school bus in the area here that would have been MUCH worse if the kids had not been in a newer bus and wearing seatbelts. It became a requirement in my state to have all schoolbuses fitted with seatbelts a few years ago because of the new tests (and some unfortunate school bus accidents). Because of that, most of those kids were wearing seatbelts and walked away without serious injury.

At my school, the back of the bus was where everyone wanted to sit. The seats in the back are behind the rear tires so when you hit a bump or pothole you would get launched into the roof and feel momentary weightlessness.

@@logancapes ik what you mean... i used to love sitting in the last seat too until i reached class 6. Turns out argueing to stay in the last seat wasn't half as fun as sitting in the front with people you get along with and enjoy talking to. Found that out cuz in my school till class 5, students go home at 3 and from 6, at 4 so as a 4th and 5th grader you had more chances of winning the argument cuz the driver would make younger ones sit front, from 6, the driver won't care where you sit as long as you dont move around too too too much. In 6th grade, i was kinda nervous to try to sit at the back because atleast 7 busses go from my busstop and i decided to go with a random bus that went from my stop, instead of going from the one i was assigned to. I do not regret the bus i chose because the students the conductor and the driver were amazing. The people i find the closest to me, i met them in that exact bus.

@@yanc4237 Oh yeah, I guess I stopped sitting in the back because of people too. Except in my case, when I made it to middle school and rode the bus with the middle and high schoolers, the ones that sat in the back were scary to me haha so I started riding up front (the elementary school started 1 hour early to reduce traffic at the schools). I didn't make any friends on that bus, unfortunately. I was scared of some of those older kids all through school, and would still be scared of them today probably. I was so scared of them that I actually started walking a mile to and from school everyday. This included walking past a trailer park with loose territorial dogs that would snap at me if I didn't act like I was prepared to defend myself (yell, kick, lower stance real quick to make them flinch, etc). Thank god my sister is 4 years older and was able to drive me to school after 2-3 years of that haha. I also find it interesting that you got to choose which bus to ride. I grew up in a city with a population of about 1800 (population density ~ 57 per square mile). There were no bus stops, buses would pick you up from your drive way. The bus you rode was the bus that would drive by your house. There were only 5 busses, and some of them had routes that went as far as 15 miles away from the school.
@yanc42374 жыл бұрын
@@logancapes oh it's not actually allowed to change busses. But some school rules are meant to be broken i guess😅 The thing is the school i attend is one of the biggest if not the biggest school in my country so its kinda to be expected. And we have bus stops becuz the contry i live in is a small country which isn't very managed at parts so there is the main road, but the houses are all over the places so there are small roads where you can't drive busses so we have our house at one place and bus stop a bit further. In my case my bus stop is about 5 minutes away from my house. A little fun fact: my school officially has over a hundred busses just for 1 trip. As in like i mentioned before, playgroup to grade 5 go home at 3pm, grade 6 to 10 at 4pm, then there is a group that go back at 6 in summer and 5 in winter, both playgroup to grade 5 group and grade 6 to 10 group have a hundred busses at minimum everyday. Little fact: the black lines on buses serve a dual purpose. They mark where floor, seat level, and “top” of seats are in the bus so if there is an accident the firefighters know where to cut without injuring occupants. Also those lines are reinforced with steel so it marks the “safest” area in the bus. There are rivets and other “markers” along the length of the bus to designate the best place for first responders like fire fighters to cut to gain access to interior.

I'm old so we had lockers. We were able to go off school ground for lunch or stay on campus. Most schools you ignore people because you only have like 5 minutes to rush across campus, grab your books and head to your next class. I went to several schools since my dad was in the military. My last school was divided like the movie Breakfast Club, but in none of the schools do I remember there being 1 girl more popular than the rest. ASB and Cheerleaders in all schools were supposed to be like the top students. But I never saw smart ASB students desire to be Cheerleaders. A memorable event was this cheerleader was walking and her skirt was stuck in the panties. Many kids just walked by her looked and chuckled. Finally someone advised her. I think so many movies depict them being top tier *itches, that many students automatically didn't like the cheerleaders.

My first high school had lockers, but I never could bring myself to try using it. Learning the combo was a pain, and my short legs turned that campus into a mini marathon. Eventually, I got some medical allowances despite not technically falling in the medical definition of dwarfism (I'm about one inch above the maximum height). Yeah, high school dramas are pretty inaccurate to most high schools. There's absolutely the occasional wild and crazy story from some real high schools, but it's far from the norm. 3:25 - What? Who the hell told you that? School buses are not designed by armored vehicle manufacturers. In the US, school buses are (mostly) second-stage built by up-fitters who buy Class 6 (or 7) medium duty truck rolling chassis frames and then put a passenger box on the frame. The reason they're so safe for children is because they're basically Class 6 (or 7) medium duty trucks and thus weigh anywhere from 13000 to 16000 lbs, empty, with frames rated for up to 45000 lbs. That means a whole lot of thick, heavy steel holding up the bus body, sitting on top of the frame. No car, pickup or SUV on the road poses any real threat to the yellow behemoths.

I still remember the day my moms car rolled into the schoolbus I was on and she hit her head and was bleeding. It was so scary and I yelled out Omma! While yelling let me out my mom is hurt at the driver. She’s ok but has a tiny crack on the skull and back pain from the force. Crazy scary morning

It's not just the financial fine that stops the VAST majority of people from ignoring a stopped school buses sign and flashing lights. Tradition and the POINTS on your license are a major factor. I've seen people who wouldn't call in a burning house go through great lengths to notify the police when someone blows by a loading/offloading school bus. As well as a few beat downs administered.....

As an American I didn’t know our busses were built by armored vehicle companies. However I believe they should put seatbelts back into the school busses. When I was in high school (in Texas) I went on a volunteer “field trip” with one of my classes and on the way back a car cut off the bus and the driver of the bus had to break HARD to avoid rear-ending the car. As a result, several students including me, slammed into the back of the seats in front of us and fell onto the floor. Luckily no one was seriously injured but it could’ve been prevented if seatbelts weren’t removed from busses...

Good to know that American school buses are well built to protect the students. It's also great they have driving rules for other drivers when they are around school buses bc if there is an accident and a student is hurt or killed, the lawsuit against whoever caused the accident is very serious and very expensive.
@AlexMart94 жыл бұрын
Just wait till they realize that none of the protection matters when it comes to a collision cause there are no seatbelts and once your taller than the seats when you are sitting they also become dangerous🤷♀️🤷♀️😂😂😂 and in the 5 year of me riding a bus I have encountered 3 crazy drivers

@nerasomnia4 жыл бұрын
I was told that buses don’t need seatbelts because of how well the buses resist collisions.
@AlexMart94 жыл бұрын
@@nerasomnia though they may be good at resisting collisions it isn't always a guaranteed, and like I said in the few year of me riding a school bus there was one bus driver that actually almost hydroplaned into a ditch thankfully she didn't, after that she was slightly more careful, but think about if it had hydroplaned into the ditch, it would not have been safe at all + the busses have a 2 roof exit, a back exit, and side exits, which means they want us to know where to go incase the bus does crash and/or rolls over and wants us to go to said places and escapse right after practically flying around, and don't let those picture on the screen fool you if you search school bus crashes many of them are busses seem to be in some sort of ditch, although the initial cause might have not been the ditch, people don't tend to process many things when in a state of shock so many of the riders would be in shock at first and then have the reaction their body tells them, all logic tends to go out the window for some for others not at all, it all depends on the person and their age.

The buses are very tough! We had an SUV try to pass us on the right curb while our bus was making a right & it felt like a speed bump, but the car was smashed. The SUV driver was arrested for dangerous driving.

I've gone on a bus from age 8 to 18 and never knew they were made by tank manufacturers. No wonder they are so damn expensive. Hefty fine is nothing compared to the amount your car insurance will have to pay. If its very bad you'll not only get a fine but also lose your license and you might serve jail time if ANYTHING is wrong with your record.

We had a rollover of a school bus near where my mother lives and only three people with major injuries because it was designed with seatbelts and didn't crumple in the wreck. This in a bus that was completely full. I was driving to the next town over when I saw all the police, ambulances and so forth heading out towards the place right down the road where my mother lived.

Don't forget cars nowadays are designed to break away in the event of a crash.
@wordforger3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's all about transfer of energy/forces. The crumpling slows the impact. Of course the tradeoff is that if a car designed to crumple meets one that is not, it can get really ugly.

Most of our schools are in residential areas where the speed limit on many of the streets is 25 mph. Speed limits on faster streets that schools may be on are lowered in the morning and afternoon when children go to and from school. At least in California. Bad thing is school buses and railroad tracks. School buses in many states are required to stop before crossing. Every so often they stall when put into first gear to continue. Many tragic accidents over many decades.

American school busses usually have 20 seats that can fit 2 or even 3 students to a seat. So at least 40 students at any given point (pre covid of course) the buses naturally are bigger and bulkier to accomodate all the passengers. They also have stop signs that fold out when the doors are open for students boarding or getting off, as often times they would have to cross the street. The reason they are yellow, is because many cautionary road signs are also yellow and even reflective so you cant not see them. Even at night. They will also have numerous reflectors that also helps night time visibility. And highschool students will typically be able to get their drivers licenses at around 16-17 or at least their learners permit. This will allow them to commute to and from school, extra cirriculars, and jobs, since you can legally get most entry level jobs at 16. Amd depending on the students course of study and if they have parental consent work/school release papers, most highschool student for thier junior and senior years of highschool only attend classes for half the day.

Now matter how safe on the outside the bus is, it doesn’t make up for how cramped it is inside. All four years of high school half of the bus was at least three to a seat, with no seatbelts. I’m just glad I didn’t live in a major city that would have to take a highway to get home. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE BROKEN AC, it felt like every damn bus had a broken ax unit. AND I LIVE IN TEXASSSSSS it was hot as hell.

I'm in 8th grade and from America for context. I rode the bus up until 4th grade. The 4th and 5th graders are in a different building on a different street. They deemed me "too close to the school" for a bus route and still did when I started at the middle school I'm at currently so now my dad just drives me.

School buses are definitely much stronger in the last couple decades here in the US. After many horrific bus crashes that saw heavy loss of life, busses started being made sturdier. Now, if busses are crashed, while there may be injuries, death doesn’t happen often. The busses are given right of way on the road, and are not to be passed. At railroad crossings, they stop and open the doors to listen for trains. At least on busses here in KY, they’ve started equipping the bus stop sign with cameras, and if someone passes while the sign is out, their license plate WILL be recorded for them to be tracked down by police later. Many school bus crashes these days are actually caused by the bus drivers themselves being exhausted. There is a shortage of bus drivers, leaving many to drive extra long routes or even multiple routes in a school day.

In my area everyone hates getting stuck behind school buses due to their constant stops, but for almost everyone this amounts to "this sucks" and perhaps some minor grumbling nothing more. It is rare (relative to the amount of buses) to see or hear of people so much as passing one that is picking up students. Even if we absolutely hate being behind them, we still respect them.... either due to the fact that its a bus for students, or due to the fines involved. Also make no mistake, the second a school bus driver sees someone pass them when their lights are on or whatnot, they are on their radio calling in the license plate. One other thing that I have noticed personally over the years is that when a bus driver knows that there is a huge line of traffic behind them, it is not uncommon for them to pull to the side of the road and let traffic pass. I suspect that this happens around me due to the fact that I live in a city of only 35k people and there is only one other city in the county (and it only has 25k people). I imagine this is not something one would witness in large or huge cities.
