So happy we found your videos - extremely helpful and inspiring. You might think that Hawaii and Ireland present different problems for the beekeeper but I'm finding almost all of your advice perfectly adaptable to our situation in Co Down. I'm ten years at this, always considered myself a hopeless beekeeper, but you've really grown my confidence and love of bees. Thank you!

I bought a 5 frame nuk in August of 2021, moved em to 10 frame deep as they grew added another deep, then another, they filled top deep with honey off the cotton & fall golden rod, they over-wintered fine, then started bringing lots of pollen February of 2022, I split it twice by March then I caught 2 swarms so then I had 5 colonies, the early swarm grew enough, I split it. I'm in Southern part of GA.

I use Oxalic Acid Vapor in the fall getting ready for winter, the wand sucked my lawnmower dead after ten hives even with the engine running. I bought a car battery and it does well, but it does put a drain on it requiring a few hours on a slow charge. The best advise is to stay upwind from your hive to minimize exposure, even with protection the OAV is toxic.. My hives overwinter well with a late season mite treatment and late summer feeding to build up stores.

Totally all langstroth deeps Especially if you want to expand . More bees per frame and less wood is the main reason .same with the honey more honey per frame less handling . If its too heavy carry a half a box of honey 🍯 If you are rich enough buy foam hives be sure they will work with langstroth frames . I saw one whose deeps are shorter than langstroth then you are trapped buying fr one supplier at an elevated price .

Hi, new beekeeper here. I know you touched on not checking on your hive too much. But if I recently had a small hive beetle infestation on the bottom board and on a couple frames, would it be necessary to check it every 3 days or so after I cleaned it up? Also thanks for making videos for the new beekeepers.

place 4 peppermint starlights on the top bars of your brood frames to retard SHBs

Not sure what Carl said, his comment is gone. But you definitely want to be monitoring what is going on with your hive if you have a beetle infestation. I would consider that something different than the weekly or monthy "checking" that should be done. Those beetles can overwhelm a hive quickly. I hope yours are ok!
@BeekeepingMadeSimple2 жыл бұрын
If you saw hive beetle slime in your hive, you could check on it every 3-4 days for a couple weeks to make sure they're ok. Just make sure you're not keeping the hive open long. Just pull out some frames, replace beetle traps if needed and close it up. I. do not think it's necessary especially if you have a decent population, there was just a little bit of slime and you left no more than 1 or 2 frames of honey in the hive.
@carlsledge38682 жыл бұрын
@@BeekeepingMadeSimple I'm below the Mason/Dixon line which means SHBeetles are your #1 problem and slime out a hive in less than 2 weeks, what I said up the page is placing 4 - 6 peppermint starlights on the top bars in your hive will help keep SHB In check.

Thanks for the information. I'll be starting up with bees this Spring (in Alaska thats may). Can I put the hive on a tree trunk? I left the base of a birch tree I cut down about 3' above ground. Wondering if there would be more bugs if I use the sump as a base.?

If someone wants to be a beekeeper, there are things they need to know and there are things they can learn, but will not help them keep healthy bees (which should be their ultimate goal). I see a lot of people (including myself) spending SO much time on things that aren't important to know - like genetics and hive style - but then they have *no idea* what to do when they open a hive or think they'll just "wait and see" when it comes to dealing with mites. There's only so many hours in a day and so much time someone is going to spend learning how to keep bees before they buy a hive, so why not direct people to what they really need to learn and tell them what is a waste of time?
@BeekeepingMadeSimple2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Karyn! I wasted a lot of time learning about top bar hives and spent very little time learning about how to deal with varroa mites my first year keeping bees. Guess what? My hives died. It's important for beginner beekeepers to learn what's important for the health of their bees before they go learning all the extra stuff that they don't really need to know. There's really only so much time someone can spend watching KZbin videos :) At least watch the stuff that will help your bees!
