@@JoDidntHearYou I mean it's not entirely untrue that some people with major disabilities don't act like a "normal person" It's rough because first you have to define what a "normal person" is, but a start would be saying the person doesn't let their disability take over/control their life/define them. Do people actually say the first one? Like they really associate deafness with being ugly? The only time I've asked people if they are deaf (using voice and ASL at the same time) is to confirm it because they could be mute or have some language processing disorder that makes it difficult for them to communicate. That and I ask if they prefer signing because I know some individuals might not or don't know the langauge. I'm trying to pick up ASL and it's really fun, I really love studying languages and sign is a new type of language for me, since I've only learned about spoken languages before. It's also a lot easier for me to pick up. I was always good with choreography in plays because the muscle memory of "when this situation happens, you do this" practiced over and over would make it almost instinctive. It's obviously not the same but my point is that muscle memory kind of brings me some peace of mind to practice it and just get comfortable with it. I also like the fact that you can't really be half paying attention to a conversation, you have to focus or you'll miss something. I think people would say less stupid stuff if every language was like that.

You are exceptionally intelligent with the gift of signing. I understand it to be a language in itself. Do I see it correctly that sounds are more of a distraction to you? Did the cochlear give you any level of hearing, or did you give up on it preferring what you know best? The signing seems to me so fast, I can't follow it. You are bright, exuberant, and beautiful. This video is a bit old but I just ran into it. I've been severely hearing impaired for thirty years now. I have gone thru many sets of hearing aids. I have never learned sigh language. Sometimes friends and relatives are patient. But even my wife of 15 years is not. She has a real attitude, and I always have thought she would finally understand just how disabling hearing loss can be and how hard hearing impaired people work to understand and to not be a burden on others. To frequently, when I ask someone to repeat or I say I didnt quite get that, The response is negative. What I get back is , "don't worry about it". Or, "we'll take care of it". I've even gotten, " Look, if you just don't understand the issue, we'll get someone who does". As if to imply they think you are stupid. This article is called, "Things NOT to say to deaf people". Well, its not just what people say, it's how they act. They can't SEE this disability, so they don't understand it or have any patience or desire to work with it. If you have two broken legs, people can SEE, and understand, that you can't walk. Too frequently, people with hearing disabilities are treated as if they simply are not as smart as other people. Being able to understand speech and to be able to understand subject matter are not the same thing. But I've been hearing impaired so long now that I can usually cope and even laugh about it. My doc says it's to the point that even with the latest hearing aids, I will still miss about 45% of words, so implant time is coming. None of my friends sign. Non of my relatives do. Ridiculous since my mom, my sister, and one of her daughters have or have had severe hearing loss. Mom and sister are dead now. Anyway, this video just hit a nerve. Sorry so verbose. But I must say, that girl is fantastic. What an attitude and personality. Incredible.

I am taking ASL I at San Antonio College and my professor is Deaf. I get tutoring from a Deaf person as well and we are only allowed to sign in the classroom. This is the first class that I am actually excited about because I am taking it as Foreign Language for Speech-Language Pathology or Speech Therapy.

Been deaf since birth and been though that. Now 53 years old and my first time started to have cochlear was 1997 of summer. I love to hear. But now not sure if I made a mistake or not. Because right now I been getting lots of migraine and always loose my balance. Around April 23rd I fell down on the high steps without the rail, and broke my left leg in two places. Now wearing a rod in my leg. So I am seeing neurologist to see if they can help solves the problem. Most people think my cochlear is ears pods too. LOL.

You right I'm 53 years I have dealt with people like that 🙄. It never gets old. Now when I meet people they wanted to learn sign language but I don't have the space to teach them plus it drives me crazy when they want to only learn cuss words in sign language which I don't agree with that I told them I will teach you basic. They changed mind 🙄

The worst part is that I could see myself saying some of these things if I got in the situation of unexpectedly meeting a deaf person and wanting to converse with them. "Can you read my lips" for example. I never was in a similar situation before and would be worried since I haven't got the clearest of articulations

This taught me a lot thank you very much I loved it and I will make sure to tell my friends not to say this stuff to anyone who is deaf I don’t want them to get mad at my friends and I don’t my friends to make a mistake

So, I hope this doesn't seem intrusive or a bad place to ask but: I've heard of deaf people who enjoy music and I've always been curious what experiencing music when you're deaf is like. What sorts of music do you like and what about it do you like? Obviously these things can vary between different people, but since you explicitly said you like music, it seemed like a good place to ask.
