High school is still SO early. If your dream is to become a vet, do just that! No one knows what you're capable of. College is a whole different ballgame and the science classes are hard. Hi! It all depends on the veterinarian/clinic and if they're willing to take responsibility for you. In many clinics I've worked at, they will hire people 16-18ish/highschoolers as a kennel tech. Even getting this handling experience is important and helps. If you for sure want to go to vet school, work your way up to a tech. Tell them you're interested in being a tech and they will likely train you up :) I'd contact vets in your area and ask to volunteer or gain experience as a vet tech or kennel tech as a job.

Hi, I am currently a kennel tech at a local vet clinic. When applying to vet school would you count this as animal hours or vet hours? Most of my job takes place in the treatment area and my job description can be similar to a vet assistant (I frequently care for surgical instruments, help restrain, etc). In addition would you submit the total hours worked at the clinic as vet hours since I can frequently watch what the vets are doing? Or separate my hours worked into animal exp and vet exp?
@nataliekelley8013 жыл бұрын
When looking at comparisons of kennel tech vs vet assistant, my job is about 80% vet assistant if that helps. I'm just not sure how the experience hours would work here since it's a job and not shadowing

I plan on taking a bachelors degree in marine biology first before joining DVM. I’m able to get a first year exemption from a marine bio course since I already have a diploma in marine science but I realised that I would be skipping the first year general mods like general biology, organic chemistry, genetics and physics which are the prerequisites required for DVM. I would be diving straight into year 2 and 3 specialised mods (aquatic animal anatomy, aquatic biology, genetics etc.). Do you think I would still be able to apply for the DVM programme for SGU? Or is it recommended that I take a full 4 years general biology degree instead?
@BrittneyKilgore4 жыл бұрын
You just have to have a 4 year degree and the prereqs. It doesn't really matter how you get them, but at some point you'd have to get like those chemistries and courses done (even if like extra electives)
@marcoscarrillo44493 жыл бұрын

I wanna get out of it because I struggle a lot with chemistry. I’m interested in chemistry but it’s hard if that makes sense.
@BrittneyKilgore3 жыл бұрын
No, you don't take it in vet school, but every vet school in the US (including Ross and SGU) require 8 hours of general chem and 8 hours of organic chem as a prereq. SOME schools, may only require 4 hours of each, but you'd have to look, but I know that's a general prereq just like biology, physics, etc

I also can't decide whether I want to be a small or large animal vet, I do competitive horseback and love horses, cows, bulls, any large farm animal as well as reptiles, bunnies, cats or dogs. Do you know how you chose your "type" of veterinarian-work?
@BrittneyKilgore3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes, volunteering helps applying to college and vet school. When applying for vet school, there is a section for hours of animal exprience and hours for vet experience which means directly under the supervision of a veterinarian. Both help! (are you a college sophmore or high school sophomore)? In regards to choosing what kind of vet, getting the most experience possible is my suggestion. You have so much time to figure it out. Many people change in vet school after getting experience or taking certain courses. You could also do mix practice which is a vet which kind of does a mix of small and large animal. Honestly, the choices are endless

Hey Brittney! Hope you are doing well; I just had 2 questions for you that I hope you can answer. How many letters of recommendation did you have? And also, how many hours of experience in total did you have when applying?
@BrittneyKilgore3 жыл бұрын
I did 3 LORs - 2 from a vet and 1 not from a vet. If it's the same as when I applied, you can submit up to 6 but VMCAS will only review 3. So for example, if they require 2 vet letters and you submit 4, they will randomly choose 2 so its best to submit 3 quality LORs from people you know you want them to read. Second, I had about 5,000+ hours of experience of small animal. SGU still required me to get 200 hours of large animal experience to keep my acceptance, so I would recommend trying to get a mixed experience if possible (large and small, food animal, lab, research) even if its just animal experience like volunteering on a farm or at zoo. But also don't get intimidated by that number. I know people who had only a few hundred hours too.

There is still a stigma around Caribbean schools. Caribbean schools are vastly easier to get into. Most are for profit. They’re more interested in making a profit than turning out good doctors. That’s why us med/vet schools are difficult to get into. They want to turn out good highly qualified doctors. I wish you the best of luck but just know it is significantly harder to be a doctor from a Caribbean school in the us.
@BrittneyKilgore3 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm 3/4 of the way through my veterinary training and have encountered no issues. There is still stigma, 100% but alot of it is slowly but surely changing. Plus, at SGU and Ross, they are AVMA accredited. You do your normal training and as long as you past the NAVLE, the same license exam anyone at a US vet school would take, you're a veterinary doctor just the same. No extra training or years of school. So as long as you're accepted and pass and get your license, I don't see how it's "significantly harder" to become a doctor.

@@BrittneyKilgore I guess I worded that last part not the best. What I mean is practicing vet med in the us is harder coming from a Caribbean school. By no means impossible. As stated I do wish you the best of luck. I hope you find a job that’s very fulfilling and makes you happy!

Aww that's amazing! Just keep the dream alive. I wanted to be a vet at that age too and I never let any hard classes or negative people affect me. Also, beagles are my favorites! I want one sooo bad!

How did you become a vet tech at 16??
@BrittneyKilgore4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the state legally what's the working age. In Ga, I could do it at 16 with my parent's consent. He was a family-friend vet so he'd known me since I was young

I wanna go into livestock/ large animal vet but I just feel like I won’t be smart enough 🥺
@BrittneyKilgore3 жыл бұрын
You will! Everyone starts off at different places, but finishes relatively the same. And, large animal/livestock vets are in SUCH demand everywhere. Don't give up! If you need any advice, feel free to message me on Instagram

@@sama4092 So like a private owned pet store with a veterinary clinic attached to it? I think its very doable! I'd recommend maybe getting a business degree or training to help assist

I never considered vet school, I was never the kid that dreamed of being a vet. I started off wanting to do animal rescue rehab. I learned that you need a biology degree to do so, so I changed my major to Biology and doubling in animal studies. Then I learned to work hands on with animals, you either have to be a zoo keeper or a vet. I then came to the realization that I really just wanted to take care of animals so I decided to go pre-vet. I have no experience. I’m getting experience tho, I’m volunteering at Clearwater marine aquarium in the sea turtle and aquatic biology department and trying to pick up a shift in the rehab/clinic to shadow a vet. I’m in my fourth year of college but I have two more years of undergrad because I changed my major so late and added a second major. I feel like I’m an idiot for considering vet school but I have never worked so hard for anything in my life. I just feel so drawn to it, I’m so determined. Idk

Keep going! It's never too late. There's no timeline for being a vet. I have classmates that are in their 30s and 40s! If that's your dream, do it

Is it more difficult for students majoring in a subject that is non-science like education to get into vet school?
@BrittneyKilgore3 жыл бұрын
Nope! As long as you get your pre-reqs and some experience, you're fine :)
