You know, you could've just used the 3800 Camaro bellhousing. It uses the ford t5 transmission bolt pattern, has a starter mount, and is like 25 bucks at the junkyard. Hell, could've just scored the whole transmission from a 97-02 v6 5 speed and had the proper input shaft. Just food for thought. Killer gt6. I'm doing essentially the same thing to a 1971 vega.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
@@damianlindsey6177 I don't recall seeing that option when I was researching, I knew of the 2.2l S10 bellhousing, but both of those have the starter bump on the driver's side, and due to clearance issues, we need the starter in a more typical location for the LS. Also, we needed either a V8 world class unit, or something of similar strength. The 2004 Mustang V6 unit is available in junk yards still around here and has the second highest torque number available, shy of the T5-Z! :) One of the next episodes (maybe ep20) will go over what we've done, we're pretty pleased! @@FanatikBuilds the t5 in the 97-02 camaro is a wc t5. It's basically a ford wc t5 with a 14spline input shaft. This gt6 you guys are building is absolutely amazing and really going to be watching how you solve the front accessory drive issue I ran into lol. The LS is a great engine, but you picked the wrong LS. There's 2 all-aluminum LS's found in trucks that displace 6.0 & 6.2, engines that I pay $1500 for that come with the computer and harness. I buy about 12 a year and rebuild for my friends. It's a hobby of mine. For $4k I can get decent LT's. We can get 650/600 hp/tq with the right combination of parts. It makes a great drifting motor. We have one in a BRZ that's a blast to drive. The LS4 is not a good choice for rwd or a manual trans. But I love everything else about your build. The chassis looks great, and your choice of suspension front and rear I think is brilliant. I subscribed. and will watch you complete this build. It's going to turn out well I'm sure.

The reason the internet is bored of LS swaps is because it’s not creative, and it’s all been done before. Even though you’ve ended up with an LS, this is still a creative solution. Besides, the internet doesn’t have to live with the headache that a Rover V8 would be. Even in the UK they’re known for being unreliable and, unlike Canada, we have easy access to spares.

I see hints of BOM in the presentation (especially the ending), and I like how it works. :-) Sad you're not able to use a Rover 3500 to keep the whole "Britishness" of it all, but more than understandable when considering budget and availability, so can't blame you there. The good thing with a modern motor is fuel injection and subsequent fuel economy. I too would have done something different with the motor compared to stock. That LS4 is an interesting choice.

People hate on LS motors, and (frankly) I expected you guys to put a 5.0L (302ci) Ford engine in it. But all the reasons you gave for choosing an LS are why they're so popular. Oil pans for just about every configuration (front sump, rear sump, dry sump...) are available. There's a user on LS1tech.com who is using an LS4 with a Pontiac G6 6 speed manual (transverse application) in his Fiero. He's also on Fiero.nl, his name is Fieroguru and he has done a lot of mods that might relate to what you have planned. He solved the starter integration issue on it, so might be helpful.

Thank you! You it the nail on the head - it's a common enough platform that parts are easy to find and many configurations are available... @@jayinmi3706 Thanks for sharing that link - he's doing a very nice job! I saw the moroso pan on LS4King's video and it's definitely a nice solution. Much though I love the sound of a well set up straight-six the GT6 engine was never well set-up, and was very heavy for its output. Even my neighbour's one with 3x Weber DCOE and a much altered exhaust sounded somewhat asthmatic, and it could barely keep up with my much modified Dolomite with its pair of 48mm DCOE (yes, they were rare and ouch expensive). But the thought of a GT6 with a nice V8 burble, now that's going to be a real eye and ear catcher. I'd not really noticed that engine until now, but it looks to be the ideal one for the job. Al the best for the build - I'll be following with interest.

@bunkie21004 жыл бұрын
Despite being somewhat of a purist, I have to say that the LS4 is a good choice. Pushrods keep it compact and aluminum keeps it light. I’m looking forward to seeing what you have in store for the differential. By way of contrast, I’m looking at various engines for the airplane kit I’m building. The Corvair I’m considering has an installed weight of about 225 lbs for up to 120hp (depending on displacement). Getting 300hp from a 310lb engine is a very good deal.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter! Yes it's funny how much of a difference pushrods make to the overall size. It's really the perfect shape for our engine bay! Although not common, I have seen a few planes running water-cooled engines, so could be interesting! I always thought a Subaru EJ257 in a Cessna 152 would be a riot :) ... altitude affects cars and planes alike, so why not a turbo'd one? :)
@bunkie21004 жыл бұрын
Fanatik Builds - With aircraft engines, simpler is, generally, better. Big cylinders with low RPM power curves and loose tolerances combined with air cooling is a recipe for reliable operation. The Continental 0-200 in the club Cessna 150s I fly fit this description. Redline is under 3000 RPM and you get 100hp at full power out of 200 cubic inches. Subaru engines have a very checkered history as aircraft engines. The head gaskets and ECUs have been responsible for numerous crashes. Auto ECUs are a very bad idea in airplanes. Many have a “limp home” mode (to use just one example) that can get you killed because it prioritzes saving the engine rather than the pilot. In any case, I’m really looking forward to seeing what you have in store. Keep up the good work!
@themoppie10004 жыл бұрын
It's going to be a very interesting build! I'm very curious about what you do with the rear end, as the whole set up was never designed to handle the 100hp from the straight 6, let along 300hp from a V8 :D I used to have a Triumph Herald based kit car, same chassis and rear end. The frame rails had been unstiched and turned over so they flared out instead of in. That made the whole frame more ridged and allowed room for a Toyota Celica gear box. But it had a fibreglass body on top, been a long time since I looked under a GT6 so no idea if the body would fit over a modified frame. However I was looking at custom building a rear end out of a Subaru rear diff (Fuji Heavy Industries unit, also found in lots of Nissan's) and suspension arms and uprights from an AWD Mazda 323 as it would all fit in the same space and could still use the transverse leaf spring. The only sad part will be losing the sound of that Triumph 6, it's not a big hp engine but has amazing torque and a really lovely smooth engine note.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Interesting that removing the box section and reversing the flares made it stronger - wouldn't have guessed that. Yes the R160-180 looks like a good swap, only the CVs that become a bit fun to figure out... but we've got a whole new solution which should solve all our problems! ;) Yes, we'll miss the sound of the six, but a friend who lives nearby has a GT6+ and a TR6 so we do still get to hear them occasionally! We've never had a V8 so we'll enjoy the sound of that too though 👍 Cheers!

The Rover V8 would be the obvious choice in the UK but the LS looks preferable. Just a thought on a V6... they are about and can be really tiny.. Toyota and so on. Great vids.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob - not a ton of longitudinal V6s around here that are within our price range. Transverse V6's can be difficult to work with as the intake and exhaust manifolds are often only suited to a FWD layout... from my research our best/cheapest bet would have been a 4.3 chevy V6 (perhaps a LV3) - but they're actually taller than our LS4 and not much shorter - and it would have been about the same amount of work for less power :) ... thanks for the support and hope you'll enjoy what's to come!

Also check out fieroguruperformance.com, he made a very cool adapter for the ls4 starter that might be an inspiration for the t5 red application

dang I was hoping for a 1UZ, this still going to be cool though.

I would have liked one too, but they're just too tall to make work sadly - it'll be more obvious in later episodes! Thanks for the support regardless though!

Sorry - lol! Had to take the time to explain some backstory before we crack on with more fabrication!

@@FanatikBuilds You don't need to justify anything! It's your car. Just wrench and we'll watch

Hi, great series of videos. I am following with interest and will be particularly interested to see how you squeeze a T5 between the frame rails and what plans you have for the diff. Your approach and problem solving are awesome. I have done a Gt6 Rover V8 build and the car continues to run great after seven years. Some build details are attached. There is a youtube link to the running car in the sidways -technologies link. sideways-technologies.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/7329-gt6-rover-v8/ Gunner1

It's actually because of your car that we wanted to swap a V8 into ours! Great work on it, you did a lovely job and we hope ours will turn out as nicely! The next episode should answer those questions - stay tuned! 👍

Ls much better option from someone who lives in the UK the rover v8 is dogshit expensive to get power out of it plagued with issues that they never got right

The first car I ever owned was a '67 GT6. You've spent a fair a mount of time redoing the shell. Could have done something interesting with a restomod. Please put it out of it's misery - roll it out of the shop and let the rust reclaim it.

do your own then. if i had the time and cash id stick a tesla drive train in one and a hyabusa in another

My suspicion is you're well under on the weight you have for the LS4....nearer 500lbs dressed. The Rover (Buick) has a lot less "meat" to it all over & you have that way over the weight of the LS which isn't correct.
@mchristr3 ай бұрын
Agreed. I found several websites that list the LS4 as 478 lbs. dressed. The Ford 302 listing with aluminum heads (460 lbs.) is also way off. The later 5.0 iron roller blocks are only 136 lbs according to my scale.

You went from restoration to modification? Ugh.... OK, your restoration will need structural modifications to the chassis, suspension(s), transmission, rear end .... Well wishes

dont care its a LS and now its still just a a boring swap
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
Lol, not just a swap... about the only part we're keeping is the bodyshell! :) More to come.

sorry mate but you are destroying a bit of motor heritage. you talk about e types and the history of the gt6 and why people love them just to pull the heart out of it.
@FanatikBuilds4 жыл бұрын
One *could* say the same thing about Project Binky or any other Restomod too - but you won't hear that from me. Plenty of "properly" restored GT6s out there, and we're just having fun making ours unique. Cheers.

@@FanatikBuilds I would say that. And there are not as many as you would think. Even more so I the uk. Cool have fun but as you just pointed out what your doi g is old hat, done to death and no offense, boarding. I'm in the middle of a mk 2 rebuild. Doing lots to up date the car and putting ideas that have been kicking around since the gt6 was first built, into action. A restoration with modifications to improve the car but keeping the fast disappearing heritage of triumph intact. There is a ton you can do to a gt6 and keep the engine and still get improved power and handling. As a triumph lover and KZbin viewer it's my opinion that you should do something unique, not just another engine swap. I will share my ideas with you in private in the hope you have a better KZbin channel, a more interesting build and a car that hasn't been butchered and had its appreciating valve erased.
