Things I've learnt after appearing for NID DAT Prelims Thrice

It feels good to be back after so long. This time around, I'm sharing something very personal that I have been going through for the last 2 to 3 years. I feel everyone talks about getting into design college, but we hardly talk about what would happen if we did not get in. I believe a lot of you'll be facing this issue. So, talking about this felt very important for me to do.

NID should update their selection process, like other art schools around the globe, they should start giving preference to the portfolio. Rather than taking test, out of which 40% is mental aptitude.

I'll assume you haven't had any experience with DAT because mental aptitude is a cornerstone of any design education. It's not an art course. Design is about problem solving, what problem are you solving if you think the mental aptitude part (which is a bare minimum of your total score) is what's holding you back?

@@HimanshuSingh-sf3lc Certainly, the best design institutions around the world do not follow this selection process.... whether it's calarts, Sheridan, Ringling, gobelin etc....none of them are having aptitude tests....and actually their focus is mostly on the portfolio.... especially when it comes to communication design like animation or film making....the mathematical aptitude that they try to test doesn't even have any relevance in these fields.... As far it goes for problem solving and ideas....you cannot judge them in 3 hours... people can have great ideas....and that might take time....you might not make a feature film on an idea that you had in a 3 hour exam.... it's a completely different playing field when it comes to actually producing art... However the best thing that they can judge through these exams is draftsmanship....otherwise if you're selecting on the basis of who's having the least worst idea in a 3 hour exam....then it's an even more awful than it sounds.

@@yashanim absolutely agree about everything but there really isn't any mathematical reasoning aptitude questions that I faced in my attempt, pattern recognition sure but not mental math, then again NID does change their question patterns every year so I wouldn't be surprised.

You cant make this comparison among different institutes more so from different countries. Design education curriculum n pedagogy is such that it is made a/c to countries' context.

Could relate soo bad i missed nid twice and both of the time I was just 1 mark less than cut off it's heartbreaking. I wish they could critic us regarding the subjective section it could really help us improve.

In all my attempts I always opted for rechecking. While I can't really say how useful it is I feel it gives us mental satisfaction that we did all that we could. Also, in your case if it is just one mark I think you should definitely go for it.

I got 48.85 out of 100 for bdes without any coaching and first attempt, do you think I'll make next year? This time I'm giving all the efforts and pvt colleges exams too , I'll be happy with any good pvt institute too but bruh nid is literally a dream college for me, so do you think I'll make it?

NID keeps on giving surprises with there changing paper patterns so I can't really say anything about your chances of getting into NID but if you have put in all of your efforts and hardwork this year you sure have a good chance

@@rachita_fr practice sketching everyday for atleast 3 hours your line drawing have to be perfect also try to include as much as human figures possible for the drawing questions ! Also practice perspective drawing , in case of aptitude go through model papers !
