the phase thing... i hate it too cuz depression isnt a phase as it cant be cured.. u can only find ways to deal with it. people who have battled depression and come out stronger or better, didnt necessarily get rid of it they just found ways to deal with it or control it somehow. but the illness itself is always there and the symptoms and negative thoughts ALWAYS come back.

Once I said to my psychologist that I shouldn't complain because other people have it worse and he had a really good metaphor: if you are missing one leg, then sure, there are still other people missing both legs but that doesn't mean it shouldn't bother you that you're missing one leg. Because that's already bad enough.
@areswalker56476 жыл бұрын
Rose the Forest Elf i'm happy it helped you but it doesn't make much sense to me..if a person lost their leg they would have a reason to be bothered but what if i don't have any reason to be feeling like that (i have a loving family,good friends,a big house,i'm a college student that has never being a crime victim in any shape) the only things i'm losing i'm doing so due to my depression not the other way around so really i don't know. anyway i hope i'm just dense because it's good if it helped you and in no way i want to bring shit on it.
@jackriver83856 жыл бұрын
@@areswalker5647 the point is that your problems matter. They are obviously a big deal to you and they're keeping you from going on with your life. It's not bad to realise you've got problems and to seek help. I had many of the same thoughts when I went through a depression, and it is a big deal. I'm really glad I'm not depressed anymore and I try very hard not to slip back. Others may have it worse but that doesn't matter. There will always be someone who has it worse and there will always be someone who has it better. None of that matters because it's all relative. To you this is a big deal so that's what matters in your life. And people who love you will probably want to help you if you ask them.
@adrianvaznaugh-sanchez25476 жыл бұрын
Ares Walker that's how depression works. Like you said, you're not depressed because bad things are happening to you (depression is sometimes a result of negative life experiences like for me, but based on what you said i'm assuming you don't have a ton of bad stuff going on). Depression is caused by a lack of serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters in the brain, and that is represented by losing a leg in the above analogy.
@areswalker56476 жыл бұрын
Rose the Forest Elf i liked your comment so much i made a screenshot of it to help make me feel better when i'm feeling shit, thank you. you know, i haven't told anybody how i feel because i know they will ask me why and i won't know how to answer them, don't want them to treat me differently or i don't even know if i'm really depressed or if i'm just overthinking about this and i'm ok..i'm just stuck

Hooooooo yeah the sleeping one. Not sleeping enough cos you wanna punish yourself for having fun by getting more done n' shit. Self-harm isn't a list of things people do it's a mentality. Self-excoriation to either punish oneself or try to cancel out/compensate for emotional pain/emptiness. I think a lot of people forget that a bit facet of depression isn't just pain and sadness it's emptiness. The sadness is what happens when you take all the happiness away AND you're sad. Most of the time though you're just empty, or angry.

Thank you for wanting to help. Everybody is different, with depressed people too. The best thing you can do is to ask the person themselves. But not in big open-ended questions like "what do you want me to do?" That is too much pressure on the depressed person. Try to think of things that might help them, and give them an easy choice. Ask stuff like: "are you feeling like a snack right now or just a cup of tea?", "would you like for me to come over or not?", or "would it be helpful if I did chore x or y for you?". Make sure the topic of conversation is not always about their depression, tell them stuff about your day too. Try to treat them like normal, but be understanding and respectful when they don't react normally. Depression is a tough illness that takes a lot from the person with the disease, but they don't only want to be seen as the depressed one.
@bleumoonscott21495 жыл бұрын
If they are your friend, you should understand how they tick and know how to approach them. This means you have been learning about them and their movements over time. How they respond and react to different events in their life will help you understand how to approach them with mild or serious situations.
@d0r4t1n5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's just enough to sit and listen and not say anything, if somebody with depression has a rough moment, day, week or month (how long it lasts is always different, at least from my point of experience). For me personally it always was allot of help to just write a table with the things that were good and bad the day or month. Not really a typical diary but more a notebook with random sadness, anger and sometimes self pity whenever I feel really down. Maybe that is something that can help your friends. You can't do much more. People with depression have to learn for themselves what the signs for a bad moment are and how to get out of it. This comes through experience and practise. It's nothing you can take from their shoulders. Oh and one more. It helps A LOT to know that a friend does want to learn about depression and doesn't think their friend is weird because of it. Sorry for bad spelling. I'm no native speaker. ^^°

To the "other people have it worse" comment... someone drowning in a 5 meter deep lake is just as dead as someone drowning in a 20 meter deep lake, doesn't mean you shouldn't help either one. Edit: It might be a bad comparison, but what I'm trying to say is, that because someone is depressed and someone else might have something, people would classify as "worse" it doesn't mean, that the depressed person shouldn't get help (if they want help) or similar.
@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx11276 жыл бұрын
no that comment means that many people are living in poverty with no food , dead parents and their life being at risk at any time of the day. compare that to you being depressed because no one likes you at school is pathetic. There are people fighting for their and their childs lives everyday in syria and other war broke countries, you being 'sad' because you 'think' that your life means nothing is such a selfish thing to do. Get out of your hole and conquer your fear, i know its not easy but you just have to master the art of not giving a fuck; no one will help you. They may say they'll get you through it but at the end of the day its all up to you.
@DrBitchcraft.6 жыл бұрын
Just.. no. Did anyone in the video look like "no one likes them at school"? I'm sorry but you really need to stop comparing. I exercise everyday (walking my dog), I TRY to do yoga everyday (sometimes I don't do it for weeks), I've lost weight, I don't hurt myself (damn scars don't go away though), I watch videos about inspirational people, I'm on medical leave from school and trying to go back (couldn't keep up), I left a 7 year relationship, my skin is clearer, I get up in the morning (sometimes I sleep til noon), I stopped doing drugs and alcohol (except my many meds), I'm REALLY TRYING. I'm an adult who can't pay my own bills. I have up to this point managed a rollercoaster of 2 years on top of things, and then I fall apart from the stress of trying. So.. Next time you find out someone is depressed, don't assume they haven't tried literally everything already.

Man this video and these comments are such a relief to read. I'm doing yoga teacher training myself and have struggled with depression for 20 years. There are days that are much much better now than ever before - and yes, the yoga I do works - it is Kundalini yoga, which works a lot faster and more intensely than other forms - but there are still days like today, and yesterday, where I have depression. I'm so incredibly tired of people recommending me their little tips 'n' tricks. Fortunately, my insomnia and anxiety are massively less than ever before in my life but I have done EVERYTHING to get to this point (without antidepressants, yep, they were terrible for me), and have had a LOT of financial privilege for getting holistic/alternative care that the vast majority of people simply don't have access to. I'm extremely fortunate in that regard and I really feel for those who can't afford to get help. The way depression is dealt with must change and help needs to be more available. Dealing with and healing depression has been my life's story. It's not just some side problem, it has literally influenced everything and there is no simple solution to it. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. People who haven't been depressed can't really understand. I hope that as I heal I don't lose my understanding.

"It's all in your head." Shocking! Who would have thought that an organ in the body could get ill!? Are you going to tell me next that the asthma is 'all in your lungs'? Organs can get ill and damaged from multiple sources. The brain is not beyond becoming ill or damaged. Unfortunately, the brain is much more complicated than other organs and that makes it hard to treat some of these illnesses, if not almost impossible. One of the best things a psychologist ever told me when it came to my PTSD is: "I'm not going to tell you we can fix it or that there is a cure. Our job is to find a way to stabilize your foundation enough that we can find a way for you to learn how to cope and manage with the symptoms on your worst days." My PTSD comes with many things, including making my depression ten times worse. When my foundation is set and I feel grounded, having a focus and a goal that I am achieving, I am able to cope so much better. The moment that foundation begins to crumble, I struggle to cope and have to find something new that can ground me, even if temporarily while I fix the foundation that crumbled before it.
