I choose to have apps minimize into the App icon instead - saves so much space... (perhaps you can explain to users how to do that in settings). Also, it would have been nice to cover the whole Maximize thing (green button) Windows users love so much. Full Screen and “Spaces” on Mac can be different - even though Windows 10 also seems to have multiple Desktops now.

Maybe. But I don't think you'd want to. Use the built-in keyboard and Trackpad. First, the Trackpad is way more powerful than any mouse. You want to utilize the gestures and accuracy of it. I'm in the opposite boat; life-long Mac user forced by company to switch to PC a year ago. If it weren't for a 3rd party app called SharpKeys to reassign key layout to be more macOS-like I would have gone insane, and with a bad case of carpal tunnel from the finger gymnastics required. Idea for a future topic: Since switching to Catalina (my home office Mac) a bunch of files were moved and stowed away in a Folder called Relocated Items... why has this happened and how can you put hem back where they were, if necessary. It's just odd and inconvenient to have to go to Users>Shared to locate my font stash and many other files.
@macmost5 жыл бұрын
This only happens during an upgrade to Catalina. The System folder is read-only in Catalina. These are things that apps and installers put in your old System folder. That isn't allowed anymore anyway, so these are taken out. The apps wouldn't be using them at this point, so in most cases no harm done. They are probably old. But for developers and the like, they are placed in that special folder instead of being deleted.

I purchased Norton 360 for my Desktop Gaming PC a few months ago and can be used for up to 5 devices. Is it worth downloading this onto my Mac too? I know there's opinions that Mac's very rarely get virus's due to the system set up of Apple & the apparent slow down Norton can make to my Mac. Hi Glenn Tonge, Would you mind providing a couple of examples of how you are more efficient in your work process since migrating to MacOS. I actually got an M1 MacBook Air for Christmas but recently returned it. I did struggle a bit with how MacOS treats windows but wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I’m thinking I’d get more use out of the M1 MacMini desktop at a cheaper price point. I really don’t need the portability because my old IPad Air 2 is my primary go to device when on the go. @@emayhand Gary at MacMost has pointed out things like cut and paste, I do a fair bit of document writing so this helped. The delete key ah yes the delete key, so on all MS keyboard-based PC/Laptops you have a backspace key and a delete key. Gary shows you that if you use the [fn] key and the [delete] key simultaneously, you will see you now can delete forward as you can on a PC. This for me was like nirvana lol. I adjusted great to it. On my iMac at home, this key combo selects the entire paragraph. Is there a way to highlight a sentence on the Mac? (Disclaimer: I don't use the Mac keyboard. Do you literally mean a sentence? Like from the previous period to the next period? Shift+Home on Windows should highlight everything from the cursor back to the start of the page. But maybe you are using a specific app? Which one? Or maybe you customized it somehow?

Shift + left and right highlights letters. Shift+option+left and right highlights words. Shift+up and down highlights lines. Shift+option+up and down highlights paragraphs. Shift+control changes this behavior also. Just option + arrows moves the cursor more quickly through text. Sadly there is no OS level way to highlight sentences. I think the per word highlight should be fast enough for most cases.

@@cpchick81 You should choose very carefully as it is very difficult to change your account name after you create an account. Easy to change your password as of course that is needed if your password is compromised.

In most apps when you choose the File menu and hold down the Option key, the Duplicate menu item changes to Save As.

@macmost5 жыл бұрын
You don't need a wildcard for things like that. Just .jpg will find filenames that contain .jpg.

I feel bad for new users as some apps are annoyingly inconsistent when it comes to the close button and actually have it quit out of the app completely. Incredibly annoying to me. Typically third party devs.

Why is Cut Paste Not As"CMD+X & Then CMD+V"
@macmost3 жыл бұрын
For text and pixels? It is. Or are you asking for files? For files, there is no "cut," only "copy." Then you can do paste or move. This way, there is no time where your important file is in limbo. If it were cut and paste, you could cut, get interrupted by something, then forget to paste. Then your important file would be gone.

Can u transfer windows file FAT32 on your external hard drive to your mac
@macmost2 жыл бұрын
A file isn't FAT32. A file is a file. It can be stored on a drive that is formatted FAT32. Or it can be on a drive formatted NTFS, ExFAT, HFS+ or APFS. These are other drive formats. But the same file can exist on any of those. If you have a drive that is formatted FAT32 you should be able to connect it to your Mac and then see the files on it. You can then transfer the file to your Mac's drive.

Create an Apple ID. You don't need payment to log in. But you can certainly fund the account using gift cards. See support.apple.com/en-us/HT202631

I have nothing against Apple. In fact I own an iPhone, two iPads and an Apple Watch. But I hate Apple desktop. I dread it when I have to use my wife’s Mac Mini. It routinely takes more steps, commands, etc. to accomplish the same simple task vs. Windows. And don’t get me started on the crippled Mac OS version of Office 365. Outlook for Mac especially sucks with its pathetic task management options. I’ve tried to fully join the Apple cult. I’ve really tried.

How do you “un-hide” a window?
@macmost3 жыл бұрын
You don't hide windows, you hide apps. Just switch to the app with the App Switcher or do the same action you would use to launch it, like click on it in the Dock, etc.

I’ve had a MacBook for about a year and I’m still learning how to use it. Among the apps that puzzle me is Safari. It appears that I have to have several versions of it running at the same time all with different tags open. If I try to close one, they all close and I have to start again. What I would like is having just one example of Safari so I know what’s open and I have control over it. Another confusing aspect is when a new app is opened and the screen shows a previously open app, the name of that still appears at the top left. This happened several times in this video. When it happens to me, I’m left wondering have I done it right? Another problem is with Finder. I am used to having several examples of File Explorer open and flipping from one to another. This I find difficult with Finder. I would be very glad if someone could put me right on these things.
@macmost5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you are doing to have multiple Safari apps running. Do you mean multiple Safari windows? That's normal. But you can close any tab without closing the others. Not sure what you mean by "shows a previously open app." What time code in the video do you see this? You can open as many Finder windows as you want.
@thomaskember46285 жыл бұрын
Sorry I got the terminology wrong. I do mean multiple Safari windows (I didn’t know one talks about windows on the MacBook). On these Safari windows there be a tag on one which runs the same app (say an email app) as on another. This means double ram space is being used for an app. More importantly, it can be confusing trying to find out where you are with this app. Another problem, if you are looking at a file, say a large text file, and you want to add to it at the end. In Windows you press Control and End. And if you want to go back to the top, Control and Top. On the MacBook I can’t see how you do it without using two fingers to go down and go up again.

I am still having trouble with Safari. When I log in, there are 4 Safari running. If I try deleting one of them, they are all deleted. I then go to the dock and start Safari up again and not just one but 4 come up again. I would like to have only one Safari in which I could easily see what tags are running.
@macmost5 жыл бұрын
You say "there a 4 Safari running" -- 4 what? Windows? Tabs? If Windows, then clicking the red button at the top will close one window. If tabs, then clicking the X in the tab will close that one tab.
@thomaskember46285 жыл бұрын
@@macmost I'm sorry, I mean windows. I have no problem with tags; CMD+W works fine. I understood that the clicking the red button didn't really close a window, it only put it in some sort of dormant state. That's why I tried CMD+Q which closed everything.

So everything is like windows but instead of clicking you click twice, gesture on the track pad, while holding option and command while standing on your head and dragging and dropping the app while unplugging and replugging the proprietary cable? Simple! Got it! Awesome, I was hoping to need both hands and have to remember secret keystrokes to do anything. Starting to regret buying a Mac.
