People with Tourette's syndrome face a lot of assumptions about what it's like to live with their condition. For instance, there's a common belief that everyone with Tourette's swears, but this isn't the case.
Here, a group of men and women chat about the questions and observations they encounter about their Tourette's - and are happy to clear up any misconceptions about it that might be out there.

For my tattoos, I just told my artist beforehand "I have tourettes, I will let you know if I need you to pause." It wound up being okay because during the tattooing, my focus was on the tattoo and the pain, so I wasn't ticking too much, and when I did I was able to let them out when he had to get more ink or change colors. It worked out pretty well.

The first thing I thought of when reading this comment was their song “Tourette’s” Although I don’t know how true it is or what evidence there is to back it up, there are some people who speculate that Kurt himself may have been suffering from the disorder. Obviously a more minor case if it were true, but it’s an interesting thought.

I watched this a few years ago thinking “Oh wow, having Tourette’s must suck.” Two weeks ago I started having motor tics and now I’m rewatching it with a new appreciation. Also, I just want to say. Not all tics are visible. Some are small twitches or clenching certain muscles. Just because someone’s tics don’t involve them moving a lot, doesn’t mean they’re faking. Just thought that should be said.

The best way to describe what a tic feels like to a person without one is by asking them to try not to blink. The pressure build up is the same sensation i get if i try to hold it in.

My dad told me about his friend in high school with Tourette’s. His tick was craning his head to the side and making a little “ehhh” sound. It wasn’t always super bad, but it got worse when he was nervous. My dad said his biggest mistake was going ding dong ditching with him. They hid in the bushes, and the whole while making noises and revealing their location. But the guy is now a teacher, cool enough

I knew a girl with tics she was in therapy because she refused to accept her own tics. She had more motion driven ones and swear words. Some of her included randomly swimming her arms out , head banging, sometimes for actions when she was stressed about something her legs would also kick out. She ended up there because she was a perfectionist meaning her not having ability to control her tics upset her greatly because no matter what she had to tic. So for someone like her she ended hurting herself by suppressing them to much and to often. I hope wherever she is that she accepts herself like we accepted her. She was so good at drawing portraits of people she made a snack time killing for portraits.

How did I just find this! They are awesome. Those two girls really explain the Tourette’s that a lot of people don’t see! I have CPTSD with associated OCD and Tourette’s and I also have physical disabilities and it can make people just assume you’re possessed or crazy rather than your brain is just different - some are born with Tourette’s some develop it, and it makes it hard to go outside. It’s embarrassing sometimes and makes it hard to go shopping or anything.

The audacity of telling someone to “just relax” when they are ticking. I had to check a teacher at my job for saying that and telling the 7 year old to stop the tick as if it’s in their control 🙄. I really don’t understand how some people are so insensitive .... She generally ticked when she felt anxious, stressed, and bored. For this child, I noticed that they ticked less when they were doing activities that they really enjoyed. Everyone is different but i did what worked for her.

I wish they'd asked about stress and contentment - when I'm stressed my tics are way heavier and when I'm content I'm much more still. For me personally there is a direct correlation between ticcing and stress. There's a difference between relaxing and contentment! I've never and don't believe I'll ever not have my Tourette's, but like anything when you add stress or mental health problems into the mix the symptoms can be more severe. Would be nice to see someone talk about this, cause if I experience it, I can't be the only one.

i currently only have a tic disorder because i haven't had my tics for over a year (you need tics for over a year to be diagnosed with Tourette's among other things) and its been a very different life than i had before. My tics have come out pretty late because they usually start around 5-9 or in your teens but everyone is different. My first diagnosis was SS which is serotonin syndrome (i was taking anti depressants) but that wasn't it. My family has been very supportive and and made it better. I do have a hard time with my job because my anxiety makes me tic bad and its awkward when you're around a bunch of professional people. But so far I'm okay. Were not sure if they'll go away or stick with me but watching Tourette videos makes me feel better about my tics.
