I would recommend a portfolio of you have an interview. Interview without a portfolio provides very less opportunities to talk and discuss.. also it shows professionalism.. if you don't have an interview, then you can skip making a portfolio..

Heyy, Yeah you are right. Automotive design is a subset of Product Design and you can do that. Many product designers get into automotive design by doing the auto design projects..
