Whether it's asking them to lip read what someone's saying across a room or only showing an interest in how to sign swear words, here are some of the things not to say to a deaf person.

I keep the subtitles on and I'm not hard of hearing, but modern TV is notorious for having really quiet dialogue and huge explosions within seconds of each other which is jarring for any ear. Accents are also difficult for me, especially if someone is speaking quickly.

@I'm just saying it's okay man. English isn't my first language either. By 'senses heightened' they meant that since they have hearing disability, people think that they can see or smell better. And GAYDAR means gay-radar. It's like being able to tell if someone is attracted to their same sex. Jessica is gay (or bi/pan I dunno, she's married to a woman though) So she's saying that she has an excellent gaydar.

I'm learning ASL because there are a lot of deaf kids at my school. I don't like the fact that I can't easily talk to them because of something neither of us can control, so I thought I'd put some effort in to get to know them. ASL is actually super fun and my friends are helping learn a ton of words that I don't understand.

By German you mean like German Sign Language? I'd like to learn some of it but sign languages look so difficult because they're 3D and I'm used to kind of 1D languages/versions of languages. Spoken language is just a string of sounds following one another, written language is about letters or in line. But sign languages are just happening everywhere and they involve hands and mimics and body language. I'd love to learn some of the Deutsche Gebärdensprache though, I'm planning to go to a course in a couple of months. I'd love to be able to talk to a deaf or hard of hearing person, overstep this communication barrier without any 3rd person translator help. So far I can only read signed letters (I'm not that good in signing them yet), tell my/hia/her name and ask about yours. I wish I could learn more.

I'd love the chance to take a sign language class again. It was one of the most important languages to me because I grew up meeting a lot of deaf children and wanted so badly to be able to talk to them. I was able to take it for 2 years when I first entered high school, but wasn't able to keep learning in that environment when I moved.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
When I was in primary school there were 2 children (brother and sister, the sister being the oldest) who both could hear, but needed hearing-aides to be able to understand what people said. (this part is for everyone under 30, you have no idea how technology has advanced) His devices incorporated possibilities for the now so common loop facilities but on a very small scale. In the daily 'circle-talk' in class (maybe that's something Dutch, I don't know), the person speaking had to be wearing a heavy box with lavalier mic, which would radio the sound to him, while he was wearing a similar box but then without the mic but the cord that held the box around your neck facilitating a loop so his aides could pick up the radio and he could hear what the person speaking was saying. It was only a few years ago I realised deaf people probably don't take much joy in most videos as there are no subtitles and explanations of things going on in the video. Since then I just provide subtitles in two languages (Dutch, my native language, and English) The same I'm still looking for a way to provide audio-transcription...

They have great documentaries, tv shows etc that will help with the transition... and they're well produced and great fun to watch! Also, maybe look up your local Deaf club so you can go and meet new people. It was a bit daunting for me the first time, but you'll find some lovely people and make friends who can understand the experiences and concerns you are facing. Good luck in the future x

@@iluvzurara2 Oh no, it happens in the Netherlands as well, trust me. I have been to friends were I would watch some movie and quickly someone would start complaining about the subtitles... But especially when characters in a movie or serie mention a brand, store or locally known commercial-slogan or whatever, you can get lost easily. I got the dvd-boxset of Friends. Well, for me, as a Dutch guy, there are so many references to local commercials, brands, stores and what not that it's hard to follow along, thus subtitles are always on. I don't care what other people think.

One thing that always amazes me with deaf people is when they can articulate really good. It takes real dedication and hard practice to articulate without hearing the sounds coming out of your mouth. It's different for people who became deaf later in life (I think) but for people who were born deaf and are able to talk are the people I look up to. Always challenging themselves and succeeding in what they do, I could never...

Well, sometimes it is hard for some people to be deaf. I like my life as is but yes, it’s harder to be deaf in one ear. Sometimes I’m a bit just like “Why did I have to be deaf in only one ear? Can’t I just be either deaf in both ears or not deaf at all?!” But I live my life as is, being partially deaf. Some people think I’m lying as I go to a hearing school and don’t use hearing aids tho, it’s hard only depending on my left ear.

I am partially deaf and cannot stand the 'You should have listened then' or the 'listen more'. It's so frustrating! Also when someone says something and you ask them to repeat it and they say 'it wasn't important'. Then I never find out what they wanted to say and the CURIOSITY EATS ME ALIVE.

Oh my god! All this time, it's just been a phase?! Thank you, For Hinguerez, for enlightening me! I wish you'd told me sooner though. It would have saved all the trouble of going to constant audiology appointments since the age of 3 and having doctors shove weird telescopes down my ear. If I'd known my half-deafness was only temporary then maybe I could have skipped that operation I had 4 years ago when they drugged me and put grommets in my ear. Oh if only I'd known! Smh.

Not only that, but the audio levels kept changing, that's infuriating for deaf people too. I'm hard of hearing and have Hyperacusis. I had to keep adjusting the volume level because I wanted to hear the people when they did speak but I had to turn the volume down when it cut to a title card because the music got way louder and it hurt my ears.

Kate E oh my god people actually do go up to blind and visually impaired people and do that shit though. It happens to me all the time. I'm Deaf and blind in my right eye and I get people asking me all the time if I can hear them, or they'll stand on my right side and ask me how many fingers they're holding up. People will take my friend's glasses (she's not blind but legally blind and has very low visual capability and needs her glasses to perform the most basic tasks) and ask her how many fingers they're holding up, or tell her she has to catch them if she wants her glasses back. People are so disrespectful to D/deaf and blind people and it's just being ingrained in them more and more as the years go by.

I am Deaf and have been waiting for this video for ages and I absolutely loved it! However, it's very sad to see the mockery being taken out of the answers that these people made. Yes, the title should have been altered slightly as it is just room for people to make fun of it, but what people in the comments don't understand is that every Deaf/deaf/HOH person is different. Some of us want a cochlear implant and some of us feel it changes our identity, some of us are happy being Deaf (even if this is hard for hearing people to understand) and some of us are not. The point of this video was to educate on the differences of people with hearing loss so that these silly, uneducated comments were not made. Unfortunate that even after we voice/sign what we want the rest of the world to know we are still not taken notice of!
