The EU did a big mistake when refused to include turkey. As predicted by many experts, as they cant trust EU anymore, turkey turned to other side... they forgot one of thé very first goal of the EU : maintaining peace and stability by including people into a big common project...

There are serious misunderstandings about the arrests. I don’t support him. I actually hate him as a Turkish citizen. But the arrests happened after the failed military coup attempt. All those generals, judges, prosecuters are members of the Gulen movement which is an Islamic group acting against our constitution. Fetullah Gulen is leader of the group and he is living in Pennslyvania since 1999. He never came Turkey even when there were no charges against him because he knew he could’t be safe here. Their members infiltrated the army, education system, Turkish law members (police,judges,prosecuters) etc. for 30+ years. Turkish seculars has always been opposing side to them. In 2013, investigations began against the group. After that, they needed to move and get rid of these investigations. In 2016, a part of Turkish army affiliated with the terrosit Gulen movement tried a military coup against the goverment and they failed. After that, Gulenists are rapidly arrested. Major part of Turkish people supported these acts because the danger was clear all the time. Just because Gulenist movement is Islamic movement, Turkish conservatives were OK to them for some time. After the coup attempt, seculars and convervatives united against gulen movement and supported the things happed at that time.

To clarify some things: - This is a bit from a comedy show that makes political satire. If you want an organic and unbiased analysis of the Turkish recent events and upcoming referendum, you have to educate yourself by reading articles from *multiple* *reliable* sources of information, like journals. - Being approved by the majority of your people doesn't save you from being a dictator. Dictators are political leaders that hold an *extraordinary* amount of *personal* power without any *restriction* to it. The fact that someone else in a different place and/or a different time is/was a dictator doesn't justify your support towards dictatorship, because two wrongs don't make a right. - Some of you, Turkish friends, might dislike the international interest towards the upcoming referendum. It's understandable: that is *your* country and you are the only ones who have a say on the matter. Anyways, you have to realize that we've been living for at least 100 years in a world where all countries are connected with each other through political and economical ties. Important political events, like the upcoming referendum, inevitably influence those connections, changing the way we relate with each other and thus shaping the entire world (for better or worse). - Lastly, allow me to give you a small advice. It doesn't matter whether you approve Erdogan's presidency or not: when you change a rule, that rule is changed for *everyone*. So please, before voting, ask yourself this simple question: can I really trust *anyone* with all this power?

Using democracy to gain powers is not dictatorship. The vote will just mean that the president position will no longer be a ceremonial one. Just like the US, Turkey will have a president as the head of state and he will have a vice president as second in command. It's not a bad thing. Erdogan after all, transformed Turkey from a poor third world country, to a powerhouse.

But that is not the enemy image they want to create. They are just puppets thinking they are always on the right side of things. While having no control of the decisions their countrys make. Like going to war and killing millions of innocent people. Still they feel no remorse and do nothing to stop the mad that is leading their own country. This critisizm comes from a country that is defending those in power who think water is no human right. Their wealth comes only from the bleeding of others. Their own government doesnt even give a shit about their people. In America the people get poorer and poorer and they cant even come together and choose a proper leader. I mean TRUMP? REally?
@mah5298

+Cakal114 Exactly. I think Americans really don't have the right to talk about Turkey after electing Trump. The man out right said he wants to take the oil, he said that the US should target civilians to kill the families of terrorists, wanted to ban an entire religion, and then promised more and more war. Yet he still gets elected. Erdogan wants the vote of the people so that the president position is no longer a figure head position, yet everyone in the US is losing their minds and screaming "DICTATORSHIP!".

Cakal114 Ah guess what, who brought the money in your country...ah yes well it looks like those dirty Westerners were it. Huge investment projects like building dams to gain electricity in rural areas, lendind loads of money to the government and entrepreneurs and cooperatimg with local authorities have helped to create the modern picture of Turkey. But while Erdogan is dismantlimg judges and ruining your democratic constituitional base to provide a ,,checks and balance" system investors started to drop their investment projects and loans, which followed in a steadily decrease of production, what has finally lead us to todays circumstances, where hyperinflation of your currency, and therefore devaluation of your wealth, seems inavitable, also because Erdogan refuses to govern the central bank itself independantly, your economy is on the dip of a collaps. Essentialy also the part that your government is flooding the market with state loans to keep your markets running syntheticly (which has lead to state owned lenders being the biggest in the country), will one day, when a depth crisis will kick, lead to a country wide recession of your economy. But hey he's still the greatest president your country has ever seen....

Well, to retain a democracy you need state intervention and regulation in the market. You need a considerable majority of educated people who won't make stupid decisions based on how gullible they are. You need proper secularism, so that rationale outweighs medieval religious convictions. You need near-100% transparency. You need a reliable and free press. You need anti-corruption measures. As it turns out, most countries do not have this, and therefore authoritarians are free to step in and hijack the system. To those who vote for them, it seems like a blessing from above - To the educated and sensible people, it's a horror-show beyond belief.

the lot of you are missing my point. I am criticizing the nature of democracy. democracy is a farce. it is the illusion of power to rule being shared. the reality is, the people are not fit to rule nor are many of the people who inherit their station through tyranny or birthright. I am more inclined to support a lotto based system for picking rulers. Everyone has a chance. You cannot buy your way into politics. you cant win through demagoguery or any type of campaigning. you cant win through campaign contributions. the elitists dont have an advantage. the wealthy and the privileged dont have an advantage. big business does not decide who will represent the people. Leave it to chance. fix the odds in the entire nation's favor and make sure we dont end up with incompetent idiots in charge by actually taking care of the people: 1)proper education... 2) great health care (especially for mental health)... 3) guaranteed basic standard of living... ...for everyone

When you talk about imprisoned people then also speak about the context; there was a military coup where more then 200 civilians died and the people accountable for this undemocratic action are indeed jailed as it should be, and the coup leader is in pensylvania being protected by your country, how democratic. And yes there are over 3 million refugees in Turkey and Turkey did spend over 25 billion euro on them. Now Erdogan is guilty because he asked europe to respect their part of the refugee deal (which was paying 6 billion euros to companies who give aid to the refugees)? Trevor I always loved watching your show but please present the facts as they are and do some more research before presenting Turkey like this.

I can understand the Turkish viewers who disliked this program. I usually like Trevor but I didn´t like this segment either, I thought it was really superficial. I am German and I am trying to understand what goes on in Turkey. If Turks want to give Erdogan the presidential powers he asks for, they will. It is hard to understand a country´s politics from outside. But allow me to say that I think that power corrupts people which is why no one should be given absolute power. There should always be checks and balances. I believe this is true for the US - where the checks and balances seem to work -, for Poland - where the goverment seems able to dismantle them - and for Turkey, where the people will have a chance to decide whether they want these checks and balances or not. Two more things: Firsty, I believe that there was a coup in Turkey, but I don´t believe that all the journalists, politicians, judges, police officers, teachers... who were now jailed or removed from office were a part of it. President Erdogan already rules in a pretty authoritarian way, even now. Secondly, I have read up on the referendum and the proposed changes to the constitution and I think the fears that it will lead to an even more authoritarian ruler are not unfounded. Potential dictators always say that the will of the people should be absolute, that if a majority decides to give all power to one man then this should be accepted. But a government without any limitations is bound to disregard the rights of (some) citizens - who would be able to hold it to account? Please forgive me for voicing my position as an outsider, but I think the people of the world are connected in many ways and we share the same dreams of freedom, equality, human rights. What happens in Turkey matters to us, same as what happens in the US or in Britain. I wish the Turkish people all the best for their decision! Let me add one more thing: I generally believe that people should be respectful of other people´s believes and decisions. I think it is a real shame that there are so many comments that are insulting people, calling them names. Personally I am not sure they are actual people - there are so many of them and their comments are so similar, that I think many of them must be bots. Don´t stoot to their level, people!

Turkey's trading capacity to Israel is 4 times bigger now because of Erdogan. He is a show man. He is the first Turkish president that gain a medal from Israel (not joking) . He hide it for years. Hey brilliant guy, do you know that a coup attempt has been done in Turkey a couple of mounths ago, that is why some of soldiers, civillians, journalists, etc who are directly related with this coup has been jailed which is normally will be done in all democratic countries if same thing will happen. These peoples who are jailed has killed more than 250 people, but this number would probably increased if they became successful. Du you What would you do if same thing would happen in USA ? And one more thing, Turkey is the most democratic country in the world, too much democracy..

They are not. The President in Turkey has currently no powers. It is a ceremonial position. They are doing the referendum to allow the president to hold powers similar to what you have in the US. They are doing it by voting not by a military coup like the one the US coordinated last year in Turkey. The reason why people in Turkey like Erdogan is for what he did to their economy not because they are religious fanatics. This is pure propaganda.

Turkey lived long under military dictatorship, and Erdogan is the one who overthrew this situation, don't forget it. He is still seen by many as the first civil president. Also, he just escaped a very violent coup d'État lead by a parallel organization whose members are : judges, militaries, journalists, and businessmen... It's the Gülen network, and they take power by cooptation, bypassing democracy. So this is not all black and white as you presented it Trevor.
