I felt burned by how much money I spent on world of tanks and hearthstone back in the day. I don't plan on engaging with these sorts of practice anymore all my life. Been playing games like Supreme Commander: Forged Alliances Forever. Beyond all Reason. Helldivers 2 (which has been remarkably restrained on the topic of poor behaviour for a live service title), Cosmoteer (a great indie title on steam), and many other lesser indie titles. Who cares what the majority does Bluedrake? Let them all enjoy their mediocre games while the rest of us find better more fulfilling things to spend our time on.

I only really get excited about indie games since it's gonna be likely we are gonna get offline/community dedicated server support. For me, always online games are the most frustrating part of this new age of gaming. I'm someone who rarely upgrades my PC and I have to make budget choices for parts. That means I'm often lagging behind in terms of what my PC can handle well. I would love if games I purchased can still be played several years from now, when I know I'll have a better system and I'll be able to enjoy them more. But with the trend of always online games it's unclear for how long I'll be able to play that game.

@htmn_23 ай бұрын
There is the "anti" version of this too. Something that you can play now, will eventually be unplayable in 4-5 years if you upgrade, being it the OS or the rig. Even in the "best technological time" there are some lockups that do limit the hardware/software performance and its implementation. lockups that are imbeded in the game engine itself so the best of the best could run it perfectly, but go use some old tech (as one budget build could have) or some future tech (released just year later) and you have a brick that can do shit and nothing more. "No refunds" and "F you" is all you will get from the publishers/developers if the fault is either "just your hardware" or "just your OS". The whole industry (hardware and software one) has this one goal - to "F you" again and again for your money till you are dead or your "privilege" is outdated.

It's the world in general, not just gaming. Every company wants to grab you and shake you upside down for every cent you have and when they are finished they then want to bleed you dry too. Recent examples off the top of my head? That Pelatin treamill thing that ended up hurting or killing someone, apparently in order for it not to do that you needed to pay a subscription. BMW some time back, want heated seats? You'll need to subscribe. I think BMW recently stuck again, something to do with needing a subscription for your headlight features. Some years back, Intel planning to release a "forever CPU", where they lock it down and you pay for bits of it to be unlocked. What about Microsoft, they want you to have a terminal and run your desktop and OS from their cloud servers. They buy so many game companies, time and time again, oh, we won't fire anyone, we promise, BAM! 15,000 employees from such and such laid off ~1 month after acquisition. Google? Now no longer "allegedly" anti-competitive, but absolutely legally so. Game companies, changing authenticity for pandering, microtransactions, DRM, always online crap. How's our awesome digital security going? Hacking leaks everywhere. CrowdStrike and similar events. Everything being made more and more poorer quality and nothing lasting, planned obsolescence on the ever rise. Movies are getting ruined. TV is getting ruined. Games are getting ruined. Tonnes of these companies are all American, can't your pathetic Government do something already? I was an atheist. I looked around the planet and was like, nah, this isn't it. Maybe religion is it. This man made rubbish is utter junk and why did I ever place any hope of any enjoyment what so ever in any of the crap any of us have ever invented? I played Anomaly for a while & had a lot of fun with that. I also bought & started playing Vintage Story. We have to vote with our wallet, but we also need to understand the value of engagement! Like you said, massive review bombs just seem to drive sales even higher. We need to WALK AWAY from industry practices that clearly don't serve us well & look toward other opportunities! We need to talk about the values we uphold & live according to those values. I have absolutely been voting with my wallet AND with my time/engagement, and I've been talking to people about it whenever it comes up. No gameplay experience is worth living in a world where abusive, predatory practices are so extravagantly rewarded & I refuse to believe that there's nothing we can do about it. I walked away from a game I absolutely loved (one of my favorites of all time) because of some trashy people who chose to act in a predatory, abusive manner toward their players & I don't regret it at all. @Bluedrake42, What advice would you give to the two young developers behind the game Bodycam, considering how disruptive the concept of their game is and that, even in early access and with so many issues, it has already sold more than 700,000 units? Am I wrong to think that we are looking at something with huge potential that could fail due to the inexperience of the two guys behind Reissad Studios?
@Bluedrake423 ай бұрын
I personally didn't have a good experience with that studio. Frankly, I consider Bodycam to be an example of how far things have seemingly regressed, even in the indie space. - Game is online only. - Game consists almost entirely of marketplace assets, not created by that team. - Game concept is ripped from another studio, capitalizing on a social media trend that didn't originate from Reissad. - Game is full priced, earning an absurdly disproportionate amount of money compared to the cost of developing the project. - Everyone still purchased the game and almost every social media influencer who received a free Steam key to the game endorsed it. A few years ago, this exact same game would have been condemned. However, for whatever reason... that mentality has shifted completely. The studio behind Bodycam hasn't done anything illegal, but as far as the growing trend of studios pump and dumping high-priced low-effort content that copies ideas from social media trends... it is a prime example of how that issue has recently reached an extreme.

As with so many topics these days, content creators really should be using other platforms aswell, such as Rumble, Bitchute, Locals, Minds, etc. Relying solely on YT is a terrible idea, has been for some time, ie. don't hold all one's eggs in a single basket. A common approach is to utilise multiple platforms, but upload some stuff that only appears on non-YT sites, in order to help them grow. Some rely increasingly on merch of various kinds, others on ad-reads, etc. Btw, my even mentioning Rumble in a post means this comment is likely to be deleted by YT, that's how bad it is now. Cool to hear about your Masters acceptance! Best wishes for that! Way back I had considered returning to uni to do an MPhil (then later maybe a PhD), as it happens also in AI (though it was a very different field back then, the early 2000s), but in the end I decided not to because of the way academia was changing, becoming riddled with politics and wasteful spending. Regardless, I hope your studies work out well. There's certainly a lot of potential for AI to be genuinely benefical in games (I was interested in persistent NPCs that could "learn" in some manner), but atm AI is an overhyped nightmare in so many ways, pushed more for commercial exploitation and the erosion of civil liberties. As with so many new tools, it's easier to use it in bad ways to make a quick buck or acquire more power. Maybe things will change for the better in the future, who knows. Alas a lot of it is tied up with wider issues, especially collectivist politics.

If you want an online multiplayer project that has to keep servers running to survive for a long time it NEEDS to have some sort of microtransactions and i am happy to see games with skins for real money because when i see that i can rest assured that this game will have a long life unlike Starbase as a good example of a not free to play game that could not keep it running because they relied only on initial game purchases which was very stupid tbh. And Once Human as an example of a PERFECT microtransactions policy ( cosmetic items only that won't affect your performance ) and it can stay free to play and live for a long time because 1) there's a financial support for the game ( cosmetics ) 2) you can go crazy with cosmetics in a relatively short time and low effort ( compared to DLCs or new vehicle/player models ) so it'll be easy to add content so that people want to buy more. While other games do it completely wrong and die off very fast. TLDR: Microtransactions in games are good when done right, ensuring long life of a game.

My last mistake was Diablo 4. I was already losing trust in many studios; my last Battlefield was Bad Company 2, and since then, I don’t even watch EA game trailers anymore. I completely agree with you, but I wouldn’t be as negative because I believe we’ve already reached the turning point. When I buy a game, I see it as a vote, like political activism-I’m not just buying the game itself; I’m also buying the ideology, the long-term vision of the developers. And watching your latest video where you talk about bipods, weapon balance based on their ability to rest on certain surfaces, I thought, ‘WOW, are there still people who care about game design and just want to make good games? I should give them my money to empower their project.’ The big studios had too much of a head start, and their infinite marketing budgets have tanked way too many mistakes, but that budget isn’t infinite, and I’m seeing a lot of small projects starting to directly compete with the big fish. BattleBit is the perfect example. Yes, maybe players forgive too easily, but this game proves that the only thing everyone is really waiting for is a good game.

IMO. the Gaming Industry is in its death throes, and they're milking and actively addicting as many customers as they can. Unless there's legislation or some other major 'event' that prevents it, the mass-proliferation of AI/MI is going to allow individuals to build new and/or radically modify existing games.

You can post stuff about AI here for sure. From what i have heard AI is not as hot rn, investors are realizing that AI doesn't make as much money as they thought.
@Bluedrake423 ай бұрын
I think the reason AI isn't making investors money is because of all the other companies (like Facebook) that just completely kneecapped the entire industry by releasing their models as free and open source. I don't think Wall Street expected that. I, however, am very happy about this. AI may not be making investors money, but I think that is a good thing... because AI is still absolutely helping other people. I wouldn't measure how impactful AI has been by how much money investors are making off of it. Investors not getting a return just means they failed to exploit AI and force people to pay more money than they should for it. That's a good thing in my opinion though.
@Ciborg0853 ай бұрын
@@Bluedrake42 I mentioned investors because it seems that developing some of this AI models isn't cheap, looking by how rich Nvidia is becoming by selling their chips. But yea i agree that models becoming free and open source is a good thing.

regarding the predatory practices of microtransactions its ultimately up to the people and their wallets. people need to be more disciplined and less materialistic when it comes to silly skins and senseless purchases. vote with your wallet. people will learn, but they clearly aren't mature enough nor respect their wallets and hard earned cash (or moms credit card)

If tripple A gaming keeps going on their trend theyll end up defunct anyways, giant corpos NEED all their games to apply to a wide audience which will make the masses eyes glaze over eventually because you can only sustain copy/paste games for so long (games like cod), theyll go to indie devs IMO. btw 34m isn't a big deal if on 1.5x speed.

I stopped buying new games especially the woke agenda pushing games. I actively search for smaller indy games and older games that go on sale. I have been screaming about all of these issues and blows my mind that gamers are either this dumb, easily manipulated, lazy, or of short attention spans that want ez mode. Again, just blows my mind. On a side note: I have always streamed and played what I want, when I want. I have no desire to be content creator famous seeing what happens to so many in the long run. I also stopped streaming to the KILA - Killers in Lethal Alliance YT and Facebook channels in fear of some live-stream getting the entire channel yeeted for wrong think which would delete decades of Competitive Melee gaming and gaming history. I am already perma banned from Twitch and I say good riddings. So now, I only stream on Rumble, Dlive, and Kick. The point I am making here is for you to do you. Be honest to yourself and what you create and support. You will find the audience you need instead of the audience you want. The audience you want or think you want is simply not worth bending the knee.

I think that for triple A games not for indie developers. I believe you'll be able to make triple A like games from your house and play with friends regardless of monopoly patents and ect. This is due to ai and all you need is to purchase a powerful pc or laptop and have a bit of creativity or a KZbin diy.

I take it Bluedrake hasn't heard about the initiatives started by Ross Scott of the Accursed Farms KZbin channel. He's trying to use legal processes to start a conversation amongst EU lawmakers concerning some of these trends you've mentioned in the gaming industry. It doesn't have anything to do with the KZbin content creation side of things though.

I will own nothing and be happy soon, I've made progress towards this very idea Hunting, camping, survival skills, hiking, fishing, gardening Cheaper than technology. Less stressful than being on today's technology. More rewarding too. Keeps ya healthy and out in nature. Plants don't f*** me. Plants don't exploit me. Plants don't require an always online connection. Plants don't require DRM. You can even "pirate" a plant, via propagation and it's free and moral, plants don't give me excuses. Plants don't require a subscription. Plants have no adverts on them. Plants don't track my data. Plants don't get my data stolen. That's it, I will soon replace all people..... with plants. I suggest we all do the same; would help with inflation too; everyone growing their own gardens etc. I can dream, keep arguing and complaining, seems to be the only thing us humans "achieve" these days besides a whole bunch of war and bloodshed.

isnt 'voting with the wallet' completely contradictory to the existence of Monopolies?
@Bluedrake423 ай бұрын
At this point the only real way to vote against these trends with your wallet would be to abstain from buying anything at all… because yes, the monopolies more or less own everything now. I understand that not purchasing anything is unrealistic for most people, which is why I said this issue is mostly inevitable. So yes, that’s the primary reason for my shift.

The game is looking super crispy but if it’s going to lead the movement you and all of us want, i always figured it was going to happen after the game was fully ‘done’ to where even total casuals see it and want to jump in. Gotta make the competition jealous. I was kinda expecting this video at some point and bar the financial difficulties it’s all super exciting. Congrats on the masters course.

I don't mind that model just because I have my own head on shoulders to filter out games which I like, which sucks money from wallet and games which are basically a scam from a get-go (Ubi, EA, all the major companies). I still play Enemy Territory (Legacy edition, made by fans - for fans), I still play PoE, I still play RtCW multiplayer. I have figured out games I really LIKE and ENJOY, and keep playing them, supporting them with occasional micro-transactions and/or donations to those who keep the history alive. I am not interested in graphics and hype. I am interested in investing MY time in something I enjoy and like.
