Ben took 76er's for granted. They gave him everything he needed and shielded him from the world. After he didn't give them professional commitment in return they said "okay bud lets see how you look without us holding your hand", and this is the final product of that.
@NeilTruick
@NeilTruick Жыл бұрын
Facts. All they asked him to do was "shoot", not "make". Show opponents something different. If they know he's not going to shoot _and he actually doesn't shoot,_ then that makes it more difficult for the rest of the team to back him up, because someone is getting double-teamed, and that someone was usually Joel Embiid. He couldn't even do that. The moment it was announced that they traded him for Harden, I knew Philly won the trade, because I watched his regression. I also didn't buy for a second he was going to do anything more than he had done with the Sixers. That first game he was sitting on the Brooklyn bench like a 6'10" Care Bear among all of his teammates in their black and white uniforms, I said Brooklyn was going to be sorry they made that trade.
@mitchtherevolution
@mitchtherevolution Жыл бұрын
No, absolutely not, this is the most incorrect opinion I have seen in a long time. The 76ers are the REASON he is mentally unfit to compete. The 76ers and the NBA vastly overvalued Ben's ability so they could market him as the final face of the process. They wanted to skip his natural development, and market him as an all-star so they could sell tickets and appease frustrated Philly fans. The 76ers lobbied the NBA for his All-Star and Defensive awards that he categorically never deserved. The NBA was complicit in marketing an unfinished project as an all-star, because they also benefit from selling tickets. This is THE primary reason Ben Simmons never developed into a legitimate player and is borderline unplayable at this point.
@NeilTruick
@NeilTruick Жыл бұрын
@@mitchtherevolution Poor Ben. The big, bad Sixers crushed his psyche and career for nothing more than profit. Forget what the scouts said, forget his performance at LSU, forget his Rookie of the Year award, forget his refusal to shoot outside 10 feet, forget even Kobe said he needed a shot...the evil Sixers broke him. If you can put all that together at this late date and make it make sense in your head, I don't have the time, energy, or motivation to even _attempt_ to change your mind. You're absolutely right.
@mitchtherevolution

@@NeilTruick Me calling out the 76ers as a clown show franchise in a shithole city is not the same thing as defending Ben Simmons. They passed up Brandon Ingram and drafted a bench player with their number one pick, and tried to pretend like he was good. Ben Simmons went 2-13 in SEC at LSU, he didn't even make the NIT. You talking about his time at LSU as anything even remotely impressive is the embodiment of delusional dumb fuckery that trash ass Philadelphia people consistently engage in. He is a weak player, he never should have been the first overall pick, he never deserved his Rookie of the Year award, he never deserved any All Star selection, he never deserved any defensive awards. He should have been a middling off the bench defensive role player, but he was drafted into a shit show of incompetence and mismanagement in a city of degenerate trash people.

@@Papellxhase I'm pretty sure someone tried to have "the talk" with him when he was at 76ers or now at Nets. It takes a team an arm and leg to get him on the roster, they won't give up on him before exhausted everything they can think of to motivate him. I like how people know if his work ethic is bad or not. I mean you see him daily, can assess what he does vs other players empirically right? He may or may not have a poor work ethic, for us outside its simply conjecture. What is apparent to me is he is mentally broken. It's observable in his play, how the entire 76s saga played out, how he has admitted to mental health problems. It's also plausible that if he is mentally suffering he can't sustain a work ethic he would otherwise be capable of. If he can't overcome his mental demons, no amount of work is going to do anything.

Draymond is still aggressive though. He knows he can't shoot so he attacks in other ways that help his teammates. He still helps to generate good offensive outcomes. Ben doesn't compensate. He's just passive. It's not just that he turns down layups for floaters or for nothing at all but that in doing so he's taking things off the table and actively hurting the offense. Honestly it's just FT shooting though. The difference between shooting 60% on FT (1.2 pts per possession which is better than Denver's #1 offense) and 44% (0.88 PPP or 22 pts/100 worse than Charlotte's league worst offense) is a chasm. Even if he were being aggressive it wouldn't matter. It might even be worse.

The one more thing holding him back - his injury. The Nets are trying to manage his minutes, but the truth is that his back is still not right. And it shows. I think the most disappointing thing is that his rookie year he was doing everything that he doesn't do now. He just had to develop his shot more. But after he got all-star selection and made all-defense teams it seemed like he just packed it up. Even Fultz who had a similar bizarre situation where everyone wondered what happened to his shot, has become a serviceable player.

Exactly!! He was pulling up in summer league and everything. Even during the regular season. This is why it was frustrating people pretending like Sixers fans didn't know what they were talking about. We literally watched every game!! He absolutely did more of the things folks ask him to do as a rookie than any other year.

It's more than that. The shit that he has done on the court doesn't happen unless the guy has severe mental demons. It's turned into him not caring, but the guy has shown how deathly afraid he is of failing well before he stopped trying. He's a guy with an absolutely enormous ego who wants to constantly look cool, while also being completely mentally soft and afraid of failure. It's a pretty horrid psychological profile for someone to have.

I'm from a different era and generation of basketball, and I can honestly say I'm not surprised he fell off. The infamous pass not dunk play, just sped up the process for everyone else to see. He had more than enough time to work on his jumper and becoming a more efficient scorer. Can he pass yes, but he should be dominating with that size and getting decent numbers. This generation can keep the sympathy, but they should really just move on and call it a day with Ben, he ain't coming back new and improved any time soon.

According to things I've read about him, Ben's real sporting love was the AFL (Aussie rules football), and he pursued basketball only because his Dad had been a player and the money in the NBA is far, far greater. It's a shame in a way, because with his size, speed and vertical leap he could have dominated in the ruck or the forward line for any AFL team, and he would probably be leading a much happier life doing so. I'll be interested to read/hear any reflection he has on this in 20 years time.

I think the problem with Ben is he doesn't even have a strong driving game in traffic like a non-shooter like Giannis. He also lacks post moves to battle guys his height and even if he was successful driving, his free throw shooting is mediocre. At least Giannis has developed a nice bag of hookshots, layups and spin moves to get to the bucket.

I have listened to this assessment three times. This should have been a serious red flag. My second reed flag was his relationship with a Kardashian sister that caused him no to work on his skill in basketball in his very first offseason. Now Brooklyn is stuck with an expensive dead asset that they can only buy out because there is no value in taking that contract. Doc Rivers knew that's why he said what he did.

This dude has everything. And he’s throwing it all away. He needs to be in the gym putting up 8,000-10,000 shots a week, same amount of free throws. Looks he doesn’t need to be a 90%FT shooter or a 40% sharpshooter. But 70/30 would change the entire league/game for him. Just enough to be respected and unlock his ability to drive again without worrying about getting intentionally fouled. He does this he’s back in the all star conversation. He’s got access to the best shooting coaches on the planet. If I were him they would be at my mansion pretty much 24/7. They have their own private room, we are eating together, training non stop together, flying on the plane together. This should be his top priority as if his life depends on it. But it just appears that it’s not and this is turning into one of the NBAs saddest cases

It's all mental. Even if his jump shot stayed the same. If he had Shaqs free-throw mentality he would still be a force. Shaq would miss his free throws like a man and take it right back to the hoop with no regret. It put tremendous pressure on the D because he often time completed the shot(layup or dunk) anyway. So even if his actual shot never improved. If he missed his free throws like a man. He could still impact the game tremendously.
