@@hellalive8973 of course, it's part of the job. One of them had to have a different view or opposite opinion, otherwise it would be boring, people agreeing, there would be no show. He will probably have it in his remit to cause an uproar or cause friction so as to get a reaction. Reporters have the dame remit, to ask questions that revoke a response or difference of opinion, or get some information that wasn't meant to be released. He is honest, and gives his opinion, but I do believe he is also instructed to wind up guests, co hosts or callers so there is some content to debate on. Same as Jim will sometimes disagree, and I believe that it's just so that there is two sides to the argument. They will get on outside of the show, as they know it's nothing personal, it's part of the show and they are in the media industry.

It's impossible to relate, thing is if you played football 7 days a week at a high level you will get seriously injured you will make basic mistakes that cost your team points. @@JRW1886 that's such a blinkered opinion about being injured. I don't know why people think that it's somehow more preferable to be injured so you get paid for allegedly doing nothing. When players are injured thats when the real hard work starts. Go and watch Roy Keane putting himself through hell just to build up the muscle he'd lost due to injury. The easiest part of the job is being a fully fit footballer. These players are at the clubs for a full 8 hours or more everyday. They also have to do a lot of travelling. Crossing a time zone will affect anyone's body, they have to cross timezones and physically exert themselves, it's a lot. What you also don't understand is the amount of exertion they do in two hours is more than what most people do in 8. It's also not just physical exertion as well, there is a mental side to playing sports. You also have to take into account that they work all week and then work on the weekends. Playing football isn't just fun for them it's a job. They have to answer to a manager and work with people they may not like and put up with things they may not like. A job that requires giving up your privacy and public scrutinization and criticism. Millions of people are watching you and are ready to condemn you if you mess up. I never understand why people ask "what are the players willing to give up"? The clubs are not willing to give up the revenue from all these games, that's why there are so many fixtures. They don't play competitions to pay wages, they pay wages to play competitions. The players have no choice but to play, this is their job and they can't just tell their employer no. They are also frowned upon if they turn down international duty for club football. The only solution is to lower the number of games in the knockout competitions, get rid of pre-season and all it's ridiculous travelling and reduce the number of international fixtures during the season. Premier league teams have the most intense schedules of any sporting league. Their season is 11 months long, plus summer international duty, it's actually not fair. Footballers in general play more than any other sport. It's no wonder they are the only ones crying for better schedules.

Ive watched football since 1964, and I have watched great teams get knocked out of the European Cup pre Champions League, Teams knocked out in Round 1, no 2nd 3rd 4th placed clubs just League Winners, and thats what the format should be, then at least if you are knocked out, you wont have to play mid week in that comp. The same applies with the Europa League, go back to a draw, and loses go out. The are too many games now, and players are knackered. The World Cup, why increase the amount of teams, have it at 8 groups of 4, winners go into a draw. European Championship do the same. A two week break from Dec 20th to 3rd Jan. And a 6 week break from June to mid July. You dont race the likes of Frankel every week in a Group one race, the horse would collapse, and die. You dont see Tyson Fury fighting for the heavy Weight Championship of the World Every week. So why put Footballers through that sort of punishment.

I was listening to this debate live this morning as I was driving. What came to my mind was this: Bring in a wage cap for all players. There is no way hundreds of thousands of pounds a week are needed by the players, no way, it is obscene what some of them get. By reducing wages, and I mean by more than 10,000 or 20,000, maybe have the cap set at around 50,000 a week, that will drive down season/match day tickets prices thus allowing the blue collar working dad and his son, who are priced out of the game, to attend games. Scrap international friendlies, they are pointless. Scrap the nations international league. Stop trying to expand the Champions league. How about having the champions league for actual champions of each European league? Plus, maybe have the winners of each European leagues major Cup (FA Cup in england) play in the European Cup. Also, scrap extra time in Cup final games and go straight to penalties after 90 minutes! I recall, about 20 years or so ago, an article I read regarding professional sports players and the hours per week they work based on the 38 hour a week regime that regular Joe blogs works. Football players, it was stated, work about a 13 hour a week, and at the time, I believe that included match day. Tennis players were closest to 38 hour week at around 33 hours. Now, that may have changed somewhat, some 20 years later, but not by much I'm guessing. Sadly, money has ruined the game. Players in the top leagues do earn way too much and the powers that be in football are going to continue with the forever changes to get more money out of folk who enjoy watching games, either in the stadiums or on TV and they do not care. The careers of top level players is short but some if them in their 20's could retire tomorrow with the money they have and let's not forget the money they earn from endorsements. Sterling for instance advertising Gillette razor's, he's probable getting something like a million a year for that, on top of his Man City wages of about 100,000 a week or more!

I hate to say it but I agree with Simon. players won't give up the money. UEFA needs a salary cap based off of club/league revenue. That way if the number of games goes down the salary cap does too. Works in American football (NFL is the most profitable league in the world) and allows the clubs to be profitable and sustainable. It might also allow for a little more parity.

Not just the players though... The organisations and the club owners. The major clubs are owned by owners now that purely see the clubs as businesses, not really fans of the clubs they run, and as soon as the clubs make mega dish, they get sold to the highest bidder. Chelsea is worth 3 times more than when abramovich bought them, Liverpool will be sold for probably 3 times what was paid, same as Manchester City. Manchester United. Have probably hit their glass ceiling, and are worth probably what was paid, maybe half billion more, but not 3 times.

@@aokaparagit for me it’s not a bad attitude he just forceful. Then you have Keown who’s argument his just based on defending footballer’s and Simon won’t let him get away with it. But hey we are both entitled to our opinion. 😊

I played football at the local park 5-6 days of the week and you didn't here me complaining. Went to work after dead tired but I did it cos I loved it. Footballers who get paid 2x or 3x normal people's salaries per week shouldn't complain too much. Some people die at their jobs from hazardous environments. Footballers worst injuries may only be ACL tears or Achilles ruptures in which they get their full salary even if they are out for a year. There ain't no job out there for normal people to be paid sick leave for an entire year. Footballers are so disconnected from the real world. Even Zlatan the other day said he doesn't wanna retire cos life after football scares him

for Gods sake,,spare us the idiocy of Keown. I am sick of listening to his ridiculous logic and self contradiction. So argumentative,,but no facts or substance.

There is another dimension to this - coaches or tactical styles. Pressing and counter pressing are more and more common. It makes games more demanding for players - you are expected to run 90 min. Why Fabinho and Thiago cannot be fit? Because they play in Klopp’s intense system. There is a reason why a lot of players in Italy that can play into their late 30s - it is slow paced and defensive league which do not require intense running and pressing.

There is no doubt that some of the gaps between games are too short. Guardiola said recently that he had no time to train between away Champions league matches and the ensuing league match. All the players could do was rest-he said sleepx3. But the players will have to take a hit or the season will have to be lengthened if we are to have the same number of games as now. There is not a lot to be done about the Premier League given that broadcasters, who pay most of the players wages, have their schedules. Surely, though, this matter only affects clubs who have gone far in cup competitions, particularly abroad.

Have a squad of 26 players. They are getting paid £100,000+ a week and can't play 3 games a week. People work 12 hour days 7 days a week to get by. I don't want to hear it.

Not to mention emergency services who by comparison get paid an absolute pittence and put their lives on the line daily, or those in support work, or the military! Footballers should be paid by minutes on the field, then the rest of the wage budget donated to good causes, then you'll see how many really want the recovery time.

There’s a reason why clubs have squads. To share workload. If the workload is too much then learn how to rotate and make use of your U23 reserves

We have this same issue year in year out. Back end of every season is positively loaded yet front end of season is completely open. Why not try and get an extra league game in before the first international break or even better bin the unnecessary international break at the start of the season
