I’m from Tulsa, OK. I just went to London about three weeks ago, my first trip overseas. I absolutely LOVED it (P.S., I got a lot of help from your videos, so thanks for all the help). That being said, it was a major change dealing with the weather. When I left Tulsa the weather was just starting to get chilly, in fact the high that day was around 60ish; so stepping off the train and getting a breath of cool air was kind of refreshing. Also, London, and England in general gets a lot of rain. We get rain in certain periods of the year, and sometimes we get droughts lasting for weeks and even months. The tube system was a little difficult to figure out, but after my first day it was a piece of cake, but yes I agree that it did get crowded. Being an tourist, it did make me a little paranoid because you don’t know who you are going to run into. But all in all, the trip was a blast, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. I did do all of my Christmas shopping there, so that was a major plus. Overall, I thought it was a beautiful city, but I only wish I had one more day. But, I know what to expect the next time I go there. Anyway, I’m rambling. Just thought I’d let you know my thoughts about London. Have a lovely day 😊

I live in a small town in Northern CA and I loved London, much to my surprise. (I hate San Francisco) I loved the weather, the cabs, the stones, the HUGE diversity of people. I loved going into a restaurant or pub and hearing 12 different accents. Loved the amazing number and quality of the parks all over the city! Loved the easy busses and using the tube, but I can easily see that it would be an awful thing to face every bloody morning. I absolutely adore London and if I were to win a few million dollars in a lottery I’d move there in a heartbeat. The only complaints you mentioned that i’m totally on board with is the travel time and rush-hour. I think the travel time is something that tourists going to London for the first time can’t really understand until they experience it. The first time we visited I made a daily schedule of all the places we would go without realizing it took extended periods of time to get from one place to the other even though it appeared on the map to be close. “On Monday let’s walk around Shoreditch, take the tube over toward Oxford Street for a couple hours shopping and then end the day at the British Museum!” Oh how naive! Even limiting yourself to one borough can be a time suck in commuting. We‘be navigated London for a month at a time on two separate occasions and I still can’t imagine doing regular life there... Going to work, running errands, having appointments and going out with any distance between them all. Even so, I can never get enough of that city!

Las Vegas has a similar issue when it comes to making friends. Everyone here is so transient its hard to know someone for more than a few months. @munstergirl255 жыл бұрын
I think it's definitly true that you have different friendships than in other places. I have rarely been to a friend's house in London as it's just too much of a hassle. You travel for ages as you likely live in the other side of the city, then people either live in cramped house shares or still with their parents, or a tiny studio that gets claustrophobic with more than 2 people. So if you are used to seeing your friends several times a week, that may be hard.

I can definitely relate to the struggles of commuting to and from work. I live in Vancouver, Canada. I sometimes drive to work which takes about 1-1.5 hr each way. If I take transit then it's a little bit of a shorter commute(an hr to an hr.15) but the train situation is the same as the Tube that you were describing. Sardines in a car, your face shoved into someone's armpit- not what I want to be doing-EVER!! And this on top of the fact that you have to see 2 or 3 trains go by before you can get on. Vancovuer, without doubt is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Rent. food, clothing, sightseeing, entertainment.. you name it , we pay double what the rest of the country pays for. A studio in downtown Vancouver will set you back $2000-2500. For what is, basically a closet.

Even though the authorities have done everything to dissuade potential motorists in the Cities though they WILL keep them out of Central London because of the cost of the C. Charge and parking the more we progress with creature comforts the more many people are going to want the flexibilty, reliability and freedom a warm car gives you. That desire will only increase. Imagine in the cold, wet and snow seeing people waiting at bus stops in that freezing cold while you go by in a warm, modern car with YOUR choice of passengers and music etc. It's far more practical for shopping and doing things spontaneously and when I started to drive in London 37 years ago in February 1981 it changed my life and enabled me to go out socially and work-wise over 7,000 times going from one place to another. Where I now live on the periphery of South London I once had no car for 6 weeks but had to get to work which then involved a 15 minute walk to the nearest bus stop, a wait for 15 minutes, a 10 minute journey to the station bus stop then a walk to the station. Wait for the train Get off at London Bridge and a 10 minute walk to the tube. Then a tube to Stratford then walk to the main line station then wait for a train and the journey to Chadwell Heath station then after the train journey then walk onto the local bus stop and wait for a 89 Bus and then that journey and another 10 minute walk to my work-place. All around 2 hours + each way in all weathers. This involved 5/6 walks, 2 buses, 1 Tube and 2 Train journeys each time. By car ? 5 feet to my car and a 30/35 minute journey in the warm door-to-door :) I won't need to phone a friend ! lol

Love this video, actually all so true! I am from New Zealand & I've been here for 5 months today & am loving it, but everything you've mentioned are definitely London struggles. You mentioned air pollution - I haven't noticed vehicle pollution so much as the amount of people who smoke here!! I feel like walking the streets I can never get a clean breath of air because there's always people smoking whenever I go. Weather. It looks like it permanently wants to rain but is what I am telling people is 'Standard London Grey'. But on a positive note I love that you can still go out & do stuff in winter because there's just so much happening. This was never the case in sleepy NZ. Also I am disappointed London doesn't get a decent snowfall. I'm in the northern hemisphere now & I want snow! Making friends is hard - we have an awesome Kiwi community in London which is great, but it doesn't feel quite right that I've moved to the other side of the world only to make friends with more Kiwis & Aussies Hahaha. But then I have a British friend in Essex who I hardly see because of the lengthy travel time & even more expensive trains in & out of London. One thing that frustrates me is the lack of rubbish bins! I feel like it's better than what I remember when I was here as a tourist on 2012, but still it can be so frustrating trying find a rubbish bin on the streets. I’m from Queensland Australia and I don’t like how hot and humid it can be here for such loooong periods. We are the opposite and barely get a winter! It just gets very exhausting being so hot constantly when you’re four months into the relentless heat, but obviously it’s really beautiful most of the time. I went to London in February and it was amazing to get out of the heat for two weeks!

The biggest problem with commuting in London is that the streets in London were designed for horse and carriages and not for a pile up of vehicle congestion. It's pretty much the same in every UK city, the city I live in (Portsmouth) is an island and there is only 3 ways you can get into the island. It doesn't help that Portsmouth is the UK's second most densely populated city as well (after London). You're right to a certain extent with the weather, I don't think I've ever been to London when it's been a nice sunny day with blue skies! At least you don't live near the beach because it'll be even colder than living inland 😁

The roads in London were barely "designed" at all. The road traffic situation in London has been a perfect example of the disaster that is unrestricted private car ownership. Britain is slowly, achingly slowly, waking up to this fact.

i was in london for 5 days during the week and never experienced the awful rush hour...maybe one morning crowded trains= just once...and the weather was rainy one day warm sunny the next slightly chilly the next and this was in October. Now come to CHicago...London would be a balmy vacation in the winter compared to negative 21 degrees in Chicago. Now I should have known better to stand to the left considering I ride the L here in Chicago but I was so excited while talking to a new friend and this gentleman politely asked me to excuse him and I was enamored by his accent. I found everyone so polite and mannerable compared to the states. I witnessed a traffic accident and the two guys jumped out their cars sounding like they were asking for forgiveness from one another!!! It was strange to me!

In a good year May and September are pleasant. It's the end of September now and it is lovely out. In a bad year you get no summer at all and it can rain pretty much every day. That's something which can surprise visitors who are used to a climate. We don't have a climate, we have weather. Winter is long and grim, daylight is scarce and actual sightings of the sun are incredibly rare. Natives make the most of the long summer days and try to hibernate through the winter.

Love your video content!! Really helpful! We’ve been a couple times but really are considering an overseas move and I’m excited to watch your videos to do kind of some research I guess real research from a real person! I’ve always wanted to live in the UK but I am concerned about the air-quality in London. Since you’re from the states you’ll understand this right now we live in Tennessee my husband is in electrical engineering and works with the space station and things like that and has been offered a job in Germany but I really really want to live in the UK! We have visited both and both are beautiful! It’s just well my family is from the UK like a long time ago LOL I speak English and Spanish so I don’t think that’s going to help me in Germany 😂 and we have a teenage son that would definitely fit in better in the UK 🇬🇧 because he doesn’t speak German either... although when we travel LOL we always learn how to say please, thank you, excuse me, count to 20 and really helpful words like wine and beer and how much is this? LOL but it really has helped us! In fact I’m sorry was the best Word I’ve ever used in Paris!! Anytime I stumbled and tried because I did take high school French as long as I said I was sorry they were so helpful! Anyway so bunch of questions and thank you I love your channel love the information you’re giving!! It’s so useful and it’s just really enjoying to listen to you one because again it’s really useful information into you seem excited to live there and that gets me excited to live there!! 😂 I saw you on being British Joel and Lia and left my rear end off!! They are so cute and funny!! Again thanks to you too!!!

Just to let you know if you haven't moved yet, that the UK has a thriving space industry and constructs a large number of the commercial satellites that are launched. Stevenage, just to the north of London is one of the centres of the industry. London does have an air quality problem, particularly along the major traffic routes. But major steps to rectify the problem are being taken.

Great suggestions! When I travel, I tend to avoid anything touristy, and I am a big fan of simply wandering, because my goal is to see the people and how they live. I do suggest walking tours as a great guided informal way to see something or an area (the day I did one, it was to have been centered around St. Paul, but the services for the passing of the Queen Mum disrupted all of that), so our guide took us on another fascinating trip around The City instead, which was awesome! I do think people need to pick a "theme" of what they wish to do in London when visiting. My theme was centered around two books, "Blackout" and "All Clear" by Connie Willis, which are about future "historians" that could time travel but ended up getting "stuck" during the Blitz. It involved lots of department stores, tube stations, and other landmark areas, so it was fun to re-live the sites in the books through incessant wandering, lots of coffee and tea, and definitely tons of good food! And another resource, especially if you still want to see something but have too much mileage on your feet, is the hop-on hop-off buses. I know it sounds touristy, but it's a great way to get to several places and even hop-off if you like an area you pass through. Plus you get to sit if you want to take a breather between jaunts.

Here in Toronto the traffic is insane during rush hour and it's still rough during non rush hour times! The man of snow here is crazy and sometimes I don't leave the house just because the Walker can't get through it. I think every place the world has its good and bad things about them. But I think London is unique where there is so much to do that it kind of just out weighs everything else. As I Canada I love London in terms of people I've maintained a lot of my friendships from there through letters, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and text message. We don't get to see each other as often due geographical location and travel but when we do meet up and makes it so worth it you just kind of have to plan ahead. I hope your New Year's Eve went well and it wasn't so crazy for you.

Good Video ! The problem with London now is that the average price to buy a Home for 8 million Londoners is now £ 600,000 !!! So with the lack of NEW social housing this forces more and more people onto the Rental Market. I lived for 28 years just 3 miles from Central London but moved ( like most indigenous Londoners) to The Outer Suburbs in 1983. Prices are much cheaper and I am only 30 minutes from Charing Cross/Trafalgar Square and the area is soooo safe that I do not even have a lock on my back door so it isthe best of all Worlds as I am half-a-mile from A London Postal District but in the safer Suburbs and just 15 minutes from the beautiful Kent Countryside. You should try it !!

I went for 8 days and i loved it. But there were things i didn't like. First, the lack of benches or any type of place where i can sit. I went to stores and none of them had chairs at the entrance to sit in case we're waiting to be picked up or in case someone needs to sit down for a moment. Also, the lack of restrooms doesn't make sense. Small stores, supermarkets, tube stations and some fast foods places didn't have toilets for the public. McDonald's and Starbucks were my saviors(i have Crohn's) I also didn't see many trashcans around. I don't wanna be holding my trash for a mile. American brands are not cheap there. I did love taking the tube and the trains. I miss it. lol and i LOVE PRIMARK.

With regards to trash cans or rubbish bins as we call them, thanks to the IRA using them to place bombs in railway or tube stations and public places, a lot of trash cans were removed and never replaced. But now there is the threat of Islam etc I doubt they will ever be replaced. By the way, there are public toilets in most railway stations, department stores, supermarkets and most pubs. American brands are dearer here of course because of Import costs. The same goes for British brands in the US.

Transit times for public transport are accurate, you want to add a margin for not being able to get on the first train, passengers falling onto the line and signal failures etc, but Google is a good guide. Road journeys, unless travelling in the middle of the night you can double or triple the Google estimate.

Good question Roger. A pub is a relaxed, quiet bar that's more like a restaurant until the evenings (parents often bring children during the day.) A bar is mostly drinks-focused, often only open in the evening. And a club is pretty standard!

So helpful! Our trip to London last September was so enjoyable -- the advice to skip the tube during rush hour was a key!! We would normally feel like we're wasting time to start our day later (after rush hour) and going back to hotel neighborhood (before pm rush hour) but it worked great. We went to theater but waited until after rush hour to leave. My hometown (Kansas City) has no public transportation and is very spread out, which is a real downer for locals and visitors alike.

I hear ya! I thought 45-60 minutes to go 11 miles in the SF Bay Area was bad! And housing costs, OH. EHM. GEE Avg. home prices are $1.1mil or so (for a very avg. home) but avg. income is $99k. Rents are around $25-3500/mo outside SF and even higher in SF. People have started living in mobile homes and parking them on the city streets in cities that allow that. And weather... I moved from a hot summer/cold winter area to a coastal community that was cold pretty much year round. I’m no sun bunny, but it was definitely hard to get used to cold, overcast weather all the time. We called it layer-land b/c you never knew when the sun might appear.

I live in Switzerland, lived in Geneva for 8 years and now back in a smaller town to do my MA. Our weather isn-t too bad, we have colder snowy winters but also have decent spring and summers so I cant complain. What I don-t like about Switzerland are the extremely high prices for everything (transport, rent , eating out, even a coffee) Agreed our salaries are comparatively high and Uni was more or less free -- I-ve done a Bachelors and 2 Masters degrees supporting my self and self financing by working part time and not a single bit in dept in fact by living frugally I actually managed to save a few thousand during my studies which would not have been possible anywhere else in the world. Am still a part time teacher while doing a teaching MA. I don-t like the pollution in Geneva and high prices mean we never go out for a meal unless it-s a very special occasion, we do invite friends over for a meal at home though and meet up groups on common interests help in making acquaintances. But it s basically also difficult to make new friends in Geneva. Here back in my hometown, I have my school friends and some new uni friends and some work colleagues so it-s actually better than in geneva. Rent was also very high in geneva, so that doesn-t help in being able to save, but I was lucky enough to live in center of town ( basically had to since I was a substitute on call teacher having to get to lots of different schools in 1h notice). Advantage of things being so expensive here in Switzerland is that London seems comparatively cheap, and other european cities even cheaper, and I enjoy my 2 to 3 city breaks in europe a year.
