The Bible tells us that God gives us "More than Enough" "That we having Sufficiency in all things might be able to GIVE to Good Works". And when I receive so much I'm obligated to GIVE to others out of my Abundance! It's such a Joy to be able to GIVE. In fact, I now find more Joy in Giving than Receiving! My husband & I are in our 70s (married 56yrs) & after a Long Illness, I've been Inspired to completely Clear out everything that we don't enjoy using or have a need for! We have been giving some of our nicer things that we no longer use to newly married couples, either in the neighborhood or from our church! You can't imagine the Joy everyone shared with one another by this! The younger ones felt so Honored & Blessed bc we've had a Good & Long Marriage & by giving them something of ours the Blessing flows into them! How wonderful is that? If we learn to have JOY in all we do, then what the World calls "Having Less" is really Having More!

We need more of these videos. Not just for the financial and environmental health benefits, but for the mental health side awareness. I don’t think materialism makes people happy, in fact it does the opposite. We should encourage each other to find meaningful connections and experiences, we’ll be better off for it.

Hi Sophie, I spent the day visiting a an 88 year old man who I have come to love and make my family, he suffered a stroke and I make him green smoothies, talk to him, listen to music etc. I ended up staying for hours and when I walked home slowly I felt so 'rich' and peaceful, and my feeling of 'envy' for those who go abroad on holiday reduced so much, I felt so present.

0:00: The speaker noticed the constant bombardment of advertisements and products in stores, prompting thoughts on the messages sent by companies. 0:41: The speaker questions who truly benefits from materialism and the pursuit of a perfectly organized materialistic life. 1:19: The speaker shares their personal experience of challenging themselves to only buy necessary items and how it helped reset their shopping habits. 2:00: The speaker emphasizes the importance of shopping intentionally and using guidelines rather than strict budgeting. 2:56: Budget in cash and set limits on credit cards to challenge consumer habits. 3:26: Resetting habits and evaluating our routines is important. 3:45: Algorithms personalize ads based on our interests, leading to impulsive purchases. 4:20: Simplifying skincare and makeup routines reduces temptation to buy unnecessary products. 6:05: The narrator acknowledges the role of shopping in defining their self-worth. 6:25: Recognizing when we have enough prevents us from getting caught up in a never-ending pursuit of frivolous things. 6:46: Realizing that we are enough without adding more to our lives brings gratitude and peace. 7:28: Resisting the narrative that we are not enough in a culture that constantly tells us so is powerful. Love this. I recently did some mystery shopping at a few different designer stores, including Hermes, Chanel and Dior. I noticed how some of the female customers were in all of the shops I went into, but one lady in particular caught my eye... I had seen her in Chanel first, and noticed how unhappy she looked as she searched for a new bag. Then later I saw her in Hermes, with a big Chanel gift bag with what I presumed was an expensive Chanel bag inside, and my first thought was, "Money doesn't buy happiness, she doesn't look any happier than before". It was eye-opening to say the least.

One way I control things is that I have AdBlock on all my devices and I use a privacy browser and search engine (Brave). This eliminates 99% of ads. I do see ads on Facebook and Instagram and I am working on finding a way to eliminate them too. Because I was the firstborn of a large family on a budget, I have shopped second hand my entire life and I prefer it. It's the thrill of the hunt and the delight of a 'find'!

Todd McGowan really gets at a core in his work, I think: "Desire always finds its satisfaction through missing its object. The basic structure of desire is it never realizes itself in an object and that‘s the source of its satisfaction. Capitalism maps itself on that structure of desire but it gives us the illusion that we may sometime be able to get the object of our desire, but in truth our desire is satisfied by not getting that object." Fundamentally, desire ceases to be once we obtain an object, but because the pleasure is in the desire, it immediately fixates on the next object. The things is to accept the presence of this mechanism without fruitlessly feeding it objects, as you point out.

After doing no-buy ince last December I have realized that this is the crux of my depression and insecurities: I feel like I'm not worth any, not enough, unless I have ultra high income worth and smashing designer outfits and perfect makeup. There are almost no spaces in America where I can just EXIST without being advertised to and the algorithms Insta pushes to me are beautiful people with lavish mansions and cars and I feel like I'm worth nothing because my life doesn't look like that. Thank you for making this video, I'm sure it resonates with so many women (probably men too!)

For many years I struggled with the temptation of shopping. One day I had an epiphany that I really don't need anything material. In fact I had entirely too much stuff. That revelation allowed me to let go of so much that could be a blessing to others. By doing this I learned that I am enough just as I am. Recently, I have been listening to some affirmations on gratitude to reduce that pressure to consume. Today I woke up and started thinking about doing a low spend challenge for the remainder of the year and then the universe showed me your video. ❤

So I'll tell a little but about my journey with minimalism if anyone feels like reading: So I have really enjoyed simplicity and trying to be more present and enjoy what I have. I will e honest I'm not really grateful most of the time and always want a new thing, sth. New and exciting but I noticed that making memorys is way more exciting than another dress that I will than just end up throwing out because it isn't my taste anymore. So practicing gratitude is sth. Big I'm learning and to also get off the track of trying to be relevant in a way and to really enjoy time with myself and the simplicity I'm trying to create (being less on social media definitely helped). I cleaned my closet out sth. Very important to me because I just love fashion but I don't sew I just like the runway shows and seeing the items and I have learned to appreciate the pieces and stop feeling like I need to have this when I clearly don't. So I let go of a lot of things and kept what truly meant sth. To me. Being off social media except KZbin because I like watching inspiring videos like this has also helped me be more calm and I will be honest I did have a crying session because I felt so confused. It somehow was a big change for me but I also realized how unnecessary it really is. I cried because I felt so lost and cut my way out if dealing with my emotions, my escapism. So I sat there and just let myself feel the things and just let it flow instead of trying to run away. It was scary but I'm quite happy I did that. I also didn't know what to do with my time but than after a while I started doing things I enjoy again, I painted, read, an calling my friends way more often and also hang out with them a lot more. I spent a lot of time in nature or listening to music or watch movies, series I truly enjoy. I bake from time to time and started doing sport again and I kind of feel liberated like my life is just more quiet and peaceful which I was striving for and makes me really happy. Along this journey her channel always inspired me to keep going this way even if I felt like society wanted sth. Else from me or that I'm not cool or not enough for doing that, but I kept doing my thing and I' really happy that I' owning my life. I also found the strategy of thinking of clothes as uniforms very interesting and the video was just eye opening to me again. I just want to say that this might seem simpler that it is and that if you are going through a hard time that it is ok❤

This one is my most fave video of yours so far! Almost all lines hit me to the core. Thank you for doing what you do. Love this, but I never understand when people say “this is better than budgeting, it’s less restrictive”. Budgeting is only restrictive if you make it restrictive. If you want to budget $500 a week for groceries, do it! It’s your budget. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s a plan on how you want to spend your money. You’re in charge. Make it restrictive or make it bougie.

Thank you for this 💕 I just read the magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo and your video has neatly tied my thoughts and feelings up in a bow for me. I’ve decluttered many times with the intent of not needing to spend as much once I’m happy with what I have. But I’m still unsatisfied, things return to chaos, and I keep buying more than I should. I spent 1 or 2 years living out of a suitcase because of covid, and even then I had clothes I never wore. It taught me lots about what I do and don’t need but since getting home I haven’t been able to apply those lessons. I’ve realised it’s because I declutter/tidy with the same mindsets I shop with!!! Such as keeping things because I might need them one day, that day hasn’t come and sometimes I can’t see things I actually do need behind that other stuff and I end up buying something similar, only to be frustrated when I realise I bought multiple but only needed 1. Before I can reduce unhelpful spending like you say I need to break that mindset. It’s difficult and new for me so I’ll use Marie’s method, with the same gratitude you both teach. I’m very thankful for all my things but honestly I can’t take care of or appreciate them all fully. I think if I only keep what I truly love, and a few extras that are absolutely necessary like some paperwork, I might learn my lesson and it will be easier to shop with this mindset too. This video made me realise, if I don’t practice this in the comfort of my home how can I expect to manage it with ads and shiny new things everywhere? I hate the waste of getting rid of things and I worry about the environmental impact but it’s better to face my overconsumption now than to keep repeating the cycle. I only have a normal amount of stuff, but I guess these issues are also normal in any consumerist culture

I am usually a very positive person, or strive to be one, but I’ve lost someone very dear to me recently. The one thing that came out of it, changed my view on materialism. He was a very good person, but kind of a materialist, always wanted a newest phone, shoes, jackets…but in the end…he wasn’t able “to take” any of those things with him to where he was going…things are just things, our lives shouldn’t revolve around things. We don’t need things, we need something much more valuable. I’ve learnt it the hard way…

I love it so much I got my first tattoo at 53 and it is a sunflower! 🌻 (Your painting is beautiful!) The way you explain the benefits of living a minimalist lifestyle has had an impact on me. I have made the decision to begin this journey. It seems quite daunting right now, however, starting small and not putting pressure on myself is what I need to keep in mind. I’m a long time minimalist, even before it was a thing. My best advice for a person that wants to embrace the minimalist lifestyle is to not give a f*** about what other people think of you. A lot of times person might think “I can’t show with the same shirt to work more than twice, people might think I’m poor” so this person find himself to keep buying clothes endlessly. I personally don’t mind going with same shirt to work 30, 40, 50 times as long as it doesn’t show wear.

I'm pretty good at holding myself back from materialistic things. My weakness, however, is food. Whenever I get slightly hungry, or even when I'm not, and I get a craving for something, I won't stop thinking about it until I satisfy my cravings. Sometimes I even get in a bad mood when I hold myself back from food. It's tricky trying to balance between not starving myself and avoiding overindulgence

I love the idea of redefining materialism - instead of the pursuit of more material wealth, making it the pursuit of better knowledge and care of what we already have. Learn about the materials, their origin and history, the impact, how to care for it properly and mend it if it breaks. So that we can make more memories with what we have instead of wanting more stuff.

I am doing my best to become minimalist because I'm so overwhelmed by the amount of absolute crap that I have accumulated in the ten years I've lived in my apartment. I moved in here with just a bed and a few little things, and now ten years later, I have an apt filled with too much furniture and a walk- in closet I can barely walk into because of all the junk in there. I'll be moving in 10 months and downsizing to a small studio so my goal is take as little as possible with me BUT I am having such a hard time letting go of stuff. While my apt is pretty because of my background in interior design, I have noticed that I never feel relaxed in my own home because everywhere I look, there's always something to focus my eyes on. I'm one of those people who can't handle a blank wall, and I keep things for years "just in case" I need to re-purpose it "someday". I'm really hoping to conquer this soon👍

Good capsule!👏 I think all brands are doing their job ( sell) it is our job 🧠 to think with our OWN mind in ALL aspects of our lives. What is SO AMAZING to me is the amount of options there are to buy clothes of ALL prices and I see frequently BADLY dressed people 🤦‍♀️😵‍💫 The forever and ever gym outfit for everything always ,people only with tennis shoes, men in sandals with stockings 👀, T shirts ……… is like people also obey how they should dress. ( ugly all the same) Few people discover their personal style and dress nice and correctly looking gorgeous always. Elegance is impossible to buy it with MONEY, elegance is a behaviour , an attitude, where you dress well for yourself . Wearing THE MOST EXPENSIVE BAG with jogging pants does not make you look good, or makes you look well dressed. Just AN expensive BAG does NOT make a good outfit, you have to be well dressed from top to botton.

I couldn't find the original video you said it on, but the gist was that you watched the True Cost and tried to create a capsol wardrobe. I just want to say thank you I just finished watching it and wow. I emotions were so mixed throughout the whole thing. But now I will defiantly buy won't buy any fast fashion. If anyone that sees this comment hasn't watched it. Do it!

These companies are not telling you to do anything or making you do anything, same way you just walked by is the same way other that want to practice minimalism should. Jeez y’all like to reach so hard. I live a minimalist lifestyle but I enjoy seeing products and fashion. Buy as needed. For those that don’t practice minimalism I love it too.
